homemade gasser w/pics
Hi all! I am posting here looking for advice on a rudder setup for my gas boat build. by the way, everything but the electronics are from scrach. Here's some pics, the first one shows the electronics, traxxas tx and rx, and futaba servo's. sorry the pics are extra junky. I can't figure out how I want to design the rudder setup using the other servo. Any suggestions are apreciated, on the rudder or anything else. Please go easy on me, this is my first build!
thanks[8D]
edit: I have no clue why it says 4/3/06, I took the pics today

RE: homemade gasser w/pics
yeeharacing, thats what it's made for. Just kidding. This is a low budget boat, and by the way the motor kicks great rpm's. The shaft is formed from the weed wacker shaft, and the prop is a bent edger blade. Give me some credit here, please. Concerning plowing water, the way that the prop is angled, it might lift the front up. If it doesn't, then I will make a bow for it. So, does anyone have any suggestions for how to make a functioning rudder and how to hook it up? All help is appreciated.

PRICELESS!!! Your not actually"Don", from Arvada,Co. are you? Yano, with a 6 or 7 channel radio, you could mount some articulating arms with robot servos, and dip the laundry as you motor around![X(][X(] Brian

Jokes, jokes, jokes. yes, their funny, but their not what I started this thread for. I also please ask, dont stop talking, lol. Does anyone have any suggestions about a rudder? Even "no" is helpful, well, not really, but if its true, say so please! I'm looking for suggestions.
thanks
edit: sorry, I didn't see crazyotto's post before I posted this. Thank you for the suggestion. All other suggestions are appreciated too like dimensions of rudder, and what to do with a standard servo, since it's all I've got, and how to connect the two in a sturdy waterproof manner. Thank you all.

Your probably going to need two LARGE rudders on the extreme left and right sides to turn this thing.
They would have to be strong yet thin and light.
Not poking fun but you should roll with the whole laundry thing and make a hatch with some jeans and shirts attached so they blow in the wind as you drive around the lake.

thanks, Ultimate48.
BMAD01, thats awesome! Maby I'll shoot for that, lol.
fun fact: on every tide bottle, it reads:
"Keep out of reach of children. Product is an irritant, avoid contact with the eyes and wear protective gloves (rubber, neoprene) for prolonged direct contact. May be harmful if swallowed. Store in a dry location to avoid dispensing problems".
and no, I didn't write that all out, it was copy and paste.

yo ho, im getting mad with those servos in the bags so i took 1 out for now and im going to have to find a way to make the throttle without using the cable cause the cable ends wont fit on the servo. i guess im going to have to make it work with fishing line again :\
edit: thats a nice rudder but my mom wont let me order anything unless its when i order a clutch and chain for the go-kart\minibike i may get back from some1 who stole it from me

smokin the gonja ........dude do you really think this thing is going to work if you are going for the tupperwear theme at least go with a low profile one so it doesnt get top heavy and tip over , because i bet my boat on it that it will flip over soon as it hits the water ....[sm=drowning.gif]

RE: homemade gasser w/pics
well then u just lost ur boat because we already made a WAY more ghetto boat just like it with the same thing and it was really stable and i could stand on it without it sinking ( this boat was the most ghetto thing ever made and i think that 5lb koolaidman may still have some pics we took of it or maby even a video.) but this newer, improved boat is better made and i think it will be really awesome when its done. right now im just installing the throttle and may start on the rudder cause i have a good way to make it work. but still need some suggestions on the actual rudder of what to use.

Will it work if you drill out the holes on the top servo peace? Heck, if it worksbut you change the plans, theres many more tabs still unmessed with.
Fishing line? ahh, great. that strechy stuff again. [:'(]
one more thing, that medal wire near the cormer of the work bench (nere were the chairs are normally stored) the short peices of medal wire looked perfect for the job, if you know were it came from and if you have more.

Looks like your off to a good start. I would strongly recommend considering a smaller prop. For any kind of weed wacker motor I would consider one that is 2-3" in diameter. It will allow the motor to achieve better rpm and will be less likely to want to roll the boat.
As for a rudder. Consider making something using a hinge. You could probably do it with a strip of plywood (painted to protect it against water penitration). It does not need to be very deep or wide. Take a look at some of the other boats on this site for ideas on rudder design, placement, and setup. You may need additional power to swing the rudder as standard servos are low on torque.
Let us know how we may help and keep the pics coming.

koolaid, im going to need another of those anyway for the rudder thats at least double sided and i dont want to waist any more of those. that fishing line worked great cause it doesnt strech if its short and that wire isnt the best to use but i may get it to work with the rudder. im going to try that other cable if i can find it but if not im going to have to zip-tie the servo right on the carb( i know u wont like it but unless i get a cable to work but i think its too big for those holes and it will break if i try to drill it out, thats all i really can do)
well back to the garage for a while

you should just put it in the watter with out the rutter an see if it will even move with that lown mower blad you have for a prop.
