Prestwich Sigma
Well after the various mail services attempted not to deliver it, I finally picked it up today
This is the FSRO version, low cut and mean... I pictured it next to my Lynx as it gives a good idea of the size difference and other changes made.
The build will proceed slowly probably, I still have to order some stuff and a few details are not yet decided......one example is that I do not appear to have space for a 1/4 scale steer servo so I have to research and find a high torque servo to my liking.
Epoxy and carbon build. Rails are nice and sharp as is the transom.
Thanks Dave, let's hope I can do it justice

RE: Prestwich Sigma
For your steering servo you can't go past the Hi-Tech HS 5945 MG digital servo. That will have more than enough grunt. I use one in my Insane Sports Hydro which also have small radio boxes.
Looks great keep the pics coming as you complete your build.

RE: Prestwich Sigma
Well, finally got a few of the bits I needed so thought I would do a quick update as I start the mockup for the build.
Pre-drilled stringers make fitting the Top Secret motor mount a breeze. With the motor where Dave designed it to be you can see how much space there is. The engine sits so low that the bottom mounting stud for the grey coil has to be removed.
Despite assurances that it is not required, I am putting a backing plate on the transom.
I suspect with the cavernous area in front of the motor there will be a lot of resonance so after initial testing I may need to put a bulkhead in position to reduce the noise level.

RE: Prestwich Sigma
Next installment.
Finally got the next load of gear, this build seems to be dogged with delays... Hull disappeared for a couple of days when shipped, had to go to the depot to pick it up, motormount and T-bar from Bluefishy did the same and I again had to go to the depot today to pick up the MTC delivery from Tom Lorenz after it went missing last Friday...
So it's starting to go together....
Marked and drilled for the stinger and rudder. As the backing plate must NOT be below the transom I taped up 2 pieces of aluminium to prevent that while marking. The stinger is a bit of a risk as Dave Marles has not had good results compared to a strut in his tests. Well, if it doesn't work for me someone else might like to try it
I don't like stuff banging around in the hull so a filter holder has been prepared. More to come with a mount for the tacho and GPS. It won't be full of "bling" just practical..
Got myself some ABC props as well, never tried these before so it will be interesting. Blade shape reminds me of Propshop, which I have used before. They now don't seem to answer e-mail enquiries and one hears of only problems with getting props from them [sm=punching.gif] so it's time to try something else.

Getting there.
Hope that the history of the parts going missing on you does not continue when it's all together - looks a lot of work to loose.

RE: Prestwich Sigma
Well I got around to mounting the drive and stuffing tube. The system comes from MTC and is a sealed system. I still need to make the oil reservoir. To supplement the rudder water inlet I have added a water inlet under the hull, it has yet to be filed flush to the bottom. As made here it shouldn't add drag whilst giving a good flow of water.

RE: Prestwich Sigma
I'm guessing that the spigot on the front of the coupling goes inside a ballrace thats in the housing . The silicone tube then joins the housing to the top of the tube. Is that it ?
How long do they reckon it will run without maintenance. ie without taking out the flexishaft ?
I haven't got anything against stinger drives other than on my own boat I like the shaft as low as possible for best stability and when I swapped between stinger drive and strut I lost a lot of speed with the stinger. I'm sure with a different setup then the stinger is OK. It certainly has advantages in ease of adjustment although your MTC stinger does seem to make a low shaft position impossible. Maybe the higher shaft position will allow a biogger prop and give more speed. Only time will tell :-)

Spot on Dave, a touch of loctite to seal the bearing to the spigot and it's done. Time wise I'm not sure, as I run in brackish water it will be coming out after a days running anyway. I'll let you know what I think of it once it is up and running....
As for the stinger, like I said, if I can't get it to work then off it comes

If you cant leave the flex shaft in place Ian whats the idea behind the silicone seal is it just there for keeping the lubrication in?.As regards your drive been higher up from the v i was going to say try a bigger prop than usual but dave beat me to it ,not often i get to offer good advice to someone as experienced as you guys (thank a lot Dave ) lol.Cant wait to see it completed have you decided on a paint job yet? will it be yellow .

RE: Prestwich Sigma
It allows thinner lubricants and keeps it all oiled up whilst helping keep the inside of the boat cleaner. Nothing replaces good maintenance routines.......
I suspect the boat will end up yellow and white in some form and with a name along the lines of Sassa V. I am not yet sure if it will be painted however!!

RE: Prestwich Sigma
Little more progress, Ok, here we go...Intake filed down flush.
Mounted 2 pieces of carbon angle, 1 for tacho and 1 for GPS I think (may change).
Radio box glued down to a base plate and in position, still have to make front hold downs (any good ideas?) Kindly note the BIG hole rearward to the rudder [:@]
Preparing the clunk for the tank and the tank finished, this is a 1 litre tank (fun days - out and run), it may move the cg too high when full so I am also making a smaller one for testing purposes. I still have to install the filler. I use the Dubro, some people complain of air leaks but I have yet to have that problem.
Next we have some glassed in brass for cooling water, 1 each side, 1 from the rudder (cooling head, flange and front of pipe) and 1 from the flush intake (manifold/pipe union O'rngs)
Finally a self bailer as otherwise there is no way out for any collected water with this stinger drive.
Getting there but it is taking longer than I anticipated.

Ian, quick word of advice, I have always found weakest point is o rings on manifold, I have been using a whh one this season with no troubles at all, mainly because it only has two mounting holes on the flange meaning easy tightening in position without disturbing the angle after tightening. Just a thought (we have to do 30 minute races normally)

RE: Prestwich Sigma
Oooh I've neglected this, lots of progress and should hopefully be on the water this weekend.
Radiobox is finished, tank mounts in place and a Kwikfill in position.
Starting to look like a boat with just a pipe support and the oiler to finish.

Nice boats you've got there Gary, thanks for the pics
Bentley, they are waterproof enclosures, IP56. Check out the [link=http://www.fibox.com/default.asp?path=440]Fibox[/link] site. They really make waterproof radioboxes easy. These or similar must be available over there. Always check the CAD file to check the "real" size of the box.

RE: Prestwich Sigma
I was supposed to be out Sunday, that didn't work out but tonight the Sigma hit the water. Very windy conditions so not ideal [] Unfortunately no pics as no one had a camera with them.
I am going to like this boat, first trial I put an ABC 3014 on, not good it wouldn't hit the pipe. Instead of playing with the pipe I put on a 7016/3 that I know works with the engine and current pipe settings and the boat came to life, fast, stable and turns well. No GPS from today but at least as fast as my Lynx on gut feeling. For a first time out and no setup I was really happy. Then threw a 2914 on and pulled the pipe out 1/4" and off it went, when the pipe came on she took off.
With time spent on the setup this is going to be one really good ride [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

RE: Prestwich Sigma
Hi Guys, great looking boat! This maybe off topic but in my opinion Dave Marles for Prestwich Model Boats is the biggest thief in our boating community. The story started two years ago. My friends and I ordered 5 gas tune pipes CS 23 and some other small items together from his store on internet. He charged my credit card 604 pounds right away, and up to now I have not seen anything from him. He keep on saying it takes time to make so many pipes, but two year is a little too long, and he stop answering e-mail from me. So if anybody want to order from him and you are on this side of the pond- US or Canada, you better go to UK to pick it up yourself, because he will not mail it out.
I sound bitter but what will you do if you lost over $1000.00 US to this guy?
