RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
This looks really familiar
Nice Job! You're doing a better job then I did in my first build of this cat
1/16th ply will do fine for all sheeting.
I myself will use a mix, 1/8th for the deck and sides, this will give smoother faces then the 1/16th.
1/16th I will use on the bottom.
Try to use the grain in the wood to help you. Use the grain in the length for front bottom parts.
use it perpendicular to the grain for the steps.
It will be much easier to make the bents that way, I tested this on the small MaxCatV2-S cat I just build.
For the tunnel it is ok also, just put an extra layer of glass [160gr] where the motor will be.
For mounting the tunnel sheeting use the left over contra parts from the inner length stringers.
You can use these to hold the ply in place while the glue cures, it already has the right shape.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hey Harold, Build looks great so far. It seems a bit overdone in the stringer department (12mm)(sorry Marcel) Dont you just love the spring clamps, I picked up a bag of 16 for $9.95 the other day from bunnings. It had a good asortment of sizes in it. Have a good time away.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hi Steve,
The stringers aren't 12mm all the way. It is for optical and mounting use 12mm.
At the bottom where the bottom meets the tunnelside it is only 4mm.
same where the tunnel sheeting is glued, this is also 4mm.
The middle stringer is to create the ridge in the tunnel, that is only for optical purposes
And will make it hardly any heavier.
But makes the final cat look much better.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Please don'get me wrong Marcel, It looks like a great design and will be very strong in all the right places. I made a mono using 5mm, 5ply for the stringers and frames,3mm 4ply for the sheeting. that has taken on a marker boey head on and only minor paint damage.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hi Doug,
I only have a vid of a trial run, I wasn't even on the throtle
It runs about 85Km/h here.
[link=http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg137/MaxCorvette79/?action=view¤t=CorvetteRacing181120070001.flv]TrialRun2007[/link]
In the mean while I have changed the hull a bit and it runs 94km/h, can do more but I haven't taken the time for speed setup yet.
Last measurement was during a handling testrun.
Will try to make a new vid soon.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hi Doug,
No problem is no big secret. At first I had made the ridepads on the bottom 21mm.
The cat ran nice, as you see on the vid, but lost to much speed in the corners.
So I changed the ridepads width and angle, they are now 36mm and have an angle of 5 degrees.
This caused the cat to corner much better and gain a lot of top speed. Only thing is now , if you corner to tight and at high speed it will drift.
I would recommend that Harold makes them +/-35-36mm and give them an angle of 5-7degrees.
Depends on what engine used, standard PUM 5 degrees, tuned PUM 7 degrees.
My next build will have 7 degrees.
I have a build topic of my Cat on [link=http://www.xtremercboats.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=13069]XtremeRCBoats.com[/link] it's a dutch site but there are pics in it that will give a lot of info.
Also a topic of the small version Cat I recently finished for my son, this has more pics and is a building manual for the small version [link=http://www.xtremercboats.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=15151]MaxCatV2-S[/link], almost all is the same as the big Cat.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hello every one, I am back from few day getaway with my wife, witch turned out to be a few days longer then we planed on, had some heart problems on the way home, had to spend a few days in a hospital. All ok now.
This morning I took the build off the building board, snapped a few pics, and put it on a scale, the way it is right now it came at about 5 lb. Got to go find some wood for the sheeting now. Thank you all for the comments.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hi every one,
It has been at least two weeks since I last worked on this cat build, thought I better get back at it. I had to go pick up some wood for the sheeting, I am posting pictures of the type of wood that I am going to be using for the tunnel and the sheeting. Got the tunnel done today, had to cut the sheet to keep it from buckling, Will be doing the bottom sheeting next.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hi Harold,
You could have steamed or dampend the wood, it would have bent a bit better. Wich did you use for the tunnel 1/16 or 1/8?
I'm going to use 1/16 for the bottom and tunnel and 1/8 for the sides and deck for my next build.
Very nice build...

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
Hello Marcel
Thank you for your comments, Wow why did I not think about steaming the wood! I took the clamps and tape off tonight and it looks like I can make it all look like one piece of wood. I am using the 1/16 on the tunnel and bottom, the sides and top are going to get the 1/8 inch. I may be starting the bottom sheeting to morrow.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
The plans should be downloadable at my skydrive [link=http://cid-d15bb0f76da55eb3.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/MaxCat/MaxCatV1-L.zip]MaxCatV1-L.zip[/link]
These plans are on a lengthened [1,5m] A0 drawing file, so any A0 plotter should be able to plot it.
AutoCad DWG and Abode PDF file are included in the zip file.
I'm going to start on a MaxCatV2-L cat soon, this will not be a downloadable plan.

RE: MaxCatV1-L Scratch Build
No shocking changes, some changes are cosmetic other functional
Tunnel design is changed from round to triangle and lowered 10mm. This will give it slightly more lift, much easier to build and mounting hardware is easier.
Also this lowers the center of gravity making it less sensable for barrel rolls in the corner.
This is the main change.
Also the back is closed giving it a lengtened tunnel that will help prevent flips.
Hull is also 5mm less high making it look sleaker.
Here is a pic of the almost finished MaxCatV2-S, my sons boat.. The large version will be the same but twice as large
My V1 hull weighs 9,8Kg, so not to heavy.

Home printer?!, you must have a big printer If you print at 100% it should be ok, I never printed the pdf file since I use AutoCad to plot but it is 100% export of the Solidworks file.
The hull changes are no secret it is just that I made a deal with a cnc plywood kit maker here not to distribute the new drawings.
He sells the ribs/stringers in a kit on his site.
I made a build topic of the small cat on Xtreme, all is shown there, it is in dutch but has a lot of pics so should be clear enough

OK, now I'm really interested. Where can we find this CNC precut kit? If the price is right, may be worth my saved time and troubles to buy. PLEASE let us know where to find this!!!
