Why do you 'throw' gas boats on the water?
Hi guys
I have seen many people 'throwing' their gas boats on the water when launching. Why?
I have a number of electric boats and usually I just lay them gently on the water and then press the throttle when I'm ready. I'm now building my first gas boat.
Can't we do the same with gas boat?
I understand some have clutches and some don't. Still the one with clutches should be able to start from still and the one without would just cruise until the throttle is applied on the transmitter....
Thanks
JC

Depends who you ask I suppose. When I give mine a toss I don't end up getting as wet from the prop on a non-clutched motor. Some may say that their engines may stall due to the drag of not moving in a forward motion. I also toss mine to clear a very shallow area at my local pond so the rudder doesn't slice into the mud.....I'm sure more reasons will follow.

You can just give the boat a light push if the rpm's are up on the boat, if not the motor will stall under the load once it hits the water. A boat with a clutch can be sit on the water without any problems, the load isn't applyed until you give it gas. Again it depends on how deep the water is along the shore, you don't won't to ruin a new prop by sitting it in the sand. My .02
Good luck;

Pretty much like the others, I hate getting hosed down by a roostertail so I try to get them way out there, especially if the driver likes his launched with high RPM when pitting for that person at a race.
Some need the toss, like those types of boats that run lifting props otherwise they'll cavitate.
I feel that there is also less stress on the driveline when you're dealing with an engine that is already running.
Getting a gas boat out far enough when launching is more important to me as when I thought that the water was deep enough, it wasn't and have ruined a couple of props already.

There is no better feeling than tossing a couple of grand in the water and walking away...... Try it you will see what I mean......

Most of the time I do it to clear the bottom and avoid getting my feet wet. Most ponds I run at dont have sudden drop offs.
Only boats I feel it necessary to do it with are riggers and sport hydros who both appreciate not having to plow their way onto the plane.

They try it with the full scale boats but have not perfected the technique http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVVQ6egRjzU [sm=red_smile.gif]

Because with torque and big props we can !!
A GAS boat is typically one tough SOB and really not a plastic toy boat, so why treat it as such
