If you look at these GP boat lower unit you would notice that for the size boat the skeg is actually very small. The skeg is only to give directional stability. Turning is by prop thrust. It would maybe be better to make it wider not longer.

Just my 2 cents

https://sdp-si.com/eStore/Direct.asp?GroupID=614
http://www.huco.com/products.asp?p=true&cat=288

some gear suppliers I found on the web. Maybe it would help

Get that thing sorted. I can not wait any longer to see it run long and strong.

Great work

Cobus

PS boat looks nice on the water.

I think dremel gears are a bit weak. You just proved it.

Cobus,

I once saw a gearcase skeg break off on Scott Gillman's boat in Abu Dhabi in 1997.
Don't know the right sequence of things breaking, but at that turn he also lost his inner sponson !? (just my 2 cents )

BTW: The boat on your pic is the UIM F1 promotor's demonstration twoseater.

hi guys, thanx for all the input, its slowly getting dialed in ,but yes hard to dial in when i can only go a couple of laps and somthing breaks, but on the other hand it is starting to work better, every weekend the runs get longer and faster,as for the skag i think its ok for turning, seems to turn better to the left,i think thats prop torque, ive noticed if u watch the dutch tunnel,he slows right down when he turns & he never cracks it out of the hole, probably afraid to break the gears, ive only seen that one in video, and 1 other 1 accually running, the other 1 is a grey & orange yellow, says winston on it,and of coarse mine, were are all the gear drivin outboards, just wondering, cause i see alot of lower units every one have but ive only seen two others running on the water,id like to see that amps out board & boat going on the water, its probably a patio stone, were are all you gear drivin outboard guys, lets see some new videos, ive only seen 3, one being mine. http://www.youtube.com/user/winstonmicallef

That looks like some wicked boat. Don't be surprised if the glass boat is not much lighter than the wood one. My gas F1 weight is 4.2kg boat alone nothing in it. And it is laid up as thin as possible.

IN the right up next to the picture on Milwaukee's sight it says that it is 2 inches wide Is that the length or the actual thickness or are you only going to use the gears. Do you run oil in the gear drive or grease?

Sharpy,

The German homebuilt outboard of the last pics is not ours and is using an MHZ lower.

I posted a more recent picture of our (VP) outboard at [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8959867/tm.htm]GAS OUTBOARD guys this is our new home[/link] and yes it is a one piece lower with casted in drive and cooling water pickup tubes.

Sharpy, been watchin the progress. im a big fan of your work. when i first read this post i didnt read most of the print only looked at the pics. and thought you were using a right angle drive in the benning. so i went to lowes and picked up a $20Milescraft right angle unit and had it modifyed to accept the weedy motor with the stock clutch. then press in theprop shaft. my machine shop guy said the input shaft is tool steel. he had it on the band saw and it didnt even mark it up. my only concern is that the prop has what i think is a little too excessive play in it as is with the shaft mounted. the gears should be solid enough though. i have a aqua craft2 2/3"prop on it. have not done any testing with it just yet. as i am still working on mounting brackets and finishing the boat it goes to. the build is on another forum.

very cool , sleeper, your going to need a very long boat to canter the weight of a weedy motor,i know with my tunnel hull , i tryed with a 40", and all it did was cat walks, the tunnel im running know is 5 feet ,and it still pulls the front up in the air, thats with the motor trimed way back, almost too far off the neutral position, meaning foward under the transom,so ive added weight to counter the boat, as for selling these units there crazy bob , im still testing, the gears seem to be fine ,its keeping the press fit on the shafts thats giving me proplems, so ive decided to build a whole new drive, that has a larger bearing and gear, i can get the parts much easyer if a tad bit larger, and not compramize the size of the whole unit,as for selling one, i need to make one that will stay together for more that acouple of runs, but iam getting there, i will keep you guys posted, thanx for being interested,SHARPY

Sharpy, I have a round nose style boat still in the build process. The bottom is like a tunnel hull, whenI started to built it i only saw pics from the back and thought it was more like a tunnel instead of the proper hydro bottom. Its 37"long 22" wide with about 1.75lbs of extra weight in front. What if youmachined the shaftand gear together out of tool steel.Onthe right angle drive it has a ring made out of a rod in a grove holding the bearings in like a retaining ring. One of the biggest reasons for a long boat is the weight of the motorI think, so i wouldnt be quick to make anything bigger on the motor. Unless you could figure out some way of putting enough lightning holes in it and keep the scale look.

ok well all is good , got the tunnel wet this weekend , and all stayed together ,burned up 2 full tanks of fuel with no gear problems,i have the boat really trimmed under and it still wants to blow over with out a little weight in the front, so im going to build a little longer hull 54" should be good, got some good videos,i will try and post this week. o and sleeper i stiil think you will need a longer boat, but you should finnish your shovel, and try it any way, maybe the nose weight will keep it level.

hey sharpy, one more idea, have you tried moving the motor up out of the water more. this would make less rotating force created from the prop. you then might have to relocate the water pickup for long runs, full scale motors use a low water pickup in the bottom front of the nose cone.

Hi Sharpy, I think your doing an outstanding job creating something of your own design and in a more scale outboard look too.
Can't wait to see finished product and I know if things work and are within alot of peoples budget( no 2brothersRc price)
then you could do really well if you chose onsell them. I certainly would love one of these more scale looking units.

Keep us posted on your progress, gotta love those Tunnels.

Cheers
Chris
