OUTBOARD DRIVE home built
just bought a emco mill lathe, for the price of a mh$ s6 stern drive. ive made other outboard drives for my tunnel boat, but the cable style didn,t last, worked good & fast, but liked to eat cables, so i made 1 with a 90 degree air die grinder , worked ok , but there under drivin, by about 20 percent, so i have new plan, buy mill lathe , use 18 dollar air die grinder gears and make my own gear drivin outboard lower leg.total cost so far 518.00 bucks , got all tooling with the mill lathe used, check it out. also switched gears, now its over drivin.

RE: OUTBOARD DRIVE home built
hi mat, yea i hope the gears do ok ,the only problem switching them is the mesh is know backwords, ive bench tested the drive, it seems good at 18000 rpm, i used another die grinder for that, at 100 psi, thats what its rated for 18000 rpm,by rights the prop shoud of been spinning 20 percent faster, now of corse thats with no load, every thing seems good though, no metal in the oil , afterwords, i run it on and off for about 10 minates , i have a question for you mat, how big are the gears in a mhz sterndrive, just wondering, the die grinder gears are 3/4 di & 1/2 di. well thats all for now.

Great job!!!....can only add to the kudos....Looking ahead, I think you will have a big problem turning a gas OB hull with the short skeg....one at least twice as long might do the job...check out the skeg on F. Lowe's Outlaw lower dr. and the Gmorty (?)..made in Australia...even the lower units used on the old AMPS OBs made for nitro engines had their problems..solved by the way, by power trim off a third channel to tuck the engine under on turns...keep at it, we need gas OB inovators and boaters!!!

Nice work Sharpy. Brings back memories of my CNC Lathe days!
I would not trust the 90 degree Dremel gears as they barely hold up on a Dremel. I have already busted a set I bought 2 weeks ago and used 4 times. Not very durable from my experience.
Cheers,
John

Sorry for the delay - let me track down a few old gears I have to give you an idea of size.
Another option may be a high end right angle air ratchet/nut runner (basically the same as a die grinder but more torque and less RPM). I will take pics of mine along with gears tomorrow
Hard to beat the price of a discount die grinder though - now if you could find someone who sells the heads you would be all set!!!

I don't think weight should be and issue. Run the thing lets see what it does. That's the important point. Looks good though got me machining and trying new ideas.
