Default RE: Apache build

I have not had a chance to update this post in quite a while so here it goes.

We managed to burn four 500ml bags of fuel thru the RCMK. Best speed to date was 45mph with a stock 275. I am now running a three bladed prop from Tony at WHH wich is giving us a bit more control and speed thru the turns but the top end has dropped to 41mph. I'm trying to find a 7015 as recomended by Chris to try out before spending any money.

We also decided to use a 3" offset 90 degree whcih kept most of the pipe inside the hull. Here are some pictures of the exhaust system installation in progress. It's almost time to start patching up the extra holes and get her ready for paint.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Is'n too long that 3" offset header for a proper tuning lenght with a 2"band pipe? I'm building an apache too (56") and i would like to fit all the pipe (hanson 2"band) in the hull , i don't know what header choose the 2" or the 3" ,my fear is that with the 3" you can't shorten enough the exhaust if needed.

Ps: I think with a good prop ( 7016 /2) only one rudder and without the transom pickup ( maybe propblast or under the keel) you can reach 48-50

My old 57 inch (12kg) vee with stock zenoah 257 carb 7016 woodoo and not a very good tuning (exhaust and trim) i reached 37,2mph

Yes you can tune the 3" offset header just fine ,if you have room which you do in those big hulls .Its the best option because it keeps the pipe inside the hull better ,dont forget you measure a pipes tuned length round the bend of the header to the widest part of the pipe or in a 2" bands case to the centre of the band.So a 3" offset brings the pipe further into the boat than say a 1" or 2" offset will. The tuned length will be the same but less pipe will be hanging back there ,hope that makes sense lol.

Default RE: Apache build

I could not have said it any better Mart. I still wish we could have kept more of the pipe in the boat but that would require moving the CG forward or adding dead weight to the back of the boat to offset the engine placement. I did think about using a deep vee pipe but I could not find one that fit the budget. Then you have the debate over tunning a deep vee???

Isola, we could not go with a bottom pickup because the iso pad for the stuffing tube is in the way. I am not a fan of prop blast pickups so that was not even considered. The transom pickup may be dropped in favor of a pair of WHH rudders with built in pickups. The rudders shown in the pictures are a set that I drilled out myself.

She runs just fine with one rudder but it's my sons boat and he likes the extra control the dual rudders give him on left turns.

do you have any better pics of your WHH rudders? i wish tony built them as water pick-ups, but he said he will not for various reasons. i thought about drilling them myself. did you do it on your own, or have a machine shop handle it?

Yes I did them myself on a small press. The hardest part was finding a drill bit with a long fluted shank. The only ones Lowes carred at 1/8 did not have a long enough spiral flute to channel the waste material upwards preventing the bit from jamming and breaking. I went thru three bits to make the modifications, I wound up returning the broken bits.

I will take some pictures for you tonight and post them here. Edited to add pictures

Check the post above and let me know if you would like any more pictures or details. I modified them by determining the angle of the downward hole and setting up the drill press to match it. It needs to be precise because you dont have much material on either side if you use a 1/8 bit. You must also be careful not to hit the cross holes used to mount the control arm. If you are only using a single rudder you may be able to use the screw hole (used for the crossbar) that is already there as a guide. The primer you see on the rudder will be sanded and then painted black. We may go ahead and paint all the hardware flat black, not sure yet.

BTW Tony does sell a set that is already drilled for the RD1 drive. I have a set on the way and once they arrive I will test to see if they fit the SPDIII setup.

i never noticed that the two rudders seem to have similar mounts. maybe thats the way to go. i would rather not screw up one or both of my rudders trying to acheive something thats readily available.

Quick update my FleeBay $8.50 WWH RD-1 arrived. A quick drill and tap for the Rudder Tie Bar and they bolted right up. I have allready contacted Tony about offering them as a direct replacement.

Here are some pictures for everyone considering the swap. Sorry guys not sure why the pictures are so large????[sm=confused.gif]

Default RE: Apache build

I heard back from Tony at WHH and he asked me to post this on my build thread so that everyone understands why his rudders are offered the way they are.

"Leo,
Yes very good, I designed them both similar. The reason we offer the SPD III without the rudders drilled is because for the average sport boater that uses a clutch, there is a issue of running the boats close to shore at slow speeds. This has proved hundreds of times to clog the water system with mud, so in the late 80's I designed the transom water pick-up and use them on all RTR Enforcer boats.
The RD-1 as a race drive is offered to the racers that do not use clutches, so in all honesty the transom pick-up is better if you are not racing.
Thanks,
Tony C."
and he also followed it up with another email.

"Leo,
Please explain this on the forum, I do not want people to think that one is better than the other and if they don't have a rudder pick-up they have something inferrior. The transom pick-up causes a slight amount of friction, but very slight and actually provides better water pressure, and I strongly recommend them for the play/ boater. Sometimes guys that race forget where they started and they tend to express their, now experienced ways of doing things without thinking of what it was like for them when they started. We sell products by the thousands and are quick to receive feedback's both good and bad. That in itself has prompted many of my designs, re-designs, as well as new innovations over the years.
Thanks,
Tony C."

Well we could not resist taking the Apache out for a few more runs at the lake today before she is stripped down and painted. The wind was howling 25-35knots enough to create small white caps on 4-6 inch waves. We could not have asked for more from her. Here are some pictures.

wow, your camera does really take some nice pics! Leo, was it me or did i see that the apache was a little loose yesterday? I am sure that if you would have messed with the trim tabs she would have been able to full throttle through that "choppy water" 100% (i know you have the trim tabs up a bit for speed). What i am trying to say is that running constant 45mph in 4-6 inch chop is BA* A**!!!!! and I am sure your boat is capable of it! If you noticed, i started a thread between 57 signature AM and the 56 apache. i should just get a one of those big boats for when it's too windy, that way i can still go out an play....

You are correct I had the trim tabs all the way up. I left them the way I had them two weeks ago because we weren't going to be running her yesterday.

I am looking forward to getting the other Apache running very soon. It's going to be fun having a pair running at the same time. Our goal is to have at least four running at once.

Ooh and thanks for the compliments on the pictures I didn't get a chance to clean them up in photoshop all I did was crop them. That's my son's camera but since it's his boat I had to take the pictures, not bad for burst mode I could have done better but it was a little overcast and I was just trying to get some quick action shots.

Hey Ed don't forget to PM me your email addy.

Thanks Robert,

We need you to bring some of your toys down and show us how those big dogs of yours run. Hey hold on to those drives we talked about. I have to hit the bank account hard this week so money is a bit low right now.

lewisdf4, thanks glad it could get you going again.

Here is my next Apache. Less to do on this one but the letters and eagle will be the first things to go.

Why twin rudders? Why do all you people bolt on twin rudders?
I am yet to see a boat here in Oz with two rudders.
Nice boat though.

This latest Apache came this way. On my son's Apache (the build thread) he likes two rudders. He feels it gives him better control left and right when leaning into turns. We did run it with one rudder and it worked just fine. Remember we are not after all out speed just some fast fun on the water. Anything over 45mph and we are happy.

But hey the 65" is going to have a different set of twin steering
