RE: Dumas Scarab 38kV Build from NIB Kit
LOL, that's great! I take it that the beautiful lady is the closest you have for "Tubbs"?? That'll do fine!!
A few quick questions about your boat:
1. Do your hatches open back to front, or front to back?? Can't see the hinges.
2. Dumas suggests a radar arch that is of equal width on top. But I could swear that your arch swells forward in the middle.
3. Are there 2 stern cleats on the front, on both sides of the center spine??
Sorry for the nitpicky details, but I would like to get this thing right.
Thanks!
Darin

RE: Dumas Scarab 38kV Build from NIB Kit
Hey Darin...I actually just looked at some info on the arch from both Wellcraft and Dumas. The Arch that comes in the kit is supposed to be trimmed in the back: I think there is a drawing of the trim line in relation to the original piece some place. It is wider at teh bottom and tapers to the top on the sides and then thinner at the edges and then come to a wider point in the center directly at the top.
I forgot to trim mine prior to getting it painted. A small detail but one that I noticed last night and will haunt me for many years to come!

Harvey- the picture I have in the instructions shows the rough unfinished arch- with a parallel line along the top 1" wide from front to back. The 38kV's I've seen have a bowed out section right at the top as you suggested. I asked CaptRKO what his real arch looks like- so he can tell us for sure.
Thanks! Oh, by the way, the prop that was suggested to me was a 7015-3- by a reputable prop guy (supplied by you!). Mine is on order right now.
Thanks!

I'll get ya some pictures of my Arch when I get home. I was offered $10,000 for the Arch by some guy in Holland-I was thinking of taking it off-but now I will keep it on as it gives the boat some character!
My hatches open back to front, so in other words you can open them and run fast with out them blowing open via the oncoming wind. I'll get some pics for ya....

Thanks Randy! I'll have to fabricate some stainless steel spines for the hatches themselves- you have three on each one, while other Wellcraft years have 4.
DO NOT SELL THAT ARCH! I read somewhere that it was a 5000 buck option on the new one?? That arch gives it a distinct look!
Thanks!

MHZ Z-drive, EH! Those things are awesome!!! Just make sure you keep it full of oil and change it religiously!!! I almost toasted one not being careful.
I tbelieve they make a counter-rotating one (standard rotation on the input side and counter-rotating on the output side). Maybe JAW has one mounted on something??? I read it is supposed to help with the torque roll maybe??? Prop choices used to be an issue but there are a lot of CR props now...? May be worth a look if you have not ordered it yet otherwise standard roation has worked for a while for us all...
I tried Werner, he is on Holiday until August 4th or so...I would LOVE that!!!! Boating time!!!
How is the build coming otherwise?

Trey- I struggled with this for hours the other night. I really like the one you are installing, but the S6's are way cool, and look so real. I would love to paint one gloss black, and put the mercruiser stripes on it. I already received the 7015-3 prop from Dasboata, and it's for standard rotation. How do your Z-drives run in your big MHZ boat?? I'm sure that oil is critical!! Let me have your honest opinion on this- I can't cut my transom until I'm sure.
Thanks!
Darin
P.S. Build is at standstill- holiday traveling rest of this week, and have to offload some RC car stuff on FleaBay for funds.

mine...er eh uh...I cheated...I bought the Apache RTR...yeah. i said it...RTR
Single motor, gear box, two output shafts CR...the drives are "standard rotation" each. The look AWESOME but they require a bit more maintenance FOR SURE! For the Apache...it's totally worth it. But it is certainly nice to have another boat (Dumas Scarab) that is "easier" to maintain and run and still look cool. that was my though on going with the WD200 setup...still looks way cool but easier to rig (not drilling a hole and mounting the stuffing tubve through the radio box) and maintain (just yank the shaft out the back of the boat, wipe off, and grease down, slide her back int eh drive...).
For the S6 drives on the apache tha hassle is TOTALLY worth it. I am lucky to have two boats!

Cool- thanks Randy! I just received 8 brass cleats, as well as tiny hinges for the hatches on the deck. This should be interesting!

I got my dress up kit you told me about, I'm gonna use the vents and thats about it, the wheel and hatch covers aren't usable to me as my hatches are a bit different, and I have no cockpit. Oh well. The vents will look sweet! Thanks for pointing them out to me Darin! Now get after those stringers! lol

Thanks Dave! I will certainly get to glassin' her in!! Those vents- I just used a little polishing wheel on my Dremel, some polishing paste, and they come out like chrome! You can choose to paint the inside of each scoop flat black for scale looks. Make sure to put a layer of clear coat on them to prevent oxidation!! Regarding the hatches- they don't exactly fit my Scarab-60 either- my fake hatches are square, while the dressup kit hatches are rectangular. I went ahead and silicone glued them on top anyway, and you can't really tell- looks great on the water!!
