ORIGINAL: jocolo

It's been made in California
It came out of Canada it was a copy of a Swiss Cat, the guys in Europe are very angry that there hull design was splashed.
In fact they are so angry that the guy who made the original hull has promised never to sell his hulls in the USA ever (Big Deal), whatever I feel about that it’s still a nice hull design

He doesn't need to sell them here, we have copies........:)

Seriously, thats not going to solve anything, they will just buy one off english ebay or some other ebay in europe or get one over there and send it back. You won't stop the splashers.

Click the link & read the thread real good. Our buddies across the pond are quick to react & really hate corporate America it seems. Fine. But don't ever say these guys haven't copied something else & made a buck off it. I know first hand.

Besides , who the heck could afford the rate for the shipping from overseas for that monster anyway ? ( cost would be almost as much as the hull would cost  )
Besides , 8 foot ?????
Why not just sit your butt in there and steer it anyway ? Why make it RC'ed ? :):):):):):):):):)

RE: A 8 ft. catamaran

If anybody should be pissed off it's the company that manufactures the real version of that hull (and you know its a copy of one of those European superboat teams). as a person who used to work for a !QUOT!real!QUOT! custom boat building company, I can tell you that even with real boats a copy only has to be changed 15% from the original to be legally copied, re-manufactured, and sold by some other company. One might ask !QUOT!how do you gage a 15% change?....!QUOT!. Answer? Thats a damn good question! You really kinda can't. In-fact w/real boats its fairly common for new or small low budget company to purchase big manufacturer's retired molds make very, very, very slight changes to it, retool it and begin production. I guarantee that Warehouse Hobbies, Aeromarine, Bonzi or most any other of these companys DO NOT have a license protecting them from people pulling a mold and selling copies without even having to change it at all. They stole their designs from Cigarette, Apache, Fountain, and freely use their names too probably without consent. Sorry for the lecture but it pisses me of when people in our very small hobby with very limited vendors to choose from resort to strong arming their compitition which in turn keeps prices higher than necessary

I cant see a reason to complain about a copy. If that is what you want and buy, then good luck to you. If you want to pay an arm and a leg for a hull from overseas, again, good luck to you. This is a hobby, not a profession for most of us. I have met the guys from aeromarine, They do excellent work and these guys were more help to me than HH, that is for sure. If you are happy with the person that builds your hulls, then stick with them. I am not a professional at this HOBBY, just looking for quality parts and pieces at an affordable rate, and life is too short to deal with A**holes. Happy boating where ever you get it.

What are you going to power it with Bill.

I spoke with Mark about the Ferrari hull (I just purchased his other Callan hull) though he mentioned riveting in some alloy plate for engine mounts. I asked for pictures but got none of the plate. I am not sure about the air grilles cut in the back of the cowl either. I will see. He has yet to ship my Callan so may ship two together ($100 more in shipping :D ). I brought the Callan for myself and looking at the Ferrari for a buddy.

I have been looking at all the options with the three who are currently making it. Certainly Hanspeter/Curt did the work and deserve the credit for creating this marvel. True it has been copied and that copy - copied[sm=tired.gif]. I have heard varying opinions by the 4 other buyers of this hull from Canada but for the price it will make a reasonable budget platform for my next project.

I have built several big cats including the 69" MHZ with a Blata so figure this is the next logical step. Powering it on the other hand will be a challenge since a QD will be a squeeze and Blatas are likely out of the question. - I will keep you posted on progress !!

im not sure yet, still in the process, just i know its gotta be twin zenoahs, got any idaes for engines yourself?

Justaddwata 07-11-2005 05:22 PM

RE: A 8 ft. catamaran

I am looking at either Multiple Blata 40 clones or 6 Zenaohs (2 banks of three). I was thinking of two banks of two motors but believe the added HP for minimal investment would make an extra two zens worth having on board. Twin Zenoahs wont do much to move her. Huge wetted surface. Twin QD35's may get her into respectable sport speeds. I also have twin QD35's and twin Mathe 35's I can experiment with though think space in the sponson will be extremely tight. Thats where I am thinking the Blata clones may be out of the question without radical hull modifications. I will measure her up once she gets here.

Here is the Genuine Swiss hull with 6 Zens. I believe the work was done by Hanspeter also. Masterpiece !!

I have not seen the motors / couplers. It is easy to mate two motors and I already have the parts on the way to do it (about $50 in parts to mate 6 motors). I am not sure if I will be installing one bank of motors in reverse to counterrotate the prop as I have a counterrotating drive option already. Will make setup easier though. Unlike this installation I am planning on having the carbs inboard and the exhaust outboard (likely not running 6 tuned pipes at the sacrifice of about 6-10hp). Save almost $1000 though and make it that much easier. I plan on running a pair of Custom Super Smoker clutches which will handle that power. Waiting on hull though which I am getting used to following my last order of a 96" vee.

Love the bigger scale boats though. My aim is for 50mph - more than that is a bonus but for sport running - unnecessary.
