What can anyone tell me about this?
Hi guys bought this boat today. I am new to nitro boats. Was told it has not been started in a few months. It came with a JRradio. Guy needed money so I was game for it. Said to have a .40 motor on the back of it OS of course. Curious to what anyone can tell me about it. I was told it takes a high speed drill or airplane starter to crank it. WHEREDOISTART?

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
boat is a Lynx tunnel hull (I believe they are still competitive and hard to get, well hard to get the real one and not the copy).
Engine is an OS MAX XM but a .21 not a .40
approx 1.5hp, good little race engine.
look the engine over to make sure it turns freely with good compression.
you would need some nitro fuel - 20 to 50% with at least 16 to 18% oil.
runs well on 30% and even better on 50%.
you could replace the plastic/carbon prop with either a grimracer 40x52 or 40x53 tri-metal prop (only a suggestion, there are other good props out there).
OS #8 glow plug (or O'Donnell, or McCoy),
glow starter,
after run oil,
one of these: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXJC35&P=ML (doesn't have to be that one).
also something like this: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXL370&P=M

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
its a fiberglass hull. Does not have any leaks. Had it floating in the bath tub to check. I spun the motor over by hand and it has very good compression. I have to go get hobby fuel but its about an hour drive. I was planning on running 30% nitro fuel in it. This boat is going to get a paint job I think as this orange isn't the most appealing.
It has a metal prop on it now I will try and get another pic of it.
#8 Glow plug is that the same number for OS or O'Donnell
Will this boat run really fast as the owner said. He claimed around 58Mph on the water.

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
OS #8
O'Donnell #9,
O'Donnell red dot,
McCoy-8, or 55.
58 is a big number, not impossible but big.
I have seen 56mph, but, the boat was ridding on the edge, no waves or wake, maybe some small ripples and no other boats.
can only go straight, the boat is too loose to turn.
for having fun or racing with other boats, top 40's maybe 50ish.
its not how fast can you go but can you stay with the others and finish.

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
I threw the 58mph number out there as thats what the original owner said. Not looking to go that fast. But fast enough to where the boat is still relatively stable. Iam new to nitro boats hence all the questions. I will be on my way to the hobby store monday as I am working all weekend. I did get the charger to recharge the battery in the boat. The Remote is a JR Xr2i with a R125 reciever in the boat. The steering servo is a JR Z650m. Is there any maintenance that needs to be done? Does the carb need cleaned? If so with that? Only reason I ask is the boat hasn't ben run in a few months.

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
the servos are fine,
I am not a big fan of AM radio's, I would opt for an FM instead, I personally use Futaba 2.4Ghz.
I would most definitely clean the engine and the carb, you don't want any crap going in.
spare silicone fuel line would also be a plus.

Okay as for cleaning the engine and carb. Does that mean getting the junk off the outside. I could carefully spray with some cleaner or degreaser. Or does that mean removing the carb and cleaning it with carb cleaner or something of that nature.

On the OS engines page there is a link to my motor. At the bottom of the tech notes it states this is not an ABC engine. What does that mean?

ABC in the world of nitro engines means- ALUMINUM BRASS CHROME the piston is aluminum, the sleeve brass, with a chrome plating inside

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
I can barely see a Technology Fuels sticker on the boat, it's made by John Otto so hopefully he ran the stuff as it's good.
OS made these engines with 2 different sleeves, the ABC and an ABN (Nickle-plated).
One thing that I failed ot see mentioned is that the starter wires have to be reversed to start it properly, very important!
No, it won't do that speed in stock form, expect high 40's with the right setup. 56 MPH is a push with it modified and yours isn't.
Yes, there were some Lynxes that aren't true Lynxes going around as the real ones are in demand and a little harder to get.

How would Iknow if its a true lynxs hull. I will also call the previous owner and find out if he knows or not.

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
Right now I'd have a little problem in believing the seller as he's already over-exaggerated as few things like engine size and speed. How to tell a Splash is harder unless you have a real one to compare it to. Generally a copy won't have the quality of the real thing. Not too many of the splashes got out so chances are good that yours is the real deal.
We call fake wannabe hulls generally molded from the real original boat a Splash. You'll find a lot of these being sold on eBay.

Seems OS has good things to say about the "XM" marine motor

this is just a couple, other people should chime in with other choices.

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
i cant remember which is am and which is fm but 72 mhz is prone to glitching and interference, and i think has less range, where as 2.4 ghz is almost glitch and interference free, much more reliable, and far easier. i strongly reccomend 2.4.

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
Okay, here's how the systems work:
AM uses changing signal height to transmit commands. Due to the transmitted wave style, it's not a "line of site" signal and therefore has the best long range performance. The problem is it's very suseptible to interference
FM comes with two signal patterns working of the principle of frequency modulation. The first is the standard FM, which used a basic frequency modulating signal. The second pattern uses the standard FM signal, broken down into a series of command pulses. The advantage of FM is that it's much less prone to glitching and interference than AM systems and can handle more channels per transmitted signal. The problem is that both versions of FM are line of site, meaning that if you can't see it, you can't control it.
Now we get to the latest and greatest, 2.4 GHZ. This uses a very high frequency FM signal that is sent to a receiver that is coded to match the transmitter. This gives the advantage of being highly resistant to interference, several radios can be transmitting at once on the 2.4 band and glitching is minimal. The problems are that the 2.4 systems are line of site, like FM, and by using that high of frequency the transmitted signal can and will reflect off the water rather than go through the water like the lower frequency signals can. I know Futaba has made receivers with multiple antennas to minimize this and I believe the Spectrum system has changed their receivers to correct this as well.

Depending on your wallet, you can get buy with a Flysky. http://www.hobbypartz.com/79p-gt3b-carradio-lcd.html
I was going to add that the OB spin start the opposite as a inboard. If your a weekend hobbyist and don't want to race you'll be fine. I ordered 4 receivers and my 2nd Flysky. I plan on racing RC trucks and the Skyfly fits my income. I plan on running Futaba in my boats. I took out a receiver inside my truck and added it to one of my boat hulls and I had problems. servo's unresponsive. WHY???? Flysky isn't a Futaba but it works.

RE: What can anyone tell me about this?
Hi guys I removed the prop and there isn't a flexible shaft there. The pics are below. The manual says that oil line from the bottom of the motor to the outboard case keeps oil on the shaft. Does that shaft come out? HELP
The thread on the shaft where nylock is to remove the prop was a standard thread not reverse.

links to your pictures doesn't seem to be working.
however, just by removing the prop will not reveal the flex cable.
