RE: The UNOFFICIAL 3.5/.21 Tunnel thread
Speed is relative. When you are racing, the fastest boat almost never wins, especially on a tunnel boat. As far as what the top speed ive personally ever seen out of a OS:
Sport (no tuned pipe) 52mph.
Mod with a pipe and timing changes 53mph.
My Rossi runs about the same, but it has had a lot of work to get it there. Stock Rossi 3.5's are PIGS. You would be hard pressed to get more than 40-43mph out of a stock Rossi 3.5, gold head, silver head, 4 bolt or 6 bolt it doesnt mattter. They are WAY too conservative from the factory.
Seriously..... forget the speed numbers. Just make your boat fast and consistant. Learn how to drive on the course, and use a stopwatch to time your laps. You can make a boat go faster than the above, but when you are heat racing you would be shooting yourself in the foot. My heat race boats run about 48 to 50 mph. Anything more and its not consistant. I have run at the last three Tunnel Championships and have done quite well with a midlle of the road fast boat. Sure there are boats that will run close to the 60mph mark, but they rarely have to.
Ask Mike Zaborowski. He is easily the most consistant and smooth driver I know. His boats are NOT the fastest at the pond. He will tell you this as well. But how many wins does he have?? LOTS of them.

Cobus, I honestly have never had a problem getting up to temp with the OS. I normally run non restricted water, with the stock pick-up. The stock pickup hole is only about 0.040" so it is fairly restricted to start off with. The only problem I have had is overheating on those engines, especially with the stock Nickel plated sleeve. Once you over heat it once, the nickel flakes off, and the rest is history. If you are running no cooling at all, then you should be able to fry eggs on the head of that thing. Pull the sleeve to check for blue dis-coloring and also check for flaking at the top of the sleeve.
Here is my advice.
Run 60% nitro, 12-14% Morgan Synth, and 2% castor. Leave the shim out, run a K&B 1L plug. The R5 is too cold for this engine, even with the higher nitro. They like a hotter plug, the K&B 1L is the best we have found so far. Jack the motor up, they dont make any torque, but will rev to the moon. The OS typically likes to be where the bottom of the bullet casting is level with the bottom of the sponsons. This will put the bottom of the prop shaft about 1/8" or so above the sponson bottom. Run a low pitch prop. Typically 2.7-2.9" is what a truely stock OS engine likes to pull at a nice high rpm. Once you get a little more power out of it, you can run a little more pitch. If you guys are still running these things on those 7.5 hulls, dont expect a lot out of them, its just to much for it to push around. Hope this helps, ~James

Thanks alot. Will try your suggestions. BTW this hull although heavy is ideal for our conditions. We normally have quite a chop on the water and anything lighter you have to ride on the throttle not be upside down. But we are working on getting it lighter.

I understand about the conditions. It isnt just a weight issue, but the size of the hull as well. You have stuff alot of air under it to get it up on step where it should be, and I fear the OS may struggle to do this. If you made the tunnel area a little narrower or shallower it may still be good for rough water, but would be easier for lift. Just thinking outloud. Most guys have a "rough water" setup which consist of a longer, but generally not much wider/bigger hull. Running tunnels in rough water is never fun, regardless of the hull.... Good luck with it!

Hi James I must tell you the boat hadles very nicely and is not to shy on the speed. What I do love about the bigger hull on the M shape coarse is that I can turn at full throtle. But will see how it goes at the next race. Will keep you up to date. Thanks for the temp tips. Will go up to 60 % nitro now.

Arrie, are you having trouble with temps also or is this the same motor Cobus is talking about? Also, if the boat works for what you guys are doing, by all means carry on! I think this is a fairly new class for you guys right? As long as everyone is having fun, who cares right?

Yes James its the same boat. This hull has a 1/2" x 3 " wide volume reducing area down the middle of the hull. I think its doing the same as making the tunnel narrower.

Hi James it is the same boat Cobus is talking about. And also if I get much more speed the boat wil be a hand full around the M shape coarse. Also the wind is going to be 45 kmph NW this weekend so we wount eaven use full power. But with the heavy hull I can run 100% throttle in the straight witch I love. When are you comming to visit us? I am sure Wennie will make you nice braaivleis (SA stile) when you are here. You will never want do a HOTDOG again when you taste Boerewors on a SA Braai (Barbeque).

Haha.... Ive heard good things about the SA Braai. I am always up for a new taste. I dont know when I will be coming over yet, im not even 100% sure if Im coming. I have some other issues that need to get resolved, and it will also have to be after the World Tunnel Champs in March. I was initially thinking maybe September, but I dont know. Have to see what dates the Wife (travel director) thinks also.
That sounds like a windy upcoming race. I remember a race a number of years back at the Atlanta Spring Nationals that I had about 1.5 kilos of lead on the balance point of my HTB290. It was rediculously windy, but I went on to win the race. It wasnt pretty, or a hard fought battle, but a win is a win. I hate it when a race becomes a game of survival, but atleast everyone has to run on the same water. I guess the boat probably weighed about 8-9 pounds with all of the extra lead. Some times you have to do what you have to do.

Sepetember is a great time to visit as everything is nice and green after winter and the animal parks have new babies and the flowers are blooming in the Karoo and suddenly I am hearing harp music playing and the with a thundering crash this whole club will sit you down on a hard plastic chair next to the dam and pepper you with questions of how to go faster. we might even consider mayby giving you a Wellington (brandy) and Coke to soffen you up.

LOL.... mmm.... brandy and coke. You have my attention sir.
So what exactly is a Boerewors? Dont forget that I live in the land of sausage and brats.... so maybe I have seen/tasted them under a different name?
Regardless, it sounds like fun.

LOL... I dont think the blowup mattress will work for the wife. If I were coming by myself, thats one thing, but I have to keep the boss happy. I am sure it will happen, just have to figure out when. Ive already got decent prices on flights.
