RE: Hydro Build Challenge: racer504 WoF 3.5 tunnel
Here is an addition to this thread that hopefully, no one else will have to make to their build thread. On the first run of this boat the owner and another friend of mine decided they could occupy the same space at the same time. Yes, they collided. I had my back turned and did not see the crash but I had built both boats and knew from years of modeling that familiar sound of stuff breaking. The new boat took all the damage. The boat that cut him off suffered no damage. I thought it might be interesting to some to see how this repair went. When I first looked at it I really didn't know how best to repair it as I had not needed to in the past. If it would have been my own boat I would probably have just chunked it built a new one. I considered replacing the entire sponson, but the problem of duplicating a hand built part seemed daunting. My decision to repair it was based mostly on the fact that the inside sponson sheeting was still mostly intact. That gave me a point to work from. You can see how the sheeting was ripped off the front of the left sponson. The pictures show how the repair was done. I'll post in 2 parts due to the number of pictures.

One of the nice things about building with foam is the ability to make repairs. Unlike fiberglass hulls that will sometimes crack seams and crush, foam absorbs the impact and crumples. Yes, there is a difference between "crushed" and "crumpled." I've also replaced entire front sponsons. Nice work on the repair.

Jul, How you doin? Here are a couple of links to a race report on the boat. This and the pictures are of the same design but not the exact same boat. The pics are of Jame's winning boat. It was built at the same time as the project boat and is essentialy the same boat. Sorry, no video. Mike
