Default I Need a Measurement off a O.S. 46VX-M

I might put an o.s. 46vx-m in my Whiplash. Anyone know the distance between the glow plug center and the widest point of the header on the o.s 46? I am trying to figure out whether I can package a rear exhaust engine. I am making my own cowl, so I can make that clear as needed.

Anyone already have this engine in a Whiplash?

I know this engine has less hp than a MAC or CMB, but I have had good luck with o.s. engines so was going to give it a try. I do plan on racing the boat in 2009, but since I will be a first time racer, I think my driving will be the weakest link anyways. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

i dont know the distance, but i know that making your own cowl is what will save you with the use of this motor, im building a whip 20 and man its hard to fit rear exhaust, not even sure you could

Default RE: O.S. 46VX-M in a Whiplash??

Hey malicent how much does that 20 whiplash weigh? I am between a 20 whiplash or an aeromarine 30 inch cat. I want a boat that will catch plane ease with little effort from the engine, I have CMB valvola rs7 with a 3280 ops pipe or AB small volume pipe(i have both pipes). I use to have it on a 33 inch seaducer but that hull was too flat and too wet. It put the engine under too much constant stress to bring the whole hull out of the water. It would do it and go about 45mph but you can tell that it isn't an efficient boat. I am guessing on an easy hull, "that air helps it ride" the RS7 will really get to the RPM's and really SHINE! I have all the engine and hardware just sitting around, i am itching to slap it on to something! THANKS FOR ANY HELP! eddie

OS 46 should be between 9 1/2" to 10 1/2'' to the fat part of the pipe.

10-1/2" ought to put you in the neighborhood. OS advises that you use an 11cc pipe on that engine. Why, I don't know.

While the pipe length is helpful, I need to know how wide the HEADER is from the engine center line. Since the O.S. is a rear exhaust engine, header clearance will be tight for a sport 40 hydro, and I need to know whether I can make it work before buying the engine.

Thanks.

I changed the title so that I might get a measurement from someone with this engine. Measure from the glow plug center to the widest point of the header. Do not include the width of the coupler tubing for connecting the pipe.

Thanks.

Blackout, I am confused at what you are talking about , #1 almost all marine 40 size engines are rear ex, and thats a good thing as the header has no bends to rob breathability [like my new word]#2 what do you mean by the widest part of the header? the headers are angled up at the flange for clearance of the hull, in short if a os engine won't fit that hull then nothing will!!!!!!!!

F16Man,

CMB and MAC's are front exhaust engines. The exhaust exits the front of the engine which is the same end as the flywheel. This is the correct terminology used in the industry. The Novarossi 21 and OS 46 are rear exhuast engines and the header wraps around the side of the engine which can cause clearance issues on Sport hydros. I need to know how tight the header wraps around the engine on the OS 46.

That OS 46 is going on a Whiplash Sport Hydro Boat, not for a plane.

Oh boy I'm a dummy now ,I wonder what the heck they were thinking building a marine engine with ex out the rear when they know it has to go the other way. I just went to the os web and did my homework they redesigned it for ducted fan use and instead of building it specific for marine they just water cooled the head and throw a 180 header on it, plus its a one piece case now. If you are going to use an os you will need to find a vintage one with the
early case as they were built correct for marine use

Another problem with the o.s 46 is that the price is deceiving. The price is $250, but that does not include the flywheel or 180 degree header. (According to Tower Hobbies.) I find it hard to believe that o.s. does this as their old engines were not that way. If so, I can get a MAC 45 for just $60 more than the complete o.s. engine. I'm assuming the MAC comes with the flywheel and header.

Can anyone confirm that the o.s. 46 does not include the flywheel and header??

Thanks.

If you can get a mac engine it's a no brainer as the mac is far better for power and toughness ex will be correct also, but they do like 50 - 60% nitro, also they have a needle bearing on the con rod so maint. is a must.

Well, I bought a NIB O.S. 46vx-m for $190 on e-bay, so I'll keep you posted on how the installation goes. I'll probably offset the engine a little and use a fabbed 1-piece plate aluminum engine mount to support the engine case better. This should reduce the chance of any cracking.
