Elmira got hit pretty hard late yesterday with storms/tornado. Looks like considerable damage via the web. Wonder how many of the old trees went down at the pond.

Sunday is good for me. As today looks like a washout. The rain is good as the farmers need it. Some of the corn fields looks good and some don't I redone all my setup on the gas vee . ,strut angle ,trim tabs. Not much- it needed something. I also filed down the stakes forward of CoG just took off the sharpness.

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Hi to all you CNY boaters. I'd like to invite anyone interested to contact me via email regarding a new place to race. I'm actually here in NY now but leaving for Florida in a couple of days. My family owns some property in Taberg which is just outside of Rome. We're in the process of redeveloping it and I'd love to get involved with boats on our 4 acre pond. I've been racing RC cars for 12 years and running a club in Florida for 10 of those. Starting next year I'll become a true snowbird with plans to spend as many as 8 months of the year in NY.
If you're a CNY RC boater and would be interested in a new racing location, please get in touch via [email protected]. Everybody calls me Dino. If you're a local and might like to visit the property over this summer, please let me know. I can let my parents know you'll be visiting. The property is still a working rental housing area so it's best to contact me before showing up unexpectedly.
Really looking forward to starting a full fledged rc boating facility. The property is just way to nice to not use as a recreation area. RV and camping sites won't be a problem and access is very easy. We're on Old Coal Hill Rd. if you look it up on Google Earth.
Look forward to hearing from you and learning all I can about RC boating.
Take Care, Dino

I checked out your pond on Google Earth. The one that I looked at was only 400 feet long and 260 feet at the widest point. The south end narrowed pretty good. That works out to about 2 acres. Is this the pond you are talking about? The image was dated 7/21/11.

Yes, we have some drivers in your area.Dino
A nice pond. Dick & Ric Thompson live in Utica. They do go to Hinkley Res but they have to share the launch area with real boaters.

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Thanks for the replies Gents. Craig, you are correct. I quoted an incorrect figure. That said, the pond size will increase. We plan on digging out the side closest to my Brothers rental home. You can actually see where the previous owner built a small wall of concrete blocks. That will be the new waters edge. Where the new road is being built will be another change as we clear that.
So now the obvious question. Is the pond to small for any serious rc boating activities ?
I've been in touch with Mr. Thompson already and invited him to visit. I got his name from a local hobby shop. Turns out we're not to far apart in Florida either so I'm sure I'll see him there also.
Thanks again for the welcome. No matter what, I plan on getting involved with rc boating and look forward to meeting some of you as soon as possible. 3am flight out so I'll say so long till tomorrow evening. Have Fun All !!

My Feedback: (1)
RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Dino,
The ideal pond size is 600x300, or about 5 acres if it is oval. We usually look for a 6 acre pond as most are not perfectly oval or rectangular.
Figure that the course (lane 1) is 330 by 70, so if only one boat was running you could use a pond that was about 420 by 120 feet.
As you add lanes, the pond must get bigger.
Figure 50 to 70 feet for "lanes". That adds 100 to 140 feet to the 70 foot course (170 to 210 feet wide and 430 to 470 feet long).
Move this 50 feet from shore and you have about 600 by 300 feet.
If you never intend for more than one or two boats at a time, you can get by with much less.
BTW: I am in Utica, so Taberg would be very close (30 miles +-)...

Joe is correct on the pond size, but I would shoot for a little over 600 feet. When racing, it's easy to go long.... I hope to hit 700 feet long at some point in time, but not this fall. I am concentrating on width first. When enlarging your pond don't worry about depth too much, I'm only going three feet deep on the new parts. As long as you have spots that are 8+ feet deep fish will survive winters just fine. People say you will have weeds in the shallow area, but I get weeds in the deep areas too. Triploid grass carp and dyes are what is legal for weed control in NY.
