Default BIG UGLY STICK AND DLE 20

Well I have been out of RC for about 25yrs and when I read about the 2.4 systems I figured it was time to get back in. LUCKY I still had some of my planes. This Stick is the last thing I was building when I stopped flying. I sold some of old engines and radios and purchased a Futaba 10c and of course a DLE 20. While I was finishing my Stick and my first attempt with gas I was getting my wings back flying a 4 Star 40 with a OS 46AX. Well I finished he stick and it fly's great. I found out one day when was flying the 4Star and just breaking in the DLE20. I decided to taxi around. RIGHT I didn't even get to half throttle when a bump got me airborne. It was climbing so good that I said "what the heck" and just flew around a little. After trimming out I did some low passes. I had programed Flaperons so I tried them too. It flies so slow yo can walk faster.

There are a few modification made to the STICK

1. Larger control surfaces (aileron and elevator)

2. Servo trays taken out to make room for fuel tank and radio RX

3. Added another firewall behind the original one and put wooded dowel pins in

4. Extended landing gear down and larger wheels for prop clearance

5. Beefed up landing gear (welded angles on bottom of gear)

I am using a APS 14x10 and a 15X8 and the vertical is unbelievable. RPM 8900 and pulls 13 to 14 pounds of thrust. I can't hover too good YET but I had a guy at the field try, who flies a YAK with a DA 170, and it looked easy. It almost flies too fast at half throttle and the snaps and flat spins will scar you the first few times.

Here are a few pictures

A 10oz tank will fly 42 minutes, which is normally a long time on other glow engines

If the landing gear work out I will clean it up and shine it to match the True Turn Spinner.

What wing span is your stick. I have a Ultra stick that I have been thinking of using a DLE 20 on

The wing was cut down to 61inches when I took the ends off and made side forse wingtips instead. There is a lot more responce to ailerons. That is the last picture on the original post.

The mod to the landing gear looks to be adding lots of weight???

that is very thin aluminum angle and it only weighs 1.6oz and less than 1/2oz of welding rod. Thats about 2oz just in front of CG and was not noticed in flight.

Ihave the older hangar 9 ultra big stick and it flies great with the DLE20 and a 15x8 k series prop. Going to try a 14 x 10 tomorrow. A little under powered for any 3d flying I think but I'm not thatkindof a pilot yet. Still working on it. Short take offs and pulls out of anything I've encountered.

One of our club members has a Big Stick 60 with a Zenoah 20 on it and it is a great combo. I know the DLE20/60Stick would fly even better as the 20 is as powerful and is lighter.

I like the idea of a DLE 20 and a Big Stik .60 I think that would be a fine first step in gas engines.

For those who have already done that, I am curious about the installation. You would use stand-offs between the firewall and the engine, I guess. The ignition system for the DLE would go where the fuel tank is normally located and the tank would be moved back to the radio/servo compartment? The throttle pushrod puzzles me though. How would that be done? Is it practical to relocate the exlisting pushrod that far over to the centerline?

Could one of you folks who have already done all this pass along a run-down on how its done in detail? Any pictures would help a relatve newcomer as well, if thats possible.

How did you do it? Thanks. Mike.

If you go with the World Models Super Stunt 60 (80 inch wingspan) no mods neeed for installing DLE20, other than beefing up fire wall. Comes setup with flaps to!

Well I've been flyin her for over a year now and it just keeps gettin better. After playing witht he radio, Futaba 10c, I can do all kinds of tricks. This combo is just a great flyer and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to have fun. I have even flown AMMAC type stuff with ease. Its just not big enough to enter contest.
