Default Jett or Novarossi for speed

Hello I am new to this forum. I currently have a OS .46FX with the jettstream muffler.

Would like to make the plane quicker and was looking at either the Jett .46/.50 or the Novarassi R.46/.57CR engines. This is strictly for sport flying not racing, and am looking at best straight and level speed (within a reasonable price of course). Seems like Jett is the way to go and I like they are American made with excellent customer service, however I see Novarassi has recently revamped themselves in the past year and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this engine?

I find the rossi manual difficult to understand, and it appears it cannot burn any of the commercial fuels like Omega 15% which the Jett can. Am I reading this correctly? Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I currently race a couple of warbirds equipped with Rossi engines and am very happy with them. You may be a little confused about the fuel. They are set up for low nitro ( High compression ) so any fuel with 5% nitro and at least 18% oil will work. I actually buy fuel with 18% synthetic and then add a couple oz of castor. My .61 FIRE is an animal and spins an APC 11X11. I have reworked them to run 15% nitro though. It was only good for a couple hunderd RPM.

Rossi (AXE) and NovaRossi (REX) are two different manufacturers. The NovaRossi will run just fine on 15% Nitro. I had the older NovaRossi C60F that ran extreamly well on 10%. Easy to start and tune. The NovaRossi (REX) CR46/57 are timed for 3D so I wouldn't expect them to work well in a speed application.

Rossi are out of box set up for 0-5% nitro. You can run more nitro with the addition of a head shim.

The Rossi (AXE) .53 5 Port or the Jett .50 would be my choice for all out speed in a sport plane. The Rossi will outperfom the Jett and do it on 5% Nitro. The Jett has the best carburator on the market.

NovaRossi (REX) engines are sold through www.planethobby.com
Rossi (AXE) engines are sold through www.rossienginesusa.com

adding one thin and one thick head shim will make the rossi run very well on the 15 percent fuel, using two of the thick shims allows 25-30 percent, this also applies to the novarossi engines as well, the heli guys run them on 30 percent nitro heli fuel, using thick shims. using a colder plugs is advised as well when running 15-30 percent fuel, if you contact planethobby they can tell which shims to order, if you dont have them. the heli guys run them at at 18-20k rpm2, and they run and live quite well.

The head shims are an easy way to get the Rossi to run higher nitro but you will loose some top end power going that way. The idea is to reduce compression slightly while maintaining the stock squish band. What I did was open up the combustion chamber a little so no shims were needed. Rossies have the unique head button that makes some playing around with mods easy and inexpensive. I'm still toying with head work and different pipes. My goal is spinning an APC 12X12N at 14K or better.

Thanks for all the info.  I was not aware the Novarossi and Rossi are two separate manufacturers.  For some reason I thought Rossi stopped making engines years ago and Novarossi was some sort of new startup based off Rossi.   Good to know........

Hi!
If you want high speed JETT are better than Nova Rossi or Rossi.

I would go with a Jett 56 and it will give you way more power than any of those rossi engines. I will say it has more power than a rossi C60..........

The Jett 56 should spin a APC 10x6 prop at around 18,000 rpm and a APC 9x8 at 18,500 once broken in.

Not too sure about this myself. Raptor, you know I am a Rossi fan. The Rossi develops it's power at a lower RPM. This is why my .61 Fire engine is able to turn an APC 11X11. Now look at the prop recomendations taked from the Jett web site:

PROP SELECTION: Piped engines are much more sensitive to prop selection than you have been used to; therefore the wrong prop can cause many symptoms which lead you to believe you have other problems. These engines are timed and piped for at least 16500 RPM (15000 for the .60L) If you run a prop that does not turn at least 16500 (15000 for the .60) at peak, you will not get optimum flight performance, and will experience some overheating problems. We have found that a typical 10x6 prop will turn all the way from 15000 to 17000, so a little experimentation is in order. You will find that your transition from idle and mid-range is improved greatly as the engine RPMs are increased. If the engine is slow to pipe up, or falls off too readily, try 500 more ground RPMs.

We have test run and flown the new Bolly 10.5" x 5 and 10.5" x 6 props. They perform really well. Try the 10.5 x 5. For the .60L the APC 11x5, Bolly 10.6 x 6 seem to be good.

While the Jett engines reach their power at a higher RPM it does so with a much smaller prop. This leads me to beleive that the engine choice really depends on how clean the airplane is. A 16,000 RPM10X6 is not going to be much good on a draggy airplane. I know your not a fan of the speed calculators and neither am I but just for grins do the calc on a 16,000 RPM 10X6 VS. a 13,000 RPM 11X11. I think the Rossi is going to be the winner.

lol i meant the 57 not sure what i was thinking lol. the Rossi C60 though is about 5-6 ounces more in weight.

For the 45 case size engine you cant beat the Jett 56 and a 9x8 prop

It may be just that you want the hottest engine you can get without going bigger, but if it's just about speed in a sport plane why not just go up to a standard sport type .60? You won't turn any more rpms (assuming you're optimized already with the engine you have now), but you can turn more prop pitch which is nearly as good. For what a Jett will cost you could have two OS .61's or three Thunder Tigers. If you're looking to keep the weight down, a Super Tigre .51 is ported toward the higher rpm range as well.

Come to think of it with just sport flying like I do a bigger engine with a larger prop pitch like a .65AX might be a good way to go. I like to be careful about noise and the lower RPM's with higher pitch would help out with that bigtime. Thanks for input.

Oh no argument here about Jett. They are top shelf for sure. It's just not necessary for a guy who isn't looking to save every ounce he can to spend the money on a Jett just to get some more oomph in a .40 size plane.
