To cowl or not to cowl
I recent acquired a new Joss Stik (balsa covered foam wing version) at a club auction. It has a new 90 como (super tiger). I plan to use a 14x6 prop.
This looks to be a very sturdy plane with a plywood and fully sheeted balsa fuselage. This sport plane could survive my rough landings.
I was thinking of making it a little more Eindecker looking by adding a cowl.
This could be made out a small aluminum sauce pan or even a clorax bleach bottle with some fiber glass reinforcing. I was concerned that the
proposed cowl might restrict the thrust generated from the prop. The Stik's fire wall measure 4"x4" and the proposed cowl will be about 6" in dia. The front of the cowl
will be pretty open to allow air to pass thru and it will attached to the fire wall with some aluminum angle brackets. So, would the cowl greatly reduce performance?
