New to sticks!

Well, I just started getting back into flying and I stopped over to a friend's house after flying because he had an engine for me. Well, before I left, he says, "can you cover?" "Yup!" I said. To which he replied, "here, take this stick and re-cover it! You can have it!" So, now I'm the proud owner of a Hangar 9 Ultra Stick 40. I built some different ailerons for it, as I don't use flaps, and I re-covered it. I figured that I'd put that engine I got from him on the plane but since it's a .91 O.S. 4-stroke, I also shortened the fuse a little from the firewall side. I needed to do a little work up on that end anyways. Figured moving the engine back about 1.5 inches couldn't hurt. I needed to raise the landing gear and put larger wheels on it too so the 14x6 MAS prop doesn't hit the ground. Here's a couple of quick photos of it. I have yet to maiden it. Hopefully soon. Also, here is a quick video of firing the engine.

nice job crafty. If the landing gear is too high, you could put a smaller diameter 3 blade prop since you have a big engine with power to spare.

My latest Stik is an experiment with high power. It is a Great Planes Stik 60 with a 1.20AX on it.

I shortened the nose, converted it to a tail dragger and re-enforced the wing root.

I don't recall right now. I built it a year ago and it hasn't flown due to our lives being turned upside down this time last year when our city was evacuated. I tend to set them at the factory CG for the maiden so I would say that is where it is. The reason I moved the firewall back as soon as I started to build it was to prepare for the extra weight on the nose.

I went back to where I had posted the build on FB. The final weight came in at 7 lb 10 oz. Balance point is at the factory recommended CG. I mounted the battery in the rear fuselage just behind the wing.

Default Largest gas engine

I have a stick with a 75 inch wing not sure of the make of the model what's the largest gas engine I should put on It? I currently have a satio fa 80 on it...needs more power.

Sounds like you could easily put a 1.20 glow engine, or a 20cc gas rig on it... maybe a tad bigger if you have some experience with them... With that said, I might even go to a 30cc gas engine... That would definitely give your plane some serious power... I would say the safest bet would be a 20cc gasser, and you would see a substantial increase in power. There's several glow engines in the 1.20 range in the classifieds lately as well... a 1.20 glow engine would also increase performance drastically... It depends on your skill level and how you want to approach it though.

I have the Great Planes Stik 60, it has a 66.5" span. I have an OS .95 four-stroke and it's a fire-breather... prior to that I had a 1.10 four-stroke, and it was incredible... so.. .yeah.. you need a bigger engine for sure. Good luck.

tcby, what is the weight of your plane? I would think that a 20cc would be great on it. The stiks that use 30cc planes are usually around 80 inch wingspan and built like tanks (Great Planes Giant Big Stik) or the newer Hangar 9 Ultra Stick 30cc. Those planes weigh around 13 to 16 pounds.

Anybody getting the new Great Planes Giant Big Stik XL? I would love to have one but I can't carry something that big through my basement stairway!!!

I have an old beater truck with an 8 foot bed and a cap on it, so no transportation limits. Only house limits. But I am hoping somebody will post their experience with it here so we can all marvel and rave about it.

I guess you could modify the wing to be multi-piece if the fuselage would make it thru the stairwell?

The wings would be ok being 2-piece, but the fuselage is the constraint. I have a Hangar 9 Ultra Stik 30cc and it takes some maneuvering to pass the fuselage through the stairway and back door. Regardless, I am content with the H9 30cc Stik, I don't NEED another monster.

Well I have my 30 cc US dialed in and find it to have two minor shortcomings, it is not as agile as my 120 size US lite with a VVRC 20. The 30 cc is powered by a DLE 35 ra and has more power for it's weight.
The 30 is covered with the worst colors for good vis. Two at our field have added Orange strips on the leading edge. It looks tacky in my opinion but may be necessary as I got into S..t because of it the other day, hard to determine direction briefly. Recovered the plane after a little luck and "Trick" flying. Make no mistake both a good fun planes.......

Hey guys count me in the Stik Brotherhood. I have a 30 year old Midwest Sweet Stik 40 with a K&B 60. Great airplane to fly. I have the ailerons so sensitive that you'll do 3 barrel rolls before you know it. I can come off the runway and go vertical til it's out of sight. When I get back on my feet I'll post a pic of it. I also have a Bud Nosen Big Stik in the wings waiting to be built. I plan to use at least a 40CC on it.

I can't help but wonder if Phil Kraft would be surprised that his greatest legacy is the popularity of his test bed airplane?

The demise of one of my Sticks at a club pylon race.
Mine is the red one (seen in my previous posts wearing an RCV 90) which sheds it's wing and exits left.
Was 15 years old with over a thousand flights on her. A fitting death for an old warrior!
We were clocked with a radar gun at 212kph ( 132mph) in the previous race.
