No it was not a Spectrum radio...it was a Airtronics 10G. I bought the radio new when they first came out years ago...and Airtronics had some of them with a bad mother board or brain. When I contacted Airtronics they told me there was a recall on the radio's but if you were out of warrantee they didn't contact you. That to me was not cool at all...and I lost three good planes because of this issue. I have been flying Airtronics since the late 80's and loved the radio's and servo's I used...but this kind of upset the apple court with me. I needed radio's with more then ten channels and ended up going with Spectrum. I have a brand new Spectrum 20 channel radio, I just got in...and I sold my Spectrum 7S and 18 channel radio's. But my new 20 channel has an issue I just got in this week and may need to send it in. The screen is so light I can hardly see it. So unless there is a fix in the manual I have here...It will go back too.
I have flown my Airtronics 10G for years after the fix with out an issue...and fly all my current planes on it. I needed the 20 channel Spectrum for my Giant Twin Ugly Stick build from an AMR kit. I needed the extra channels for engine start (electric start engines), twin Sync and camera's.

Built a 60 size Ugly Stick years ago from a kit. Midwest? Flew well even though the wood was the heaviest, strongest wood I've ever seen in a kit. Built a Sweet Stick years ago. It flew well. Guy gave me a 20 size trainer that looked like a Stick except for the vertical tail. So I modified the tail. Now it looks like an Ugly Stick and flys well. Rebuilt a Super Stunts ARF that a guy crashed. You know what it looks like, and yes, it flys well. Can I count a Balsa USA Swizzle Stick? It flew well, even with a second pusher engine mounted behind the center of the (high) wing.
Now, to get off the subject. I love how easy it is to program my Airtronics radios. But I'll be darned if I'd buy another, even if I could, for the reasons listed in the previous letters. Maybe Mr. Bob Paris should let us know which brand of radio he is buying, as a public service. (Spektrum owner here)

I fixed the screen on my 20 channel Spectrum and its now dark enough to read properly. I called Horizon and was shown how to darken or lighten it at will. I will keep my Airtronics 10G and fly all my smaller models on it. I will use my Spectrum on my larger models that need the versatility of the Spectrum system. Yes...Airtronics radio's are easy to set up and my RDS 8000 is the most simple to set up of all. Yep...I have a Airtronics RDS 8000 and I have never had an issue with this radio. I started out with a Kraft Series 69, then a KP7C and then purchased a Signature Kraft radio in 1981. It was the best radio I ever had...and I was a Kraft man until it was purchased was phased out after Phill Kraft passed away. I flew Kraft from the last 60's to the late 80's. Airtronics until the last couple of years when I am beginning to move over to Spectrum. I will keep using Airtronics until I am no longer able to get them serviced or they go out of business.

Very interesting. A little less expensive that the Great Planes Giant Stik., with more features (e.g. flaps, optional float kit, and option for electrical power setup.)

I have had both the Big Sticks and the Hanger 9 built Ultra Sticks. By far at the older Ultra Sticks were better built ARF models then the newer Big Sticks today. I am now looking into the new Ulta Strik 30cc model myself. I have back ordered the 30cc Big Stick ARF...but now I will cancel the back order and order the newer Ultra Stick.
I am currently building an AMR Twin Ugly Stick...and that kit cost nearly $850.00 delivered to Hawaii. It is a U-build kit...not an ARF either. The ARM 30cc Ugly Kit cost $499.99 + shipping from Canada and you still have to build the kit-figure at least $100.00 more to finish the model and up, and you still need to add an engine and radio gear. It used to be you could build just about any U-build kit substantially cheaper then an ARF. No longer.
You may come across a U-build Birdy Big Stick cheap...but hardly show up any more. Midwest kitted many Ugly Stick models over the years...but I have only one lift...a Bi-plane Stick. Dick Jensen had a nice .60 size Ugly Stick kit...but the wing had dihedral. Larry Lenard had a little stick kit and I built at least a dozen...and powered them with S.T. .23's, K&B .40's and one a O.S. Wankel. All the rest I have built are no longer with the living. I do have a large collection of kits...so I assemble an ARF...and I will always build up a U-built kit next. This way I keep my building skills intact and have a different model on the flying field then most guys in our club.
To me...you assemble an ARF...and you build a kit...big difference. Now I have taken ARF's and have done major surgery to the ARF. I bought a Chinese 90" P-38...stripped if of its covering. Added full wing flaps...installed retracts (it had no provisions for retracts only fixed gear), recovered, 3/4 oz/sq. ft cloth and fiberglassed-covering the engine pods and pilot pod, made a scale nose piece (the kit supplied fiberglassed nose cone was so unscale...I made one out of balsa blocks [I came out tail heavy]), painted and Monikoted the wings, and modified the model to break apart with a removable stabilizer, engine pods, pilot pod and both wings split in two (I had to get it to the model field). That may be called an ARF...but I spent five months on the ARF to make it into something I wanted. At the time there were three P-38 ARF's on the market. VQ sold one, ESM sold one and the China made unit. The VQ went for nearly $6 bills, the ESM was even more expensive and the China ARF came to me for under $300.00 delivered to Hawaii. So I purchased the cheaper kit and ARF bashed the model. When you have a champaign palette on a beer budget...you got to do what you have to do, to have your dream.
I love building kits...and assembling ARF's. Both serve me and from what I see today...its a blessing. My only regret is...most your U-build kits are history...but I still find the hobby fascinating and fun.

Still Flying my US 120 w/vvrc 20cc for about the 6th year. Had to recover as the plane, obtained it nib, had been stored for a number of years in a Calif. Storage unit w/very high summer temps. Wonderful plane for the sports flier, the new ones will go fast!

I just pre-ordered my 30cc Ultra Stick and it comes with FREE SHIPPING ! That just saved me over $150.00 in shipping to Hawaii ! I am now going to cancel my back ordered Towers Big Stick 30 cc ARF. My last Ultra Stick was a .40 size Stick. I stuck a K&B .61 Twister on board...and flew that model for three years. I actually wore out on .61 and installed a new Super Tiger G90. I needed to break in the engine for a Top Flight kit built P-51B. I flew that model for seven years, until a wind sock poll jumped up and cut my wing into two pieces. To say the .40 size Ultra Stick was a bit over powered is an understatement...but my goodness...that model had a vertical presentation you had to see to believe. I love to fly Ugly Sticks because they handle wind and turbulence the best of any model I have ever flown...and where we fly...we get wild trade winds every day. So if your afraid to fly in 10~15 kt. winds...you will never fly at our field. With out a doubt, Ugly Sticks are the most predictable flying models in the take off and landing condition then any other model I have ever flown (Ok...maybe the Sr Falcon was as good). Ever once in a while we are blessed with a no wind day...but that is very unusual. Winds are always present in mid morning and one reason I always have a Ugly Stick model in my hanger. If nothing else...I will fly my Ugly Sticks.
I do have WWII gas engine fighters to fly...and I will fly them...depending on how strong the cross winds are. If the winds are shifting allot I will go to my Sticks to fly.
I have a VVRC twin cylinder 40 cc gas engine to go into this model and I have been itching to find am airframe to install it on....now I do.
No word when delivery from Horizon...but I will do the build here in this forum for all to see.

Good luck on your project. I have about all I can handle with the planes I have, might buy one a little later and stash it until I need it! My 120 size U/S is my go to when I just want to "Fly the heck" out of something!

Pros and Cons, I guess.
I obliterated my Great Planes Giant Big Stik this past summer due to a radio wiring failure in the plane (my fault). I salvaged all the gear except the throttle servo and need a new airframe.
Also, about to assemble a VMAR V-Stik 40 ARF with an OS 46SF and a Hobby King mini stik kit with a OS 15LA.
