Ultrasport 1000 on GAS?
I've got an old US1000 that is kind of in perma-refurb mode.
I used to have a YS 1.20 in it, but I'm trying to get away from glow power.
What are my options as far as GAS goes? Would a 25cc or 35cc engine get it done and still have enough power? Do you think it would fit?
Just trying to weigh my options here.
Electric maybe?

I agree. You would probably have to change to a longer landing gear for prop clearance and move the elevator servos to the tail to help with the balance. If you fly from grass, you may want to reinforce the main gear mounts to handle the stresses from the longer gear.

Funny, for some reason I hadn't thought about moving the servos to the tail. Since it's fully sheeted this should be a pretty simple mod. My biggest concern is the narrow front cowling, I will have trouble fitting the gasser in the spot that the YS used to live. I think I will need to install the engine first and see where the balance ends up with the servos in stock locations and then in the tail. The gear could be a problem, I have Spring Air retracts now and they are already setup, I was swinging a 16" prop for the YS I'll have to see what size prop I need for the gasser and then see what I have for clearance. I hadn't really thought of that problem yet.
Do you think a 35cc will be enough power for pattern type flying? I would want unlimited vertical obviously.
Good stuff to start with... this is getting better the more I think about it...

Horizon says the Evolution 35 will turn a 19x8 at 8200 and my thrust calculator says that works out to 25 pounds of static thrust. That should be more than enough.
FYI, the Evolution 26 is supposed to turn an 18x6 at 8700, which works out to 22.5 pounds of thrust. Still more than enough and you would have more ground clearance. Also the engine is smaller and lighter (always a good thing).

Here's an US 1000 with a MVVS 1.6 gas engine. http://moleski.net/rc/current.htm I think the Zenoah G-26 works out to a 1.55 c.i. engine.
No idea about unlimited vertical, but at 25,000 feet or so the air starts to thin out and they're too hard to see, anyway.

I've been looking at the BME SuperTigre .90 Conversion they are claiming 2.7HP which if I'm not mistaken is YS 1.40 type power and it's the same weight as the YS. (I may be wrong there someone please correct me if I am.)
I was also looking at the Evolution 26GT as mentioned, I think the 35 is too much as far as weight is concerned. (I'd probably get the MVVS version same as you to save a few $$)
The supertigre may fit in my existing cowling since I could leave it side mounted (like the YS was) and use a stock muffler. The Evo I was thinking of making a new cowling so I could mount it inverted and just running a pitts muffler, but maybe I could make a pipe work.
I definitely want to keep the retract/tail-dragger setup.
This is gonna be sweet...

Go to http://www.bmaps.net/ and click the "Goodies" tab. It is very interesting to see the differences between a large, low pitch prop and a smaller, high pitch prop on the same engine.
The ST 90 on glow is rated at 2.5 hp at 14,800 rpm, but in reality it will turn a 13x6 about 11,500, on a good day. (They have good days and bad days.) Using ThrustHP again, that is around 1.9 horsepower and 10.7 pounds of thrust. Simple physics will tell you that the gas version can never make more power than the glow version.
Never believe the horsepower ratings given by the manufacturers.

RCKen thanks for posting that. I'm debating if I want to convert my existing plane to GAS or just put the YS back in and build another 1000 and build it specifically for GAS... decisions, decisions.....
Right now I'm just a few servos and some covering and hinging away from having her in flyable condition again so I'm thinking go with the original setup and try to locate a kit cutter and build another!

I have a 1000 that I am putting a First place 40cc on. So far it looks like it's going to work out. I just need a nose cone so I can finnish shaping up the nose.

I have an old OS 120 Non-Surpass on my US 1000 and its tired. I was thinking of going to a YS 120, but I think gas would be a better choice.

I have a U.S. 1000 with a 2300 Super Tiger on glow and it performs great.
But my suggestion for a gasser is to convert an OS 160 to gas. I don't think you can find a lighter motor [42ozs.] in it's size range than this. Gas motors are getting better but there is too much give away in the weight and power area. I know the cost of glow has gone up but fuel is not your greatest cost.

Well, considering a gallon of glow is over $20 and gas is $4, thats not totally true.
Buy the engine once, and thats it.
fuel is a continuing expense, unless you never fly!

A little side bar question guys...... The plans of the Ultrasport 1000, could you "scratch" a plane off of those. Are all the pertinent info included on the plans. ie.. formers, fuse sides, wing ribs, or the profile of the rib at the root and tip etc, etc.

It depends on your source for the plans. If they are the set out of a Great Planes Ultra Sport 1000 kit then the answer is no, you won't be able to scratch a kit of it. They do not list all of the parts on the plans and you won't have what you need to cut everything. However, if you have a set of plans from RCM then you will be able to build a kit from those as they are builder's plans that have all the parts on them.

OK GUYS, I THINK I'VE FIGURED OUT THE UPLOAD. ANYWAYS HERES SOME PICS OF ENGINE INSTALLED , HOPE TO FINISH GLASSING RETRACT INSTALL AREA THIS WEEK. what do you guys think about putting one of those RotoMotor 35cc four stroke gasoline engines on an ultrasport 1000. I like the looks of those motors but im not sure if it would fit or if it would be to heavy for this plane. I dont do pattern, I just sport fly.
