Tom,

For the Ultra Stick lite 120 that is a recommended engine. There is a huge thread on RCU about that plane and engine combo

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_16...tm.htm#1607130

That's going to be my next setup. I have my second G26 converted by RC going into a GP Stearman and just ordered my 3rd conversion for the USL 120

The new GP Matt Chapmann CAP580 quickly became my favorite plane ever flown within 2 flights. One of the best tumblers I have ever had also!

I might add that depfife's plane was a feature in a short article in R/C reports magazine last year saying the same things that depfife has said.

This type plane came in a variety of names like the RCM trainer 60 with construction articles at two different times, years apart, at least three Bridi versions with different length wings and tail positions and then as the GP trainer 60 in two different versions. Joe Bridi was the original designer.

There's a GP Trainer 60 at the flying field at my home with a ASP 61

They can be a favorite plane even built as originally intended with a normal engine on it.

it's nice

I just loved my little Great Planes Trainer .40 . It was labeled as a Trainer, but it was just as agile alot of Sport Planes. A real fun, and fast flyer! A wing mount broke on it while about 200 ft up. The wing seperated from the fuse, and the fuse went in like a rocket while the wing just fluttered down to the earth. I sure hated to see that one go. I had rebuilt it several times due to other mishaps, but the last time it was just to far gone. The GP Trainer 40 and 60 had much more gusto than just about any Trainer you might find today in my opinion. I wished they still produced the kits!

I fly an old pattern plane called the Daddy Rabbit. It has an OS 91 4-stroke and it just a blast to fly.
It goes where you point it, but can land on a dime.

Since I don't race, or compete in any other way, I consider all my planes to be "sport planes". If favorite is determined by the one that gets the most flights then my favorite is a WM Aircombat Zero. It's not the prettiest, in fact, I usually call it my ugly green plane or my "beater plane". It's not at all scale, if it weren't for the circles on the wing, there would be no way to know it's supposed to be a zero. It is a good flying plane with a reliable engine, OS .32 FSR. When I haven't flown for a few weeks, this is the plane that goes up first.

The pic below is my current flyable fleet, I should be adding a Tower Uproar within the next day or two. Clockwise from front WM .45 P-51 Miss America, Pilot HydeAway .10, WM Aircombat Zero, Modeltech Extra 300.

Well, back in the day my favorite was Goldberg Falcon 56...learned to fly with it and it was my everyday flyer for a long time...these days my two favorites are a GP Easy Sport (now deceased but what a fun flyer she was), my new Dazzler built from a kit and my newest bird a SPAD (hope that doesn't offend anyone) which I call the Firebird. The firebird has a 20 oz/sf wing loading and is pretty tough.....

You can take that SPAD and.... go fly it. I don't have to agree with your choices and you don't have to agree with mine. If you're having fun, you're doing it right.

I mess around sport flying with my 15 year old F-14 TAMEcat.

Kitted and built using AMA plans #654, it's a rugged design by Jeff Troy. I eventually replaced the ASP 2-stroke .46 with an OS .61 and got the improved performance I wanted plus some.

It's a F-U-N airplane!!! Equipped with working navigation lights, with the other accessories, the 'Pilot' can drop bombs and, on command, fire 2 'rockets' each of the 3 possible salvos. 'Rockets' are modified plastic-cased Whistling Bottle Rockets w/ Reports fired with a servo actuated electro-mechanical firing circuit.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...I know about AMA GSR #8...so, spare everyone the AMA 'blah-blah-blah lectures', please - Thank you, in advance. I don't fly at AMA sanctioned fields when I'm in the mood to fire 'rockets'...unless there's a lot of begging...

BTW - Altech Marketing came out with an ARF/ARC version of this plane a year or 3 after Jeff Troy's construction article first appeared in the June 1990 issue of AMA's Model Aviation magazine. I have read a lot of less-than-favorable comments about that Altech ARF/ARC version of Jeff Troy's F-14 TAMEcat and it's long been out-of-production but can still be found. If you want to build this unusual looking 'Trainer', I recommend going the same route I did - purchase the plans and have it kitted.

Whoa guys! That was a joke! (Smiley added. I guess that does help.) "go fly it" was intended to mean "take it out to the field and have fun with it"

Wynterhawk said "my newest bird a SPAD (hope that doesn't offend anyone)" I was just trying to say that as a sport flyer, you never have to apologize for your choices. Some people don't like SPADs but so what, if it works for you, that's great. I thought "If you're having fun, you're doing it right." was pretty clear but I guess nobody got that far.

I didn't intend to offend anybody, but if I did I apologize. Now can we all be friends?

Over in the UK the generally acepted best sports plane is the Chris Foss designed Wot4. It has to be just about the longest running kit available - well over 20 years old now. The basic design has been updated several times and we are now on the Mk III - one well sorted machine!

cool dude, just when someone says 'take it and...', well it aint something I hear as a joke much. All better.

Zippo, my dad bought a 2nd hand Uno Wot, and stuck a TT42 on the front, and its SOOOOO much fun, if it weren't for the dihedral and ridiculous fin area it would be a great sport flyer, just had it on floats last year. Proper trainer. [8D]

For many years I've extolled the virtues of an ARF 60 size Ugly Stik by "Long Ti Shin". Used to get it from Doug's Hobby Shop in Maryland, I think. Haven't seen one advertised in years now so I don't know how I could replace it. Lately though, I have been flying a Conquest VI pattern plane and LOVING it. No, I'm not a pattern competitor, but enjoy this plane for it's smooth, graceful maneuvers with a YS91AC. So far, its' glass fuse, retracts and foam wing are tough. 1 off-runway landing deadstick with the gear in the wells, no damage. I'm hooked on pattern planes nowdays! Would love to try Sportsman level Pattern if work woul let me have weekends off to go to contests, but...

All these are great airplanes...besides the GP Super Sportster 40 (with OS .46AX) that I fly regularly and really love, I'd have to add the Gee Bee Dreamer Bipe to the list. This kit has been around forever. It really rolls great, even with ailerons on the bottom wing only. Simple to build and with a short 38" WS, it is easy to leave around the hangar fully assembled. The only downside I can think of is that the tail is a bit weak. Build it with braces and its great. Don't ask me how I know this...

724SP,
Thanks. After you get your idea built please post some pictures!

It really is a great flying plane. My wife hates the colors but they are really easy to see in the air.

Does any one miss their Lazy Bee? I had one years ago that was great fun to fly, straight and level inverted was always good for a cheer.

Endeavor,

NICE TameCat, dude. I've always liked that design. I looked hard at the ARC, but it was very poorly executed IMO. I knew that when I got a hernia picking up the box, things wouldn't be good...

Do you remember who cut your kit? If they still have the templates, that would save me a set-up charge. In your opinion, how would the design take to a mid-size four stroke, like a Saito 72/82 or OS 70 Surpass?

I saw an article some years back by a fellow who modified and fitted retracts to a MidWest Aero Star (high wing) model. They folded forward into the fuselage a'la full-size Cessna 210. That concept would work great on the TameCat.

Hmmmm......

Endeavor105 - I love that Tamecat!! Any chance on getting a copy of your plans? AMA does not list that model anymore and to tell you the truth I am thinking of building it as a SPAD...I love the twin tail! Or does anyone have an idea where to get a set of plans??
