Default Best engine for 4* .40

I'm currently building a .40 4* from kit (first attempt @ kit building) and would appreciate some advice on what would be the best engine for this plane. I'm currently flying a Nexstar with an OS .46fxi installed. This plane has been a great trainer that I soloed in and have been using it to build additional flying skills. This engine has worked well, although I'm constantly having to adjust mixture. This may be normal in all engines but as a newbie I find it to be a pain that takes away from the overall flying experience.

I'm planning on keeping the Nexstar so I need another engine. A logical engine for the 4* would be an OS . 46AXL but I'm wondering if another engine will work just as well and would be less expensive. Also reliability and access to parts is another factor.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Seeing that you have an OS 46 and that would be a good engine for that plane, I would suggest possibly staying with that eng. You know how it works so you don't have something else to learn. If you don't mind spending a few extra bucks, an OS 52 4c would be a great engine for that plane.
Now to your comment about adjusting the 46 all the time: You shouldn't have to mess with it much once it is set, I very seldom have to adjust, in fact I hate to see people PLAYING with their adjustments just to be doing it. If you are having a problem in that area, try flushing the system and then adjusting. Once its adjusted you should be good to go. ENJOY !!! RED

A 4*40 flies well with anything from an OS 46 LA, up to something like an OS 50 SX. Don't put a heavy engine (like a 61) in it. A good .46 -- like your .46 FXi, is a very good choice. You can put more motor into the Nexstar (with a few mods it handles a .61 rather well).

Quite a few clubs in our area have club races using stock 4 stars and super tiger 40's, and the move right along quite well. Personally I have a TT pro 46 on mine and it flies very well. I did have a Magnum .52 four stroke on it, flew well on that to but the engine was very finnicky

I will second the Thunder Tiger .46 Pro This is a very reliable engine and is not expensive. Tower has these for 79.99 and Thunder Tiger warrants them for 3 years. I have 2 of them with over 200 flights on them and have never had a problem. Just ordered a .61 TT to go in my Great Planes Ultimate 40.

Great Engines:
Good power!
Starts easy!
Sets easy!
Great price!

I flew my fourstar with a Fox .50. A pretty hefty lump of a motor but plenty of torque. It had a super quiet tuned muffler. I mounted the engine as low in the fuselage as the engine mount would allow to get the carburettor jet closer to being even with the centerline of the tank. I would bet that anything from a .40 to a .50 will fly the plane just fine. I have seen four star fortys flown with .60's but it would be serious overkill for a second or third model. The four star is a great plane in stock form. My only complaint is that the landing gear mount could benefit from a little reinforcement. I skimmed the gear off my 4 star 40 and 4 star 60.

I'd like to chime in here with 2 other choices. I've had great luck with a Magnum XLS-46 (an OS 46FX Clone). Just make sure you check the seals around the remote needle valve and carb intake. Very good engine so far. And also look at the OS 40FX. I didn't think this would be as powerful as my 46FX's, but was I surprised with what it can do with my Graduate. Anything above 1/2 throttle and it is a wildcat! On the other hand, the 46LA I have on my Pete and Poke is an absolute dog! I'm going to change it around with the 46FX I have on my Avistar when I finish training. Good luck and happy flying!

Super Tigre .51 Baby!!! Very Big bang for your buck. Most hobby shops and Tower are selling them under $80.00.

Saito .56-.72 would be nice for 4cycles.

The 4-Star 40 will fly with most any 40 size engine. There's nothing wrong with the engine you already have.

I like four stokes and one in the 50 - 61 size would be great on this plane. It is setup great for a four stroke.

Enjoy,

Jim

I was flying mine this morning, it has an OS 52 4-stroke with a 12/5 prop. If I could only have one rc plane and engine combo for the rest of my life- this would be it! Yes this plane is that sweet. Have fun with yours.

The Magnum .52 is a good strong motor. It does take a little longer to break it in, and does require a little more fine tuning to get it running perfectly, but when you do get it set up right, it's a screamer. And for $10 more than an OS 46LA it's a great buy.

I run my 4* .40 with a super tiger 40. I love how it flies and think it has plenty of power. In fact, I fly this plane everytime I go out flying. That being said, I think a .46FX would really make her zip along. Go ahead and drop that in her, I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

Thanks for your compliments. The yellow wings are easy to see in the air, but the silver fuselage can be hard to see in certain sky conditions so be advised. I think it would be cool looking with a blue fuse with yellow wings kind of a pt-19 look a like.

I'm flying my 4* 40 with a ENYA .45 on it. The wing is clipped 6in and the tail control surface's are about 3 times the size they are supposed to be. The tail remind's me of a Ultimate. Beleive it or not the guy who had it before me had some sort of 90 4 stroke on it. This plane is nuts with the ENYA. Definetly will keep you on your toes

Nice looking four star 40, try a apc 12 1/4 X 3 3/4 , we have several Magnum and ASP 52 4strokes at our field, great trouble free and running engines.. and the 12-5 was the best prop combination till one of us tried the apc, it is amazing, slows in the downline and gives more pulling power in uplines..
