Nice plane.
What engine do you use?

I bought a SS 90-1.20 at a hobby show in Feb. I got it with a OS 1.20 (old school four Stroke) it had no compression. I took the valve cover off and it had fuel gunked up in it. I cleaned it out with Alcohol and the stuck valve started working again. The Compression magically came back. I got the whole schmue for 60.00 I've ripped off all the painted covering and I'm in the process of recovering it now. I'm new to RC after 10yrs of layoff. I have a trainer and have my feet kinda back under me.

The real bummer is I knocked the motor off the bench and broke the carb body. anyone have a Carb for the OLD FS120 O.S.? If it works out that the motor is shot, I'm thinking of using a YS engine. My question is the motor mount is aluminum and is drilled for the OS FS120, will the YS 1.20, 1.40, 1.60 use the same mounting holes or are they different? Will the rails be too wide/narrow for the YS engine? If so I would not hassle with changing the engine mount out due to the way it is in the plane currently.

I really am looking forward to flying it. It is going to be my second plane. I plan on having an experienced pilot on a buddy box with me on the first flight to make sure all goes well.

If Tower can't get you a carb, check the size of the Magnum 120 carb. It might fit. Call Conley and see it he can give you a Perry carb for it. (Google Perry carburetors). If nothing else works try Randy at K&B. He collects old engine parts.

Oh yeah, and don't run caster oil in that engine. You have already seen what that will do to a four-stroke.

Try Ryan at Anchorage House of Hobbys in Anchorage Alaska, sorry I don't have the #. If you know the carb P/N he my be able to find one in his masive stash of old parts....JW

I just bought 90/120 Sportster and putting OS120 in it. I've only been in hobby about a year;anyone able to tell me CG and throws to set up this plane??? THANKS,Ressie

Brand new Super Sportster kit from Tower Hobbies.

Just got my brand new SS 40 kit from tower. And the 60 size should be coming next month. Check with Tower for your GP Super Sportster needs!

Now where's my CA at.........

I recived my Sportster .60 kit from Tower today! It looks pretty much the same as the one I built 10 years ago except that the box is white instead of blue. The quality of materials is typical GP, the wood is a little hard and fuzzy but not bad. I think this might be my next project after I finish my current GMP Sunbird build. I have an OS .91 FS that needs a home!!

My 2 Super Sportster 90/120's I built from kit, my Super Sportster 40 ARF, and my new Super Sportster Giant ARF. They all are great flyers, and I will always have at least one Super Sportster in the fleet.

Hi I have a 40 Mk II ARF still in the box, and have ordered a Saito 62 four stroke.
I have and intended to run a Super Tigre GS40, but would prefer the cleaner and better sounding four stroke.
So much that I fly smaller electric planes and E Gliders, rather than the messy GS40.

I think it's a nice plane and would look better with the four stroke. I went for the Saito as the recommended OS 52 is now discontinued, and the Saito is better valve in New Zealand, from RCBandit.co.nz.

My question is about prop size and ground clearance. Fly from rough grass strips will be using the recommended larger wheels without wheel spats. The Saito 62 recommended prop range is 11x7-13x7. If I went to 12 inch will I leave enough ground clearance? Not after too much prop, as I don't want to hover it 3D style. Just looking for clean smooth flying sports plane. Perhaps a 11x7 will be enough?

I have also 1 year and some more days the SS Mk || ARF.
I use an OS 65LA with an APC 11x6.
I have also tried 12x7,11x10,13x6,13x4 and while using all of them you want have any problem with ground clearance!

Do you have any pics of it?
I want it to see unboxed ready for assembly

I think I did something wrong. Two Super Tigre .90's with retracks and flaps. I was just looking at the plans wrong.

Flight performance was great! Lots of power and speed. Come time to land, drop the flaps and gear then bring her in
for a smooth one.

I think I will avoid the stock wing mounted landing gear, and mount Dubro super strong (or Goldberg glass filled resin 40-60 size) landing gear to the fuse. May even try stock wheels and spats with this landing gear. Any comments?

Anyone tried a Saito 62a or similar four stroke, what prop size 11x7, 12x6????

Definatly mount the duralum or glass filled resin landing gear to the fuse. I added mine when I built my SS and have not had any nose over issues. I used a super tiger 46 and love it. I'm sure a 62 4stroke would work great. I'm using a 10x8 on the 2stroke but did try an 11x6. The 11x6 worked as long as I stuck the landing. A few times I didnt and struck the prop. I also fly from a paved strip. I would imagine the height of the landing gear would help you determine your prop diamiter. Good luck and have fun flying your SS.

Has anyone used dual aileron servos to enable flaperon mixing? Is it a good idea, to help reduce floaty landings on the SS40 ARF?

Update: not sure, so will go with single standard servo.

Just looking at this thread. i constructed a SS 40 back in the early 90's and started to finish it and then got out of the hobby. It survived all these yrs and after getting back into the hobby last summer i've decided to finish the plane. I stripped off the Monocote and i am using this as a practice plane for fiberglassing. I have used 3/4 oz cloth (koverall of the open areas) and water based polyurethane for the finish. the plane is still extremely light and after painting will look a lot better than monocote. If i remember correctly the weight to date including engine, battery, servos etc plus a projection for the weight of the paint is 5 1/2 - 5 3/4 lbs. The 1st SS 40 i had was given to me in the late 80's rtf and it was a great flier. I can't wait to get the current one up in the air. let's see if i can find a photo or 2.

this is a very early glassing photo. the plane and wing are now glassed, sanded, primed and waiting for paint. i will try to find another photo tomorrow.
