RE: pics of your favorite "throw around" plane
i LOVE that dual front wheel setup.......that's GOT to be a "custom" job!!! LOL j/k
if he'll let me get a pic of it, one of our flyers' trainers (a hobbico avistar) actually has more epoxy showing on the outside of the plane than covering.

IMHO they are. They're pretty much a "Stick" type plane (Big Stik, Ugly Stick, etc....), but they'll do just about anything you ask them to do. Ask anybody who's ever had one and they'll more than likely tell you it's one of the better planes that they've ever flown.

parrthd Allow me to tell you what the vast difference between the "Long John," and the rest of the Stick type planes are. While there are similarities between the two..... it's the differences that set the Long John, apart the rest. I designed the LONG JOHN back in the late 60's as an advanced Fun Fly plane. Back then I participated in fun-flys almost every weekend in The southwest. In designing it I wanted an aircraft that would stay airborne without stalling, and remain highly maneuverable with very little forward airspeed. ( For musical pylons) I wanted it to be be extremely forgiving to less skilled pilots, and the perfect NEXT AIRPLANE. And it had to be a very easy, fast building aircraft. My original plans that I used for building the Long John, was ONE STRAIGHT LINE, 60 inches long. Some of the features that are incorporated in the "JOHN," were also borrowed from the Pattern planes of that era.
Here are the major differences between the Long John, and the other stick type planes.
1: Much longer fuselage (48") for more precision, pattern type stability. Borrowed from the pattern planes.
2" Taller fuselage that would help in knife edge type maneuvers.
3: Fully symmetrical "Airfoil" Less coupling when flying inverted
4: Narrower fuselage for less drag, and faster acceleration when flying "Musical Pylon's".
5: Thicker wing rib. Tremendous slow flying ability.
6: High aspect rudder to give it stability and effectiveness at slow speeds.
While On the surface the LONG JOHN, may look similar to other Stick's........ when it's sitting along side any of the others, the difference's are very apparent. And...........it's these differences that make the LONG JOHN the best of the bunch. "Nothing Flies Like A John". Bob Laine

RE: pics of your favorite "throw around" plane
Well, I guess I would have to say, the Long John is not only one of my favorite knock around airplanes but one of my favorites period. I guess I have about as many flights on one as anybody in the country since I have been flying one for 30 or 35 years. Bob could help me out here with my memory. Not only can you take the Long John and teach someone to fly on it, which I have many times, you can also impress the most hard core 3D flyers. The Long John is a true go where you point it plane that is extremely forgiving. I feel sorry for those who have never had the joy of flying one. Will try to post some pictures in the next couple of days of some of my Long Johns.

RE: pics of your favorite "throw around" plane
Hey Bob, how goes it. I have been looking for a stick to build for a while and all this talk about the Long John has me almost as worked up as Ken. Do you have an electronic version of the plans somewhere? I try not to keep paper plans lying around until I need them, I just keep a scanned in set on my computers for reference until I need them and then usually run them off with Bipe Fliers tile print program.
If you have then in a jpeg/pdf/autocad style file let me know. Sure looks like a winner.
