What about an asp .91 two stroke? I just got mine from that place in the uk and it is less than half of the cost of os 95. Just got 3 tanks through it and it seems to run pretty well, at full throttle with it just breaking into a two cycle it turned a 13x6 at 11500 rpm. Not sure if that really means anythig but heck, its data and compare that to a super tiger of which I have the 75 and it would PEAK at 10900 with a 13x6 (probably too much prop). I've had 2 super tigers so far and hated them both, I recommend staying away from them.

I can't speak for the US .60, but I have a TT .40 Pro in my US .40 and it's plenty of power for me. I can cruise at around 1/2 throttle and although vertical is not unlimited, it goes up high enough so that its just a speck. In other words, it has all the power that I need. I can't imagine what its like with a .55AX like some people stick in it.

With that in mind I imagine that a decent .61 like the TT .61 Pro would be good for power. A .75 would be insane.

I can say, from watching a US 60 fly with it.. the .75AX is a great engine to pull the US 60 around.

I've got the video to prove it...

But.. I won't post it, the err.. landing.. was err, uhm... less than optimal.

Ya, my problem is I'm already used to "insane" power as my Super Sportster 40 has an OS 55ax and a 10x8 prop @ 14,200 doing over 110mph with unlimited vertical! lol. Fastest plane at our club I believe. I think I've ruined myself for all glow planes in power expectations from this point out! lol Next spring I'm trying a 10x9 if I can find it as prop calculator is estimating my plane to move at 125mph.

I am leaning towards the Tower 75 for a few reasons if I can get ahold of one. Biggest being price, ABC, and high compression to which I plan on removing the shims, running a hot plug and mixing up my own FAI fuel because I can get methanol for free. Stupid glow fuel prices!!! ($25/g here for 10% Omega at all 4 LHS)

VMS, send me a PM with the video link! I'd love to see this setup in action.

If you can find one used. What you want for what you described is an MVVS .77

Tons of power and loves low Nitro Fuel

Cdallas2-

Can you show more pics of the undercarriage? Which landing gear did you use, and where did you locate it on the fuse?

Thanks.

About 2.8 minutes after that picture was taken I crashed it [:'(]

It's since been rebuilt with a new foam wing.

It's quite simple really, the balsa on the bottom of the nose was cut out and replaced with a 1/4" ply piece with tri-stock reinforcement which the landing gear then mounts to. It held up for about 40 flights till the crash. 2 flights after the rebuild it tore out but has been beefed up with Carbon Fibre along the seems and has held up well since.

The gear are Bolly F3A which are pricey and hard to get nowadays but Hobbyking make some that should work nicely.

If I were to do it again I would do it similar to my Forward Swept 40 size [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8540770/anchors_8540770/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#8540770]Divny 50[/link]. It uses a full 1/16" ply sheet with another 1/16" ply backup and tri-stock. Much more solid and very little extra weight.

This is a pic of the 40 size. If you want more let me know.

I'm getting closer to finishing mine (finally) and it will be powered by the OS 75AX also. I've had the engine on my Stinger 60 to this point and it's a great engine! Very reliable. I've been photographing the build with the idea of doing a build thread on it, I just don't know if anyone's really interested in "another US60 build thread". MinnFlyer did a wonderful build thread on his and I've borrowed some ideas from that thread.

Default RE: Ultra Sport 60 Engine?

I built and crashed 2 US60s in 2009. I used an OS75AX on them and it worked very well. One of my crashes was caused by the failure of a DuBro brass pushrod end that I soldered on the 2/56 rod at the control horn end. It failed where the threads meet the larger part. On the second one I decided to use 2 aileron servos and recess them in the wing like the scale guys do. I made the frame in the wing from balsa which was part of the problem. I used pin hinges for all surfaces. On the second flight I heard a buzzing noise during a full throttle pass. I pulled the power off and proceeded downwind to land. Suddenly a servo ripped out of the wing and the airplane snapped rolled to its death. Bottom line is to make sure you seal the gaps on the ailerons and don't use brass fittings. I would also switch to 4/40 hardware and use ball ends and quick links. This is an old design and you need to be carefull when switching to modern setups and larger powerplants. Those ailerons are quite thin and can buzz easily if you really lean on the power. The US 60 is a great and steady flying airplane though.

very true about the flutter issues.i sealed all hinge gaps with monokote, glued shear webs on both sides of spar out to wing tips.used those dubro black clevises with the locking device.glued in ply squares at control horn atach locations and cya the cont horn screw mount holes, also toothpicked the hinges to lockem in.,toothpicked the firewall to fuse sides.put servos for each aileron in wings.

I don't know if any Fox owners fly US60s. Has Fox ever revised/upgraded this engine in the last 30 years?

I am building a US60 and thinking of puting a Fox .74 on mine. You can get a good deal on the Fox on their web site spring sale.

Curious, what rpm do you get out of your Fox .74 engine, using which fuel and prop?

I don't have the Fox .74 now, I am planning on ordering it today. On their web site Fox claims 12700 rpm with an 11x8 prop. I plan on using a 13x6 prop and hope to get 11000 to 12000 rpm out of it. I have a OS .75 AX on a GP quarter scale RV-4 which produces 10200 rpm with a 14x6 prop and 10% Omega fuel. I have had very good experiences with Fox engines for over 40 years so with a sale price of $170 for the Fox I thought I would give it a try.

Considering the price of OS these days for any AX, it's a reasonable decision. I have little experience with Fox other than the C/L versions when I was a kid and a .40 I found on a trainer. I have at least 40 used engines in my closet at the moment so buying anything new to try isn't going to happen. I have a kit this thread motivates me to begin. I have a Picco or a Rossi .61 I might run with. My last US60 was second hand, it had a OS 60RF on it with the pipe running through the canopy and the outlet exiting out the bottom of the fuselage. No clean up was ever necessary. Unfortunately it was a heavy plane after retracts were glassed in, twice before I got it.

Can anyone post the max diameter size prop that still gives good clearance on the US 60? I was originally going to go with a Tower 75 2s, but after being sold out for over a year now, I'm considering maybe switching to a 4s .91. After flying a lot with my buddy and his Saito 1.00, I really leaning towards a good 4s. We'll see I guess. Kicker is, I can grab a Magnum .91 4s for $129 new which is why I'm interested. If a 13x8-9 will fit, I think it would be a great combo.

I'm still building my US 60 and haven't worked on it for a couple months as I've been building and now flying my new 30% Edge 540T on DLE-55. I think I'm addicted to gas now... lol. So much less to lug to the field, reliable, no clean-up, cheap fuel, rediculous power, pucker factor, the list goes on and on... :P
