Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke

Getting ready to buy the Great Planes Cessna 182, anyone familiar with the Magnum XL52 blue 4 stroke?? |
RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
Yes I have one. A good engine for the price, read the manual that comes with it and break it in per the manual. Done that with mine and it runs great. The onlt difference I have noticed between the blue heads and the old style magnums is the valve cover really leaks bad! A wipe down is in order between flights! Happy flying!:)

RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
I just had mine out today in a Seagull PT-19. It really lugged down with a 12x6 prop. In fairness that's too much prop for any 4S this size. I replaced it with a 11x6 which flew better.
What are you guys using with the 52 for prop sizes? Thanks, Bob |
RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
I have the Magnum 52 four stroke in my Pete'n'poke. I run a 12X6 Master Airscrew with no problems. Been running that plane that way for 3 years.

RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
Hi Porthole,
I was using a Zinger 12x6 which has a bit more blade area than a Master Airscrew composite prop. My engine was pretty warm after the run making me think that the engine was working overtime. Plus, I was only geting about 9200 RPM out of it. I'll look to see if I have a 12x6 black master airscrew and try it out. I'm also using 10% fuel, FYI. What other props have folks been using. Bob |
RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
Isn't 9200 just about bang on for a four stroke? Seems good to me.

RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
For an engine that small, even in a 4S, I would expect something more in the 10K RPM region.

RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
I have the older one I'm breaking in... Manual says: 11x7,8,9 12x5,6,7 13x4 and break-in 12x5
with the break-in prop i'm getting 9000 rpm after two tanks - black master airscrew |
RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
I have a pair of Magnum .52 RFS engines, both of them turn the Master Air Screw K-series (wide blade for four strokes) 12x6 over at 10,000 rpm.

RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
I am breaking in one now using 12X5 APC (no idea where I got that, can't seem to find replacements). So far, I have not pushed it past 9400rpm. Bill is sure correct about the valve covers leaking! I hope to lap them to get a better seal. After two tanks, it idles very reliably and seems to be a very tractible engine.

RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
I cant get below 3000 reliably and just picked up a hot plug.. it is inverted.
|
RE: Magnum XL52 RFS Blue 4 Stroke
FYI the it was not a hot plug but rather a Hangar 9 4 stroke super plug and with a little low end needle tweaking I'm down 4 to 500 rmp down to a steady 2500 or 2550 which is very good IMO.
