Default What gyros is out there?

I'm looking at getting a new gyro, as my current HK401 just doesn't cut it anymore.
I have started flying basic aerobatics, so I need a gyro much faster than my current, but I don't think i need a super expensive Futaba GY520 or something like that.
And I know little about what exists in between.
My copter is a HK 500 CMT.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I would preferably want a gyro with fully adjustable PID control, but thats not an absolute necessity.

Take a look at the Futaba 401, Logitec 2100, JR 500T, and the Spartan Quark. Some of the ones that I have on my birds.

Leader Hobby has a GY520 clone that runs about $20.00. I have one on my HK450 and it works as good as the original on my Belt CP, but $100.00 cheaper.

Thanks.

I'm a cheapskate because I don't like to support western marketing brands for doing nothing (Its all made in china anyway), so I can just aswell buy it from somebody chinese directly.
So I bought the GY 520, just because its PID, its MEMS, and its so cheap I got nothing to loose.
Are you flying any aerobatics with this gyro?

Thanks again =)

I guess its just to wait and see. Its not quite flying season here, to put it mildly, so its no hurry.
I'll try to remind myself to report back when i got it tested out =)

I tried one of those and wasn't happy with it. It had a hard time maintaining HH after a turn.

You will enjoy the Gy 520, it is a step up from the HK401.

I had one on a HK 450 Pro TT Heli and it worked nice.. eventually you will out grow it though.. and then i can strongly recommend the Quark, which I am using now..

Hopefully thesevids will show you the difference..

Vid 1 - the 450 Pro TT with a GY 520

Vid 2, a 450 GT with a Quark (initial comparison testing)

And this is the 450 Pro TT again with but now it has the Quark and some additional swash tweaking.. Its my best 450 Heli now and the Quark plays a big part in that..

Always a pleasure to watch you fly Rob! Have you ever flown with a Futaba Gy 520?

I made a mistake and took two.
Unfortunately both have the endpoint adjustment bug and are pretty useless.
A whole batch sold while it is faulty.

I will never buy a gyro from Hobbyking again.
Poor quality products and the worse customer support ever.
Once you get to the HK site a pop up telling about warranty will come up. Telling that Hobbyking`s warranty policy is nice and differs from other vendors that make you send the item back in retail packaging.

Ohh, yes. It differs. You have to have kept the package they sent the product with the postage info, the whole product (including any item) and then make a video.
Who keeps the package/parcel of the shippment?
That`s before they permit you get an RMA.
To send it back.
Ohh, yes. It differs. It is the worst service ever.

Thanks

I can definelty see in the pitch pumps that it does much better than the HK401.
My copter swings up to a quarter of a revolution when doing that, and even more if i go from full negative pitch to full positive or vice versa.
And that was the nail in the coffin for the HK401 for me. I simply can not perform a pretty loop, because tail goes all over the place when I change pitch for inverted flight and back.
I can also see the quark is even better, but the quark is also even more expensive, so I think i wait a bit with it still.

Hi Joaquin and thanks..

yes the Gaui X5 has a Futaba Gy 520 and a BLS 251 Tail servo and that combination is in a league of its own.. (But you pay for it...)

The tail on this heli is Rock steady in every manouver, pitch pumps, inverted etc...

Not the best video of the X5 but it gives you an idea..

When you get to inverted low flying then you will really benefit from a quark or futaba 520.. they make like a lot easier when doing low inverted hovers..

I haven't gotten around to try inverted flight yet. It goes fine in simulator, but when I dont trust that tail of mine, I haven't dared to try in real life yet.
nobody knows where the tail goes after a sudden manouver. Can't wait for the GY 520

I have finally gotten my new Leader Hobby Gy520, and what a gyro it is!?
I can not thank you enough for the tip about this little miracle!
How can it be this good, and this cheap?
I got it for 12USD, shipping included, from ebay, and its not just miles better than the HK401, its even cheaper than the HK401 too!
Why is HK401 the chinese working class hero, without a shadow of doubt it should have been the Gy520!
I have only gotten a short test flight so far, and so far I can not tell the difference between this Leader Hobby Gy520, and the Futaba Gy520, which a friend has on his T-rex 600.
I can absolutely recommend this gyro to anyone!
From a mindless piro rate of much more than 1 complete revolution a second, it comes to a dead stop immediately when I release the stick.
And with my active rudder usage, I can not notice any tail drift whatsoever.
I'm sure there is some if you hover for 30 minutes without touching the rudder, but that isn't my kind of flying so it doesn't bother me.

There was 3 downsides though. Just minor ones, but worth mentioning.
No manual included.
Manual is available on the internet, but its been google-translated from chinese (or at least appears to be) so its not easy to understand.
No mounting hardware included.

Once you get the hang of programming the gyro, its actually quite easy and intuitive. But first time programming it, without a proper manual is a bit frustrating.

But for 12$, you get a cracking good gyro, come on! You can't complain!

Glad you like the Gy520, yes it is much better than the HK401, I think the 401B is the hero as it has been out a lot longer but the 520 will surely take the lead in the budget market.

Here is a set up vid for those contemplating one.. the manual seems confusing but the process is really easy..

Now just wait until you try a Quark.. you won't even remember the GY520.... yes the Quark really is that good!.
