1. Use exponential on the cyclic functions
2. Bring the head speed down

I have a DX7 so programming is probably about the same for the DX6i. Bring up the dual rates/expo screen. Select aileron and then dail in about +30% and leave dual rates at 100%. Do the same with elevator. I also use +30% on the rudder. This "softens" the servo response around midstick. In other words, the servo doesn't move as fast but you still have the full range of movement. You can experiment with the expo percentage. You may want more or less. Just remember that Spectrum and JR radios use positive expo to soften things and negative to make it more responsive. Other radio brands like Futaba use opposite values for expo. I wouldn't lower the headspeed. It won't be as stable.

Look in page 109 of your DX6i manual. As it says there, + numbers soften the "feel" around the center of the stick and still give you the total travel programmed on the radio. a - number makes the "feel" more sensitive.

I believe there is an article on how to do this on Trextuning.com.
