what battery to use ?
I am thinking of buying a Trex 500 and would like to know what lipos I can use as I heard you can 4s 5s 6s , 2x3s + Y cable
so what are the pro and cons of using:
4 cell, 5cell, 6cell or 2 x 3cell (with Y cable) and what mah should each type have for flying circuits, hovering and maybe a loop
thanks
Seb

RE: what battery to use ?
i'm using Turnigy 6s batteries...i have mostly 2650mah's...and a 3000 mah, all 30C
I don't do much 3d stuff...i like to fly big fast circuits....these batteries work great for me.
if you have a 450 using 3s...yeah you can double these up to make 6s
T500 is an awesome flying heli

RE: what battery to use ?
Good to know, thanks.
I wonder if there a danger using 2 x 3s in a 500 incase one pack fails but of course a cell could fail in a 6S lipo.
Do people use 4 / 5 s ?

RE: what battery to use ?
have not tried the 4S pack it might be too weak and will only render hovering and flights. I did fly using 5S 3300mah packs with 15T pinion. Works great. It does perform nice 3D with this setup but i prefer 6S packs with 13T pinion as you get better power to weight and speed in 3D is much much reliable.
I have tried using 2X3S packs too with 13T pinion. it did work nicely too but it is good for only around 3 - 4 mins max flight as the 2200mah packs for the 450 does not have that much juice to last longer. It will surely damage the packs once you get too happy with your flights and getting the pack drained out..

You may wish to consider the purchase of a Thundar Power brand battery. The thing about Thunder Power batteries is that though you pay upwards for the initial one if anything happens to the battery for the lifetime of the battery the manufacturer will provide you a new one for a nominal price compared to the initial purchase price.
Iuse a Thunder Power 5000mAh 22.2V 6Sfor my TREX600.It cost $225.00 newIf anything goes wrong with the battery during its lifetime they will provide a new replacement for $125.00.

RE: what battery to use ?
how long do you get with the 6s lipo doing 3d, 4 mins ?
I'm just learning and have many 3s packs but 6 mins hovering and flying casual is ok for me, will that kind of flying kill my 2 x 3s lipos ?

Depends on how you do 3D. if you can throttle manage 4 mins will just be enough.....

RE: what battery to use ?
i'll probably stick with 7.5 mins at idle down just doing circuits. Would that be ok with 2 x 3s ?
I'll have the copter x 500 heli.

well in normal mode running around 2400 - 2500 head speed will give you roughly 5 mins of safe flights. But for 3D.. 4 mins will do. Packs will be drained out to around 75 - 80% so the pack basically has around 3.75 - 3.80V per cel. but this is without load. so loaded it might be around 3 - 3.3V

That's not bad but i think the 6S would give you a good 7 mins. I don't know what my head speed will be. I'll be buying the 500 class + electronics pack from ehirobo with 2 x 3s to get me hovering. I never take a lipo down further than 3.7V per cell.

3.7v will be the no load capcity.... but if you have a data logger you will see that the running voltage will be around 3 - 3.2V with that left on the pack

RE: what battery to use ?
I'm currently running 2x2200mah 20c lipos and I'm getting 4:30 flight times. I think I could get a bit more but I dont like to over do the lipos. At the same time I'm also going to buy some 3s, 2650mah 30c from HobbyCity. Only $20 a piece and will then be able to get 5:30 flight times. I perfer to run 2x lipos together rather than one 6s pack simply because in a crash, if a 6s gets damaged your out the entire battery. With 2x batteries together you may only loose one. I've been running the 2200's since I got my 500, never had a problem and have yet to kill any batteries because of it. Running a HobbyKing 1600kv motor, 14T pinion with 100 flat curve in Idle up.
After 4:30 minutes, motor and ESC are only 120 degreese.

RE: what battery to use ?
Turns out the HobbyKing 1600kv motor I got is only putting out 1450kv. I've read the reviews on HobbyCity.com and people are loving the Turnigy 1800kv motor and have said it's putting out over 1900kv. It's so badass that you have to run 11-12T pinion and a throttle curve no higher than 90%. So I got one on order along with some Nano-Tech 2650, 3S 25c w/55C burst, should be interesting.
