I set up my new 450 with the recommended pitch and throttle settings, on the first test the head speed seems a little to fast for basic test flying. is it ok to tone it down a little? should i adjust the pitch, throttle or both. 3550 kv motor 13 tooth pinion. thanks

I think with the 13 t pinion your getting a bit over 3000 rpms at the head (between 3000 & 3200 depending on your motor). You should really try a 12t pinion which will give you 2800 to 3000. Most blades are only rated to 2800rpms, so be very careful.

When I first got my SA I used the 11 tooth. Depending on what battery you use you can expect about 2600 to 2800 rpm. That's plenty for hovering and forward flight. You'll also get longer flight times over the 12 or 13 tooth. If your just starting out, longer flight times are preferable over very high head speeds.

the kit came with 11, 13, & 15 tooth pinion gears so I am going to try the 11 Thanks

Fast headspeed is a good thing...do not get intimidated by it! The faster the headspeed, the more stable of a hover you will have and the more tail authority you'll have. But it will be more responsive as well...

i do agree with skarn about the faster headspeed however, like robtangie said, some blades are not rated for the higher speeds. before you move up to the higher head speeds, get yourself some good carbon blades. Align's carbons are nice, but there are some better brands available, i can't remember the names off the top of my head at the moment.

if i'm not mistaken, thats what i started with. i have since moved up to the 13 tooth and i have a 220mm flybar with carbon paddles and no weights. this setup is very responsive yet it has a fairly stable hover. don't get me wrong though, you will be very pleased with your current setup but, once you decide you want to start working on some 3D, you'll want to go this route, maybe even take the flybar off, lol.

if you have a comp radio...you can adjust your throttle/pitch curves to make it fly where you are comfortable...then if you need more power, you can quickly add it

The higher head speed sounds great its a lot faster than my raptor 30, but if i decide to slow it down will i loose tail control ? recommended settings for normal is T 0 80 100 p 35 50 95 is this good for basic sport flying?

The 11 tooth with the stock motor will work great if you're just starting out. I'm running a 13 with a Scorpion motor now but I ran the 11 with the stock motor and then put the 13 on after about 6 months. Like I said, the 11 will give you longer flight times and you still have good head speed and tail authority. It's just my opinion but I wanted longer flight times in the beginning and when you're still just learning upright hover and forward flight I don't think you rally need 3000 rpm head speed. Also, I don't think you can compare your 450's head speed with a Raptor 30. Small helis use really high head speeds compared to large helis. For example, my 450 runs between 3000 and 3200 whileI have heard of others running over 3400 rpm. My 600nitro Pro runs around 2100 max. If you tried to run a 450 at that low a head speed I think you would have problems.

the recommended throttle and pitch settings in the book are a starting point. after a few flights you may want to alter them to your taste. just do a little bit af experimenting and you'll find the settings that best suit your comfort level and flying style.

I would suggest middle ground, 13T, not to slow not fast, good run times. As someone mentioned you can always tone down your headspeed my reducing the throttle curve. As you gain more and more confidence you can increase the throttle curve.
