Okay.

Ran the Hanno with Nelson P/L on the bench today. Unexpectedly easy handling on this engine. Guess on thisone the previous ownerDIDN'T mess with the pump screws. All starts were with a 'chicken stick' after a few flips watching the fuel shoot into the carb and adding glow plug heat. Found it to start good at partial throttle. Used Bax's advice to set the n/v at no more than 1 turn open for pumped OSs. Firstrun waswith an APC 11~12 and the header only. WHAT! I can't hear you!Sounds like I have cotton in my ears. Hope this ringing isn't permanent. Last time this happened was after riding my sister's V Rod while she was out of town. Why do people put those loud pipes on their motor cycles? Anyway, I didn't want to stop the Hanno once it started. Ran about 8 oz fiddling with the n/v and checking the exhaust then shut it down and got some ear plugs.

Added the Hatori 650 pipe (smooth) to the generous 7" header and tached around and up to 10.5 with plenty of oily exhaust coming out of the stinger. Tweaked the n/v back and forth a few clicks trying to find the right mix. Got it rich a couple times and it quit but restarted easily. Learned to jockey the throttle to keep it running, with fuel spitting out of the carb,while leaning it some if I made it too rich. Two tanks down.

Third and final tank of the day I puta 13~8 APC like the previous owner sent (but balanced) and ran itup toand around 11.5. After cooling it still has pretty tight pinch. That's about 28oz of 10% Omegawith 6 oz or so of Benol added for approx. 21% lube.Used an OS #8 as recommended. Ran it dry and added a few drops of oil.

I hope to continue the 'break-in' next week when I'm through with a 7 dayhitch of night shiftsat our small ruralhospital.Gonna try some longer chambered pipes and differentprops to settle in at around 9500/10,000 rpmas recommended by Bax and the paperwork.

Ran it again.

Since the last time I have acquired an original OS Hanno Special/Hatori 700 red pipe and it was used today. Also changed the prop to an APC 13~9. Same header, fuel, plug and chicken stick. Got it all set up on the test stand on the bench, primed it a couple turns, hooked up the plug heater and it started on the first flip. I'm beginning to like these OS pumpers. Had to adjust the n/v for the different prop/pipe combo and when it was warmed up it ran 10,300 wide open and 10,000 comfortably a few clicks richer. Seems to be running right at the level it's supposed to be. Was a bit rich at idle/transition so I shut it down and adjusted the low end. Took a couple tries to get it close but it's better now. I'll need to try some different header lengths to get it set up just right but for now I'm happy with it. If it weren't so dang HOT I mighta tried some other (13~10, 12~12) props but I wanted to test run an old ringed SF that I did some port work on last night. Opened up the exhaust ports to approximate the Hanno's. Reported the results on the SF thread.

10,300 sounds very good. That 1.75hp and 10.33lbs static thrust. Impressive.

Been reading some old posts about Hanno Specials...

...and found a recommendation from flywilly that, in his experience, the 'pipe length' for Hannos should be 18" to 18.5". My current test rig has a length of 20". It was 18.5" for the runs with the Hat 650 pipe. Have also read there is approximately 200 rpm for 10mm increase/decrease in tuned system header length. So, maybe there are another few hundred rpm available for my engine. Have some used headers coming and will wait to see if there is a shorter one in the batch before cutting this one.

From what I've read, the Hanno was designed to turn a 12 x 12 at 10000rpm to keep the noise down.

If you had a pattern ship ~7lbs. I lived with the noise and ran an 12x11, then 12.5x10 as the patterns got slower and slower.

For the 12x12 APC pattern the Hattori pipe should be 19-19,5 ". With 15% nitro, 18 % öl, OS 8 plug you wilkl see 9700 rpm or a little bit more.

16" -16,5 " is to short for this engine, it is a puller for 10 000 rpm on the ground.
The Hanno II love a little more the lower rpm. But 9500 rpm on the ground is a must.

I still have a lot of Hannos in action all with Nelson piston and cylinder.

My old MKi would turn 9,500-9,600 on a APC 12x12 with the head as it came from OS. I still wish I had that engine.
