Default Super Tiger 51

I have just purchased 2 Super Tiger 51 engines. What rpms can I expect out out of these engines and what prop do they like? I was thinking they would have more power that OS46,Thunder Tiger46, or Tower46.
What do you think? The price was reasonableat $79-10 rebate = $69

I saw 11,800 rpm with an APC 11x6, peak. With an MA 11x6, this would translate to early 13s. Let us know what she does.

At the same pricepoint give me a TT PRO46 ....or for that matter an O.S. 46AX over a ST G51 any day. You can keep the Tower 46.

My 51 in a 4*40 likes the APC 11x5, 12x4, 12.25x3.75. I tried the 11x6, speed seemed the same but thrust was really down. Sorry I don't have any tach readings. MikeB

I have the engine up and running now but haven't checked the rpms. By the sound of it on a 10X6 it is doing pretty well. The engine can go from idle to max in a split second. I have just installed a 11X7 and this will tell the real story.

Well contrary to what I thought the ST51 handled the 11X7 quite well at 11500+ on 15% nitro and 20% oil. I felt it would be a little sluggish but it wasn't. It had good transition and idle with the 11X7 and to be honest it pulled the Ultra Stick 40 a little too fast, especially considering it has seen a few crashes. The muffler is too quite for me but I will stick with it for now. Now after about 30+ tanks I am wondering how it will run after 30+ gallons. If you have ever tacked a OS 55AX with 11X7 please chime in.

I was looking at the OS 55 but the $150 price is just too steep when this little powerhouse was purchased for $69. Does anyone know what the liner material is Iron/Brass/Chrome???
I bought this engine to replace an OS50Sx and I think it has as much power.

Oh thank goodness the liner is steel, that way I know the liner won't peel like the OS 46 I had.

I have an old STS ported ST G60 ringed with chrome plate brass sleeve. They were advertised as ringed ABC construction.

Well still impressed with the 51 after a full weekend of flying with the 11X7 on the nose. When I came in Sunday night I felt like the 51 could handle a 12X6 Master Airscrew K series. If this thing spinns the 12X6 like it does the 11X7 I don't know what I will do. I have had 61s that couldn't spin a 12X6 desent.

Just came in from the garage where I tacked the little 51. WOW!!is all I think of to say. I went into my prop box thinking I would find a 12X6 APC but there were none to be found but I did find a new Master Airscrew 12X6 K Series with those wide blades made for 4 strokes. I started not to put it on but went ahead anyway. You should see the little enging with that big ole black prop on the front of. I makes the think look like a little 10 or 15 size engine sitting on the front of the Ultra Stick. Having a little spare time this evening I decided to fuel it up and give it a try. To my surprise the thing like to hit 11,000. It was running at 10,800+ running sobbering rich. I didn't lean it up any to check max rpms becuse the engine still is breaking in. It is so rich when you take of it want to four stroke for a little while but leans up in the air. I'M sure if I leaned the needle it would hit 11 thousand. Needless to say I was totally amazed. I bought a
5 pack of those Master Airscrew 12X6 a few years ago when I had a Saito 65 and have since sold the engine. I was beginning to think I would never have another engine that would pull that size prop but now I will be getting some use out of at least one of them. I know that 10,800 may be a little low in the power band but I am convinced it will pull it in the air. The engine doesn't seem to mind pulling these larger props one bit.

I took the 51 out for a spin today with the 12X6 on the front. I must say I still had reservations about how it could handle the 12 inch prop but boy was I wrong. I flew it for over 2 hrs and I mean in the air that long not at the field for 2 hrs. The 51 deffently can swing a 12X6 without any problem. The transition is good even in a hoover. I can fly this engine for over 20 minutes with the 12X6 on 12oz of fuel and have fuel to land. Now lets talk topend performance. WOW againg is putting it lightly the 51 can spin that 12X6 so fast it starts to resonate or buzz as it gets close to the speed of sound in level flight. It really unloads quite well in level flight and in a dive it really hauls. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one for a minute. I can't wait to get her back out at the field.

The torque of this little engine is amazing to say the least, as it is almost lie a diesel with the ability to turn up like a dragster.

I just wonder how large of prop this powerhouse will handle? I know it is at about its limit with the 12X6 but I am now thinking it will handle a 13X6 but might be a little sluggish on rep-up but who knows, I didn't think it could handle the 12X6.

How do you think the 51 will run on 7.5% nitro? I like to blend my own fuel and if I start with 15% nitro and cut it with straight methanol and add the proper amount of oil you come out with 7.5% nitro. I will give it a try as soon as possible.

Now I have a few gallong through this engine I am really winding her out in the air. I have checked the rpms and it looks like the 12X6 on the ground is spinning at 11,200 but in the air it is another story all together.. I am now flying wide open for much of the flight and I often check the temp of the engine on landing by feeling of the engien at different points and to be honest the little 51 isn't even breating hard to spin this big ole prop at these speeds. The only thing that feels warm is the head and it isn't very hot. The Ultra Sport 40 is deffenately getting a workout. Still haven't mounted a 13X6 but will soon.

To me the best prop for this engine is an APC12.25x3.75 wide blade. Lot of 3D pilots use it. With a pipe and header mine is turning the 12.25 right at 14,000 and it will turn an APC 11.5x6 about the same. Either one of those two props are in my opinion the perfect props for this engine. A 12x6 is too big. These motors like RPM and you could burn it up before you know it with that much load on it. My G-51 is on a 4lb Little Stick. I will be flying it next weekend. Check out my thread on my G-51.

Something else... I bought a SuperTigre GS-45 and it doesn't seem to have near the power that the G-51 does. This motor is struggling to hit 11,000 with an APC 11x6 and my G-51 with the stock exhaust was turning 1600 more than that.

SpinnerRow, that sounds great. It looks like you have an excellent plane/engine.

One day when I have some time to kill, I might try testing the G.51 against the G.45 with a range of props like: 9x6, 9x7, 9x8, 10x6, 10x7, 10x8, 11x5, 11x6, 11x7, 12x4, 12x5, 12x6. I don't think there's a whole lot of difference between the two engines, but a test like that might reveal something interesting.

Yea, I would definately be interested in seeing that. I bought a Jett Stream muffler for the GS-45 (on a Goldberg Tiger 2) and I plan to run an APC 11x5 on it. That should get me in the sweet spot for the engine.

My tests on the 45 and 51 occured in quite different weather conditions as well so that will have an affect on my results I'm sure. Maybe someone can do some SAE calculations on them to compare apples to apples. But here in Texas, it gets freakin hot in the summer so we need all the help we can get!

hi  only thing i did do was remove the stock muffler  baffle15 % omega fuel-13,200-13,400   RPM'S on the ground -11/5  APC - might add -    a great sounding engine-    a lot to love- -one of the best engines for the dollars-just took a long break in time to hold a good idle and top endbut worth the time- (4-tanks of fuel  )-no need for expensive 50 size engines with this engine- from s/t around   do all you can to keep the muffler in place-only down side of this engine  i can seeis muffler design-that applies to all s/t enginesblue loctight all bolts

I got a Supertiger COMO ABC .051. It is a real powerhouse. I do not know what it revs, but after I run it and fly, guys come over to ask what kind of engine is that. It has been my favorite engine of all. Capt,n West Mi

For the money, it is hard to beat the ST G-51. I've got about four gallons through mine running it with a Macs muffled tune pipe and header. These engines like the RPMs and to me the best props for the G-51 are:
[ul][*] Master Airscrew Scimitar S2 11x6 - flexible blades allow it to spin up a bit more.[*] APC 11x5 - 11x6 just won't let the engine get into the sweet spot.[*] APC 10x6 to 10x8 - 10x8 on a pipe, may be too much for the stock exhaust.[*] APC 12.25x3.75 - for 3D and good climbing
[/ul]

You need to prop this engine to run at least 14,000 on the ground to get into the sweet spot - IMO.

Currently I run an APC 10x8 at 14,200-14,400 with a pipe and 15% fuel. It will turn a 10x7 a bit over 15,000 but the vibration and noise was a bit much for me.

I also have a Jett muffler that I have run on it with equally good results. Not as good as a well tuned pipe but close and a lot less hassle. The Jett is a bit louder than a Macs muffled pipe though.

I have a love/hate relationship with the ST carburetors at times, but right now mine seems to be running about perfect. It takes some getting used to. OS carbs are almost set and forget (except for the occasional high speed adjustement for weather conditions).

I would love to try a G-90 some day if I ever buy a plane that needs that sized engine.

Probrojoe is having good luck with his ST engines. He runs one with a pipe on an F-20 Tigerkitten.
