I've had a great run for three years (still on its original battery BTW) from my cheapo Tower tach, as seen here...

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXPT31&P=ML

Most of the time it reads reliably about 6" from the prop. Certain light conditions can cause false readings but these are rare and are obvious when they happen.

Unlike some, this tach switches itself off if it hasn't been used for a minute or two (I always forget to switch mine off).

If you leave it out in the summer sun with the LCD up, it can blacken over sometimes, but it comes right once it is taken out of the sun.

It's been pretty rugged (it's been dropped a few times) and has never given any trouble.

It's well worth the 20 bucks IMHO.

I got one of those too. For 20 bucks it is a bargain, gives excellent readings, and has nice features. It does, however, give bad readings (rediculously bad) when it is low on battery. And unrealistic when it is in the wrong lite. Nothing serious, just FYI

Oh, and when mine was running out of battery it read

32,000 for my os 46 ax on an 11-6 prop

lets see that would be, according to the Thrust calc
17hp and 45 pounds of thrust LOL

replacced the battery and it was once again giving me excellent readings
