Anyone else have any numbers with this motor?
So far on my 30 minutes old engine i've tached it at 14200-14300
on 10% nitro w/APC 10-6,stock muffler w/baffle still in for now.
How is that so far?
Off to balance an 11-5!

11-5 APC @13100 still rich.
I'm at 2900 ft ASL.
Will try tommorrow without baffle.
I think this one's gonna be a good one for my super sportster,Finally.

15,500 with a 10x6, baffle in, 2900 ', on a hot day. After 3 tanks of fuel, and 5 flights, it idles well now. Just can't get it to shut down. I close the throttle ALL the way, and she keeps on running........

Also, tried running it without the baffle, and it wouldn't run at low and mid RPM's without getting air bubbles in the line. Not enough pressure, I would guess, for the heighth of my fuel tank relative to the carb without the baffle.

Seems like a VERY strong engine, however!

Why are you guys using a .40 size prop (10-6) on a strong .52?
Just like to hear em howl eh?

Because the instructions SPECIFIED a 10x6 prop for break in. It's now turning a 12x4, for 3D flight. I normally run an 11x6 on my .46 FX for sport flying, and a 12x6 on my .61FX, all APC props.

Hi,Sled.
What kind of fuel are you using?
No,i'm not worried i got a dead horse out of this little gem!
I've since put it in my old fun flyer and can say nothing but;exxxcellent!
What were you saying about a 10-6 makin' this thing What? did i hear that right "growl"
Sing to high heaven would be a more suitable way to convey this message. That is as recommended!
After break-in i went 12.25x3.75.
Sorry haven't tached it with that one yet.
But did run a Bolly 11.5x6 on 10% and man i'm just not used to landing that fast with a super aerodynamic super sportster, crosswind yet.
This motor and all the wonderful people here at RC sure have helped me take this "awsome hobby" to new heights.
Till i can fly and post again.

sledman - You have an air leak in your carb. A baffle has nothing to do with bubbles in your fuel line. With the baffle you have more pressure which masks some of the problem. If your engine is running with the barrel closed it has to be getting air from somewhere.

Does not sound like this engine is all that impressive. An OS .46 with a 10X6 APC will hit an easy 16K. Usually run a 9.5X7 at around 14.8 - 15K for racing. I would expect a little more out of a .52

Not in Idaho, in the summer. The temperature and the altitude together create what is called "Density altitude". As I type, I just called the Boise airport and got the pilot's weather report. Density altitude, at 4:32 Mountain time is 5,400 ' ASL. That is lower then it has been. It's been between 5,500' and 6,000' recently. Believe me, that affects performance in ANY engine, and 2-stroke engines are affected more than 4-stroke engines. AND.....the smaller the displacement, the more they are affected. This .52 DEFINEATELY out performs, and is stronger, than my O.S. .46 FX. Not that the FX isn't a great engine, because it is. So is my O.S. .61 FX. They ALL run better when it's cooler out, though.

Bubbles in the remote needle are usually not air! Think about it if the tank is under pressure and you have a leak the fuel leaks out, the air doesn't leak in. Air bubbles in the remote needle are usually caused by the drop in pressure across the needle causing a small amount of fuel to vaporize. Sometimes raising the tank pressure will help. Often there is no bubbles at idle but bubbles occur at higher speeds, this is because the higher fuel flow causes a higher pressure drop accross the needle. Unless the bubbles are very large they are not a problem. Also bubbles are more likely to occur at higher temps and altitude.

Adrian,
Probably an air leak through the front bearing, carb base, idle needle, barrel, or backplate. The backplate is the easiest to fix, but often overlooked, on a lot of overseas engines the screws are often not tightened enough.

You can find your air leak by placing a hose on the air intake dunk the motor in alchol and pressureize the motor make sure the piston is at the eshaust port you can check the needle valve the same way just take it off the motor

XLS 52
9x8 prop
macs header with mousse can muffler

I still have more to gain by taking a little more off of the header but for now it is good. I am very impressed with the power of this motor.

This engine was not run for 3 yr's, last flight was gopher hole crash of edge 360 (oops, &^*$ thumbs),Today mounted on test bench with old 10% wildcat. 10x7 master airscrew prop cut down to 9.75 dia and balanced. pressure altitude approx 500', temp 87F. peak RPM 16K with about 400F cylinder head temp. Best normal full power adjustment looks like 15500 RPM with about 360 degrees F cylinder head temp. I make that about 1.65 HP at normal needle adjustment, with 1.8 possible.

a MAS 10-7 at 15500 rpm is consuming 1.34 hp, how did you make it 1.8 hp?

My piped XLS 52 is turning APC 8-8 at 19200 rpm and I have only just begun cutting the header

Mine pulls exactly 300rpm less than my OS 55ax. 13,900rpm on a 10x8 APC on 10% Omega.
