Zinger Pro 18/8
Apc 18/8
Menz 18/8
Mejzlik 18/8

all ran on 160 O.S
no Fuel Pump
pitts Style Bisson muffler

We Ran the engine to the lean setting ( set by Tach..Not by Ear) then backed off apx. 200 Rpm for Flight so as not to lean out during flight

Results

Zinger Pro 8500-8600 Rpm 6 decibles above the Menz, Mejzlik
Apc 8400-8500 Rpm 6 decibles above the Menz, Mejzlik
Mesjlix 8000-8100 Rpm 96 Decibles at 10 feet
Menz 7700-7800 Rpm 96 Decibles at 10 feet

I fly the Mejzlik on a H9 Edge,

Hmmm I wonder why mine is so low.... Maybe it's the nitro content.. I can't see going from 10-15% giving 800+ rpm
then again you never know

Default Figures to come

I have just purchased an OS 160 FX. It will be next week before I can start break-in and testing. My bench setup is engineered for me to obtain very accurate static thrust measurements. I will start with the Stock OS muffler, Cool Power 15%, and an APC 18x6W prop. After break-in, I will change to the new SlimLine inverted Pitts muffler, and probably a Cline regulator.

My ST 2300 turns the APC 18x6W at 8700 rpm, and develops 17lbs, 2 oz static thrust. I am hoping the OS 160 will get another 400 - 500 rpm on the same prop. That should develop over 18 lbs static thrust.

I will post results when I have them.

How much slower do your planes fly with the 6 pitch props ?

I am using 18x8 on GP Giles 202 and want to try an 18x6
I don't want it to be slow and mushy though.

Default 18x6 vrs 18x8

The last plane I flew with the 18x6W was a H9 120 size Ultra stick. It had plenty of airspeed for me. Biggest advantages of the 18x6W is the vertical pulling power and down line breaking. This is a wide blade prop (Fun Fly). ON my ST 2300 at 8700 rpm it would hover my Ultra Stick ( 14.5 lbs wet). And pulling the throttle back to idle is like putting on the air brakes.

Default First figures

I got an unexpected break this afternoon, so I fired up the OS 160. Brand new out of the box. It started on 3rd flip. I ran two 14 oz tanks of 15% Cool Power through it. Kept it rich according to break-in instructions in book.
First numbers - at end of 2nd tank, still very rich, stock OS muffler:
APC 18x6W -- 8850 - 8950 rpm. Lifted 17 lbs, 10 oz on my test setup.
I can tell I am going to like this engine.

More to come next week.....

Default 3 flips... 2 to many...

Ok heres the drill..open your carb wide open...put your finger over the carb and rotate(not Flip the prop) counter clockwise 5(five) times. This puts the fuel in the crank case. next close the carb..and flip the prop counter clockwise (with out the finger) ..3-5 times ( this brings the fuel to the piston)..If you have mounted your prop so it is horizontal on the Back side of the compression stroke..then position the prop vertical..apply the glow while holding the prop.. now rotate the prop clockwise just before the back of the compression stroke..now place two fingers close to the spinner on the front of the prop do not cross the 1/2 way point foreword to back..now just flip the prop no more then 1/2 inch clockwise and it will start Every time....This is the most dependable motor I have ever owned.

Default Not that big of a deal

Thanks for the detailed break down on the start sequence. The 3 flips was on the very first start. After that it started on the first flip every time. I'm not concerned about starting. Besides, as soon as I get a spinner I will use my electric starter. Actually I do not like spinners, so I ordered an aluminum spinner nut from PSP Manufacturing www.pspmfg.com . Dubro does not make a 3/8 x 24 nut.

Default More testing

I ran some more fuel through the 160 today. I now have burned six 14 oz tanks.

For the last tank I removed the baffle in the stock OS muffler. Evidently the 18x6W is running considerably above the peak torque rpm for this engine, because I saw less than 50 rpm improvement with the baffle removed. I also tested with a Zinger Pro 20x6. It picked up 250 rpm with the baffle removed.
Both props lifted just over 18 lbs on my test bench, but the Zinger would allow the engine to throttle up noticeably quicker.
I am getting a reliable 1950 rpm with both props, and zero hesitation from idle to wide open. I have leaned the low speed needle about 3/4 turn from factory setting. I am still waiting for the Slimline Inverted Pitts muffler and Cline regulator to arrive.

Current readings from today (today was very overcast and VERY humid).
Atlanta, Ga. About 800 Ft. ASL.

APC 18x6W - 9000rpm - Lifted 18 lbs, 4 oz.
Without baffle, maybe 9050.

Zinger Pro 20x6 - 7650 rpm - lifted 17 lbs, 13 oz.
Without baffle - 7900 rpm - lifted 18 lbs, 2 oz.

Fuel is Cool Power 15% nitro. Plug is OS # 8.

Default More testing, SlimLine Pitts.

For anyone interested.
Finally got the SlimLine Inverted Pitts muffler (with smoke chamber) Saturday.
Stock OS muffler with Muffler adapter plate = 10.2 oz.\
SlimLine Inverted Pitts (with Smoke) = 7.3 oz.
Slimline does not use the adapter plate. It bolts directly to the exhaust manifold.

I have burned slightly more than 1 gallon of Cool Power 15% now.

RPM readings with the Slimline were the same as with stock OS with baffle removed. The Slimline seems a little more quiet.

I think I will use the Zinger Pro 20x6 for first flights. I am getting slightly over 7900 rpm now, and lifting 18 lbs, 4 oz on the bench. The Zinger spins up much faster than the APC, and the lower RPM (7900 vrs 9000) is noticeably quiter.

I still need to try a Perry VP-30 pump or the Cline regulator. I am leaning toward the pump. I will need to tap the crankcase for pressure to use either. I talked with Bill at Cline today, and he says to put the regulator between the remote needle valve and carburetor inlet. I'm kind of uncomfortable with that. I have a Perry Pump on my ST 2300 and have had great service and success with that setup.

More later.....

Default And now the "Cline Story"

Well, I decided to try the Cline. I already had one, so why not......
I called Bill at Cline again. He elaborated a little more on the remote needle with Cline Regualtor setup. As he instructed, I installed the Cline Regulator BETWEEN the output of the remote needle valve and the input nipple on the carburetor. The Engine backplate was tapped for pressure just above the cross braces intersection.
Results are outstanding so far.
Throttle response is noticeably quicker. Needle adjustment is much more sensitive and precise. I went from running about 2 turns open on high end to about 3/4 turns open !!! I leaned the low speed another 1/2 - 3/4 turns. I am getting a reliable 1750 rpm idle with instant throttle response after 45 seconds idle.
Top end only picked up about 50 - 75 rpm over previous readings.
I am now ready to install this engine in the Edge. Another couple of weeks and I will be ready to test flight. (busy schedule)

Default aerosplat

I remember your postings from the beginning on the Aero-works 60/90. Do you still have and fly it? I stop reading the thread after I planted mine in the runway at about 400 miles per hour. Took it home in a trash bag. My saito 100 lived through it and will soon find a new home in a golberg ultimate.

I have the 160 in a hangar 9 edge 540. My buddy has a digital scale that we weighed it with and it weighed in at 10.5. I think this is astoudingly light given the weights everone else has. I am using light batteries, carbon fiber gear, foam wheels but that is about it. The relevance of all this? I then put the same scale on the same day on the tail wheel of the edge cranked up. 160 with an apc18x6W, 250rpms off of max right around 9000, maybe 8900, the scale only showed 15.5 pounds.

Now, the question is, A) is the scale off so my plane really weighs around 12.5 and the thrust is actually 17.5? My buddy, whom I trust for these things, says, tis not an error in the scale.
or B) We were on the field in the grass. I realize not the most accurate weigh to try and measure thrust, was there something we did wrong?

I had previously been under the impression that I should get approximately 17.5 to 19 pounds of thrust on with this prop/engine combo. I have a bolly 18 x 6 and was thinking of trying a mezlik either 18 x 6 or 20 x 6.

My goal is unlimited vertical. 3D flight and power aerobatics. It does not appear to have unlimited veritical though I've only flown a few times and have had a couple of minor mechanical difficulties.

You stated that the 20 x 6 throtteled up quicker. How is it that a 20" diameter prop, with the same pitch, would throttle up quicker?

Any info appreciated.

Default scale????

I have a H9 Edge w/ oS 160 it used to weigh at 13lbs 2 oz Now after carbon gear wheels and so on.. 12lbs 9oz

I would bet youe scale is off or test on concrete.

also at 10.5 lbs that os should be pulling that plane like crezy. and the 18/8 mezlik
is what i use and I love it...

Default Weight, Thrust, and what's happening???

The way I see it................

I strongly suspect your buddy's scale is off. I can't imagine a H9 Edge at 10.5 lbs!! I suggest you check the scale with a KNOWN weight.
Also, hooking to the tail wheel is not the most accurate method for measuring static thrust. There are several factors that will introduce drag which will lower your reading.

On my test bench I have my engine stand mounted on a ball bearing drawer slide. As the engine revs up it pulls the "drawer" forward. I have a nylon cord hooked to the rear of the drawer. The cord runs over a ball bearing pulley and drops 90 degrees toward the ground. I have a bucket hanging on the cord that I add weight to. With the engine at full power I load the bucket until it just starts to pull the drawer backward. I then weigh the bucket on a digital postal scale to determine how much static thrust the engine pulls. I insure that all this is LEVEL, and the thrust line is straight in line with the prop shaft.

Temperature, air density, and humidity will affect thrust as well. For a given prop and rpm reading - Cool, dry, dense air will produce more thrust than hot, wet, thin air.

The props...
Remember, the Composite APC 18x6W is a WIDE blade Fun Fly prop. The Wood Zinger Pro 20x6 is a standard blade prop. The Aerodynamic loading of the props is about equal. The APC weighs 4.4 ounces, the Zinger 2.6 ounces. The lighter wood prop presents less load at lower RPM, thus it will spin up quicker. Also, the Zinger is peaking at about 1000 rpm less than the APC, which puts it just below the peak torque rpm for the 160. Rate of acceleration falls very quickly once peak torque is exceeded.

Sorry to hear about your AW Edge. I still have my Edge, but have retired it. After all the repairs it just got toooo heavy and would not 3-D well at all.
This OS 160 is going into my new Lanier 120 size Edge.

I just bought my second 1.60 and I'm selling off everything else I own. These motors are great, I love 'um. I never got a tach on them, but I have been using 18-8's exculsivly. I just got some 18-6's to see if it will pull out of a hover a little better, but no tach numbers to go on.
