All that oil would not be required if Saito still used bronze bushings in their crank pin/rods. They have gone cheap on all their newer designs. So far the 325 radial is still properly built and has no wear problems regardless of fuel used.

why are you guys running remote glow all the time? thats very bad for the engine as itwill cause pre ignition that will loose you alot of power and damage the engine. I am also curious to note that on 5% nitro i am getting better rpm than anyone using 15%, that seems a little strange to me. As for getting 7000 on a 22x12 i think they are nuts, i can get 6000 at best

Running on the test bench shows no difference in RPM readings between glow on and glow off at high rpm. My greatest concern is the temperature difference between the three cylinders. #1 is running the hottest. I assume its fully leaned out. #3 is always the coolest and I assume the richest. Maybe for practical purposes it doesn't really matter. Roy has the best Idea. Put it in a plane and fly it!

If you don't leave glow on all the time # 3 will drop out, it will come back on when reignited. Horizon even said to leave on-board glow on all the time.

I find that no2 pot is the coolest on mine and the others are about the same with 3 slightly hotter, i have no issues with the pots going out at anything above 1/3 power. it might be because i am using less nitro and so a leaner mix, less wet stuff in the heads may allow them to keep running, especially as i have, probably, a slightly higher head temp...in any case, it should not need glow support, saito say so and so do the uk importers, very odd that you guys all need loads of nitro and glow support.

As for that La7 it looks fantastic, really want one now!</p>

I picked up my kit yesterday, all the laser cut parts, sheet/strip and the sierra retracts, its a work of art really! i have seen a few things i will try and do differently, but the plans look very nice and i dont think it will be quite as confusing as it at first appears. As for your cockpit detail i would love to know what you used for that as its all very nice! Also do you know of a build thread for the LA7? it might be nice to have a look if there is one on here

Dave Andersen the plan designer is my wingman. We fly together 1-2 / week in the summer. When he cut both kits for us, he made the cockpit kit for me from stuff laying around his workshop. The plans show good detail to the highlights. My radio compartment I copied from a book on the La 7 and made out of balsa blocks. The pilots were made by pilots by diane, no longer available. Good luck with the kit. Takes awhile to finish but results well worth it, great flyer. Reinforce the bulkhead holding the tail wheel. It is not strong enough for the stresses. Roy

I recently aquired a Saito 450 R3 radial engine in a trade deal. I am now the proud owner of four radial engines. An UMS Evolution 777, a ASP 400, a Saito 200 R3 and now a Saito 450 R3. I plan to install the 450 in an 85" Gilmore Red Lion racer.

I ordered a BH Gilmore 85" racer for my Saito 450 radial engine. I also ordered a Kelco exhaust ring and Microsens on board glow systen for this engine. I considered installing a CD ignition system by CH Ignitions but the system is not quite available as yet and the Micorsens system is not only available but also proven.

any one ever ran 35-40% in these. I run most of my Saitos on 30-45% all the time.

The BH Gilmore build is going quickly. The wing is complete already. I ordered a Keleco exhaust ring and a Microsens on board glow system for the Saito 450. I can't hardly wait to fire up the 450 for the first time.

I completed the empanage today. The elevator and rudder are functional and adjusted to the manual specs. Not much more I can do now until the on board glow system and exhaust ring arrive. Then I can proceed with installing the engine and fuel system.

I received my Keleo exhaust for my Saito 450 radial engine yesterday and made some good progress on the Gilmore build today. The exhaust was mounted to the engine and the engine installed into the plane.

Saito use a very high silicone content in their conrods,excellent bearing material.Most people use 20% nitro plus a little petrol which keeps the dead cylinder which keeps the alive at idle.I use it on my 200r3 with good results.

Hey OldFart,

I am using Omega 10% with 17% oil fuel on my Saito 200 R3. This fuel works great but I do run a McDanial on board glow system on the 200. I will be running the same fuel on the 450 Saito and I will also be running a Microsens on board glow system on that engine.
