YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

Does anyone have any numbers for the YS 1.40 Sport.:D

I am turning ~9000 with an APC 17X8 using YS 20/20.

I glad somebody posted.:D Have you ever tried the APC 18-6W on 20/20. I have been debating if I want to run 20/20 or 30% Helicopter fuel. The Yak 54 that the 1.40S is in weighs about 10 lb's even.:D
Also, have you tached a APC 16-10 or any other props, and how much time do you have on it.:D

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

I have tried the 18-6 pro zinger and wasn't impressed, the APC would only be worse due to the weight increase. The motor really sings on the 17X8. BTW, I am using it on the QQ YAK 54 coming in at a hair over 11lb. Pull out is there but not great, you sould be fine at 10 lb. I do try to limit the use of full throttle because 9000rpm is at the top of the RPM band recomended by the manf.

Why are swapping out the YS? Mine is in a Aeroworks Yak. What % of throttle does it take to hover your 11 lb Yak?

3D_Junkie 01-30-2008 03:03 PM

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

I would say 65% to hover.

I am swapping the YS for a brillelli 26 (gas) because of the price of glow and the rate at which the YS uses it (1 gallon a week for me).

My YS is only a couple of months old. It is by far the best running glow engine I have ever owned. If it didn't drink so much fuel I would keep it around.

N7160F,
I understand your decision. I do not mind the glow fuel one bit. I like the perfromance that only GLOW can give in these size planes. There is such a weight penalty to go gas in a 10 lb plane.

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

I am going with a Brillelli 26. I am expecting to get 9000 rpm with a 18X8. with only a 6oz. weight penality. Worth it.

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

N7160F,
For me there would be alot bigger weight penalty than that. I am only running the old style YS stainless header pipe. It only weighs 1 OZ. My engine weighs 35 oz bolted to it's lightened aluminum mount. There would be allmost 10 OZ plus the ignition battery and switch harness.
Why did you not like the APC 18-8W, was the spool up very slow (heavy). What rpm did it turn it? I reweighed my plane last night, and it is 9lb 11 oz.:D

With the PZ 18x6, the breaking action of the prop was too high and the pull of the prop was less than with the APC 17X8. When I tried the APC 18X8W the motor was loading up too much (ie max rpms too low).

If you are running %30 nitro the 18X8 would probably be the way to go. I would look for a Xoar or other wood prop though, the APC's get really heavy over 17".

N7160F,
PZ prop? I am talking about the APC 18-6W not a 18-8. If I run 20% instead, what props do think compare to the APC 17-8 for a little more load and a couple hundred less rpm. I hope to run it in the 8500-8600 range. What was the best set up you found, and what muffler did you use?

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

Motorman,

PZ = Pro Zinger.

I don't have any expirence with the APC 18X6W. I think it will work well for you since your plane is significantly lighter. The breaking effect is not that bad once you get used to it, it actually helps when doing 3D.

As far a mufflers go. I started with the stock muffler. When that fell apart in the air, I was using a straight pipe out the side of the cowl. I am now running a performance specalities cigar type muffler. Of the three I didn't notice any performance differences.

N7160F,
I really like the looks of the Zoar props, but I have never heard how they compare. All I can do is sit here and dream about flying, since it is still -8 @ noon here is WI. Another couple days, and the finsihing touches will be done on the YAK, and then I get to start the Funtana X100 with another YS. Then I have two other YS's that still need a home.:D

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

the Zoar props are also extremely light. Almost half the weight of the APCs.

I would like to try one this summer, how do they compare load wise? What rpm's did you get with PZ that you mentioned a few posts ago?

Motorman,
I was getting ~8600 with the PZ 18X6. But the pullout seemed to flatten out in the higher rpm ranges. I don't know if the prop was physically deforming or not. I have heard the Zoar props are significantly better than the PZ props. I am going to try an 18X6 on the 26cc once I see what rpms are with the 18x6 PZ.

I am also going to try the 22X8 on the DL50 that I have. I am just waiting on the 26cc to get here so that I can order the two props together and save a little on shipping.

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

Guys, I'm seriously thinking of getting a YS 140 Sport to power a 15lbs (w/motor) 72 inch KMP Seafury. Is this enough motor, currently powered by an RCV120SP that is barely enough power to tote it around the field at full throttle.

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

It would pull it very good.:D Allmost identical if not a little edge on the Saito 1.80.

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

I think at that weight I'd be looking at a gasser maybe a Brillelli 36 at least it won't guzzle 30% nitro by the gallon :D
plus you could run a nice 3 bladed prop too

RE: YS 1.40 sport rpms with 16" and 17" props.

Your going to get better throttle response from the Xoar but dont be suprised to see your peak drop even compared to the W. About a 2ounce diference form the 18x6w and the Xoar 18x6 swords.
and Btw Im getting a solid 8700 peak on the Saito 1.80 with the Xoars on 15% will try 30% as soon as the weather makes it mind up.
