2017 U.S. Team Trials and Indoor RC Pattern Contest
Contest was a success with 15 competitors. Competition ranged from Sportsman through F3P with the U.S. team for 2017 being selected as part of this contest. I would like to thank Bob Kane for scoring, Shawn Story as timer and assistant line chief and my wife for helping with score running. Judges that made this event possible include Derek Koopowitz, Mark Atwood, David Cook, Bill Pritchett and Harry Ells. We welcomed the strong participation contingent from Canada to bring an international flair to the event.

Some flight line pictures of the action. Two pilots flew balsa wood airplanes constructed of 1/32 inch square balsa. Joseph's was his own design called "Conquest". The balsa spars and stringers were reinforced with .004 boron, a material which he adapted from F1D indoor free flight world class building techniques. The Conquest airplane weighed 49.5 grams ready to fly with a 1S Lanstov system. This system was impressive! For comparison, I used the same battery (a 1S 150maH Eflight brand) on my balsa designed (25 gram built up balsa test bed using UMX Extra components) and the Lanstov has 3x the thrust and 2x the energy efficiency. Pretty incredible that a unit like that can swing two13 inch props!

Greyson Pritchett flew Advanced to 3rd place. He is an up and coming pattern pilot who loves indoor pattern as well. We will be seeing more of Greyson in the future as he is already talking about F3P level for the next time.

And a special mention of CJ Kurella. A lot of folks were asking me "who is CJ?" Well, for the last several years he and Joseph have been ripping up the indoor scene with the Cube, T-28 races 3D areas and this young man can fly! He was the only entry in Intermediate but his flying was incredible.
