    3.0m Comp ARF rudder counterbalance

    Hi Don,

Did you ever experiment with reducing the size of the counterbalance on the Fiberclassics/Comp Arf 3meter Extra 330? I seem to recall that you had done that in the past. If you have tried this, what were your thoughts? I am contemplating trying this.

RE: 3.0m Comp ARF rudder counterbalance

    Hello!

I chopped it in half, about 3 inches. Plane felt more stable in one-roll rolling circles. Did not feel like I lost much in 3D flying.

    Thanks for the reply Don,

When you did the mod, how did you finish the LE of the Rudder?

The LE of the rudder, at the top, is for the most part open. However, I left the rear 1/4 inch and bent in so it followed the contour of the rest of the rudder LE (rounded at the back). It's not noticeable at all on the ground unless I'm in deflection, and gives it the clearance when it deflects. I think there was a picture on a websites associated with Andy Kane's JR Challenge from 2003, but I'm not sure if its there still. Its an easier mod to do than it initially seemed.

    Thanks Don,

Found the pics. I think I'll give it a try. Since the rudder I am modifying has some damage anyway, I don't have much to lose.

The best shots are here: http://hudsonfield.tripod.com/

In particular the day three link has some good shots: http://joehanchey.netfirms.com/day_three.htm

    www.scaleaerobatics.com has a couple pics.
