Default My 80" Cap "Found" By Deer Hunter "PICTURES"

I just got an email that a deer hunter found my airplane in a swamp next to his deer stand. Aparantly his brother has a friend of a friend of a friend that belongs to a club close to where I lost it. The frigging thing drifted 15 miles orbiting and climbing before it ran out of gas. It then glided into the swamp where an oak tree took the wing off and settled in the brush. I guess its moldy from being rained on but according to the guy the engine is fine the internal electroncs are salvagablw, we will see. If I just get back my hundred dollar spinner I will be happy. I never thought I was going to see this thing again, so wow. I will post pics when I get them, I am in a different state for school so my buddy is going to get it this week. Hey mike if the electronics did get wet can horizon test this stuff out in a way see if its still usable and reliable?

Congrats on finding it....my son wasn't as lucky as he found his splattered 25 yards in front of him! And his spinner is 'history'

This is a question for the Horizon rep at the Manufactuers forum. Mike is here as a pilot not a JR rep.

I like endings like that! Did you have your name, phone #, etc. in the airplane somewhere?

Actually I did not which makes me even more lucky. I know how horrible it is that i didnt, I meant to do it and forgot so please dont post about the rules and how bad I am. Not aimed at you bass just the people who love to jump on things like this. A little old man on a rascal at the field that day already chewed my behind off for the offense. I actually found another 80 inch cap new in the box at s LHS no less and may put my motor from the wreck in it. I really liked how this airplane flew and will use it as my back up and all around fun plane. Of course I will use a slightly different regulator /rx mounting set up.

I have 4 airplanes I'm looking at right now that don't have my phone# or address or name in. I am going to correct the oversight immediately I also have a Hanger 9 80" Cap and your story hit home! I always used to put my name and phone# in my airplanes but I guess since I never lost one I just got lazy. Anyway, Post some pics of the pilotless remains when you get them.

I will as soon as I get them. Someone one showed me a great idea of just sticking one of your address labels inside.

Horizon will check out your electronics but they might charge you a small fee for it. I sent them a reciever a few months back to have it checked after a glitch I was getting it turned out you are not supposed to run digital servos on the R700 reciever. Anyway they charged me 15 bucks I think it was worth it to me and I learned a little somthing as well

Yes the 770 is fine with digitals. I did not know you couldn't run digitald on the R700 until then it was a surprise to me but I have not had a problem with that receiever since I got it back. You would think that Horizon would say somthing about that on their website but they do not.

Frankly, I don't think you deserve to get any of it back. It appears you did not put in a very thorough search. I mean, c'mon, it was only 15 miles away!

Anyway, glad it appears you will get at least some of it back!

Not being able to use digital servos with an R700 receiver is a new one to me. Where did that come from? We use digitals with the R700 all the time.

Mike that is what I was told by the service guys when I sent my reciever in. They "could not find any problems with the receievr that the customer was probobly using digital servos and should not do so with this receiever" The problem was the rudder would hard hover and come back to center by itself like the plane was getting a radio hit. I tried it in two planes both had digitals on the rudder and rudder only. I put an analog servo on that channel and haven't had a problem since. If I am giving out false info I am sorry that is just what I was told by Horizon.

Yeah I wussed out on looking for it, did I say 15 miles I meant 15 yards. There was bushes and everything blocking my view. If I would of had my garmin I may have tried It sounds like the motor and spinner are totally fine, My bud is picking it up tomorrow for me as I now am in little rock for 6 months. I will pos pics tomorrow night.

Ok the airplane has been picked up and my buddy sent me pics of the carnage. Funny enough he put a new battery on it and everything powered up and worke normaly except 1 aileron servo. This servo took an oak tree right the wing in what we think was a last high speed dive. It had to have dove in theway the thing was gutted. You can see in the one picture with the horrible art work that the servo tray broke loose and pulled out the regulator wires. With fully charged redundant Li ions and enough wire keepers to choke a horse I think this had to cause my loss of essential DC power. A big mistake was attaching regulators to eachother. If they had been seperate I might have only lost the one. I have learned alot of things from this airplane. Nothing left to do now except cut rudder off and hang it on the wall with the rest.

And last is Jerry Glem From Stacey, MN. He told me he figures it was 20 miles from the flying field to his deer stand.

All,
The wreck is sitting in my basement right now. Amazingly, I think nearly everything is going to be salvagable less the airframe itself.

What you can't see in the pictures, though, is the smell. It's Horrible! I guess that comes from sitting out in the woods, in fall, in minnesota for over a month.

I am going to gut the remains and toss the airframe tomorrow. I can't take the moldy smell, it's probably not good to breath that stuff in, either.

So its in your house, doesnt that make it sort of your plane, plus you wouldnt want the bearings to rust now would you. You better go fly that thing imediately.
