Default Radio Shack Infrared Thermometer Works Great! **repost**

I've been running in my new Webra 35 / Weston pipe combo in my Raptor. It ran OK at first but after a minute or so of hovering it would start to lose power. I assumed it was overheating. I spent a bunch of time tweaking needles but it still ran inconsistently.

After reading about it here I decided to pick up one of Radio Shack's non-contact thermometers. ( http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...%5Fid=22%2D325 )Similar in function to the Raytek but half the size (its a little bigger than an auto alarm remote) and half the price. (I paid $47)

Did a bit of research as to what the optimal cylinder temp range should be. The range seems to be 220-230 degrees.

Went home, fired up the Rap. Hovered for a bit, then set her down and took her temperature. 192 degrees - a bit low. Weird! After some more tweaking and testing I got the temperature up to around 220 degrees and it ran wonderfully! No sagging, no bogging, no engine cuts and a good smoke plume.

I was *way* rich beforehand - I thought the engine was overheating at first and kept opening the main needle. The engine was actuallyboggine down because the load being placed on it was more than it could handle at such a rich setting.

I ran four more tanks through it that evening with the same results. I would have never thought to lean the engine if I hadn't seen the temperature evidence. Money well spent!

When I turned the bird on her nose the engine leaned slightly and started rotating the blades at maybe 20RPM.
Like a dummy I tried to set the bird down without stopping the blades first and

**FAP**

Caught a blade right across the forehead, just above my right eye.

The lump is mostly gone now.

I now take my measurements from the side of the cylinder that the main needle is on. Much safer and quicker too.

I was going to buy one today, but I read another post on this unit as far as calibrating it, does it have a calibration feature, or is it not needed? Thanks, Daz...

[No calibrating feature on it.

However. As we're measuring a nonreflective metal surface the unit's accuracy range (listed in the manual as ±4 degrees) is good enough to figure out what your engine is doing.

Just an FYI:

It seems that Radio Shack has this Thermometer on special for $30.
Don't know how long the special is going to run for (web site doesn't say).
Looks like you buy it at either the store or through the web site.
