Default Battery question for my raptor 30

What is the biggest battery(volts/mAh) I can get to run my electronics on my heli?I want my servos to move faster .

Don't get carried away, the tail servos only take 5.4 volts or so.

I'm running a 2 cell A123 pack. 2300 mAh, with a regulator between the gyro and and the tail servo. It's a fast as your servos can run without damage, and they hold a charge for months without topping them off. Radical RC has them for $36.00. Be sure to buy the balancer for A123.

Thats why they make step downs right?

Yeah that would be nice but I sold all my lipo stuff with my Trex awhile back, thinking of just upgrading the battery with a stepdown but I dont know what battery to get [] .

Step downs are good for about .7 volts

So if you are taking a 5 cell pack, which charges to 7.1 volts or so, and putting a step down on it you're still over doing the voltage to the tail servo.

Run a good 4 cell pack, or a lipo and a regulator. Or get a 5 cell pack and a 6v rated tail servo, hitec makes one that works but I forget the model number off the top of my head.

I don't know what a stepdown is. I ran a 2000 mAh NiMh 5 cell with the same regulator. The regulator costs about $5. If you fast charge I recommend that you get a pack made of A cells. Stay away from AA cells if you fast charge.

You can get A cells up to around 2700 mAh.

Humm,im so lost lol.All I want to do is put a battery(6.0V) in that will make my servos move a little faster and was told to use a step down but have no ideal what a step down is.I have a JR NES-810G servo for the tail,I dont remember what I did with the box but I think its good for 6.0V.I might just leave it be so I dont screw somthing up LOL.

I charge my RX batter with the TX charger so I dont think its a fast charge but could be wrong....I just want to find a battery that I can charge with the charger I have now but this is becomming a pain in the butt so I might just leave it alone [&o] .Thats the last thing I need is for somthing to go wrong while im flying [X(].

Default RE: Battery question for my raptor 30

Hi FH 400,
A step down is simply a unit that reduces the voltage going into it down to a lower level. This is sometimes done by using a diode, but a diode will only drop the voltage by 0.7 volts, as BH said above.
You really don't want to hit your poor tail servo with much over its rated voltage range, so you need to check the spec for your servo.
Remember, a 6 volt battery will actually hold a higher voltage when fully charged, so as an example, if you have a tail servo that can handle up to 5 volts, and you have a 6 volt pack fully charged sitting at, lets say around 6.5 volts, then even with a 0.7 volt step down reducing the voltage down to 5.8 volts, your poor tail servo is going to burn up.
A standard charger that comes with you radio ( If you have a JR, Futaba set) is not a fast charger. If you have a set that came with an indoor electric heli then it may possibly be a fast charger. A fast charger will charge your batteries in just over an hour, a trickle charger, like the one you get with a JR/Futaba set, will take an over night charge.

Hope this helps.

If you get a bigger battery for your heli, higher voltage, use a regulator for the rudder servo. If you get a battery that is larger, more mAh than that which came with your radio, get a suitable charger to be sure that your pack is always fully charged.

Changing battery packs can be very dangerous if you don't have the right support equipment.

you can get an align 2 n 1 like the one in the link posted it comes with a 1900 milliamp li-po 2 cell and it has a glow driver and a volt watch built in for $73 but you need a li-po charger (more money) so if you didnt know of these there you are heli proz sells them they also sell 5.1 two way step downs that step down to 5.1V if you look around on there site you will find them for like $3.99 to $10.00 I belive that the 810 jr servo will take the voltage look it up for your own sake.

Thanks for posting the link and info .What is the glow driver for?I was going to pass on the bigger battery cause BarracudaHockey allways gives good info and I dont want to kill my heli but the 2 n 1 sounds really nice [8D] and a safer way to go.

The 2 in 1 is a regulator, a regulated output of 5.8v minus the .7 for a step down, and your tail servo is happy.

An unregulated 5 cell pack is 7v, minus .7 is still a fried tail rotor servo.

The "Align Two-Way Step Down Voltage Regulator" claims to output 5.1V. Is it a step down or a regulator? LOL

The inline stuff are step downs. They say "5.1 v" because thier (align) regulated systems run at 5.8v

A friend of mine has a few of these never had a prob with the switch, but a capaciter broke off, he came back from some light loops and put it in a 5 ft hover and seen somthing dancing in the canopy. It will still work, but he went down to Radio Shack an bought a capaciter for dirt cheap, quick solder job and good as new. A cap just holds a charge so that if the servos require a burst of power it wont have the voltage drop or a sag in volts from the battery. (Correct me if im out to lunch any one) I believe there is Three caps side by each on the regulator. And the Glow Driver option is kinda nice It has a button you push witch draws power from the li-po and lights the glow plug for 15 seconds or so, no more dead glow drivers or wires! And as said before It has a built in Volt watch to each his own I think they are a good deal at $73 bucks

Thank you sooo much for the info cause you talked me into getting one.As soon as I save some extra cash i'll get a align 2-4S ballance charger (again cause I sold mine ) then i'll get the 2 n 1 .

Just look on ebay for:

Rx 4.8V

or

Rx 6V

and you will get batteries of either 4.8v or 6v up to 2700mah, enough to fly all day.....
