RE: Painting with auto paint questions
The project that got me started with painting with auto paint is nearly finished.
Covered with Coverite 21st Century Fabric.
Question, can I spray auto clear coat over the fabric? If I can, would I need to prime it with a clear primer?

Hi mate nice plane pix.Don't know what the texture is like rough or smooth with the coverite,i hav'nt used it.A rule of thumb guide to adhesion with the type of automotive paints we are discussing and the clearcoat you talk about is that it should be layed over a minimum #800 keyed surface for good adhesion, check the tech data sheet or their website if you don't have one.

What type of finish did you spray on the cloth so far? that in my opinion would be a deciding factor prior to spraying something as chemically hot as clear coat. I am sure if its all cloth, it will be fine, but you wouldn't want the clear to blister up the underlying finish if there is any.

Coverite 21st Century Fabric is a pre-finished fabric that Coverite no longer produces a matching paint for. After reading this mornings posts I called Coverite. The rep tells me that any of the usual automotive 2 part paints or clearcoats can be sprayed over21st Century Fabric with no surface prep needed. The surface has a smooth, somewhat tacky feel to it. I'm going to try a couple oftest pieces today and see how it works. Scuffing it up will be difficult because of the tacky feel but I'm going to try to scuff a piece up and clear coat over it as well.
I'll report back on how it works.
BTW sensei, I highly value your advice. Please don't stopoffering it, even if certain other people don't want to hear it or don't have the technical knowledge to understand it.
As they say, "The proof is in the pudding".

Well, I've tested the clear on a couple of peices of Coverite, both scuffed up and untouched. Both came out the same. Nice, glossy and smooth. The clear is mostly cured I believe, it's hard but still flexable. Tonite I sprayed the top wing with clear and it's now sitting in the shop. The Coverite first sagged a little but after a little while it has tightened back up. I'm going to wait a few days before I do the bottom wing and fuselage. If the top wing goes wrong then I won't have to re-cover the whole plane.
I'll post some pictures after it's had a few days to cure.
