Question regarding Foam Wing Repair:

I have a Duraplane trainer which has a foam wing and had an unfortunate engagement with a metal post, which resulted in a deep gouge in the leading edge, approximately 1.5 inches long.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to an appropriate filler? Am currently looking at Hobbico hobbylite filler or K&B Micro-Balloons filler.

I have another wing kit but would like to repair the original as a backup? I appreciate any thoughts that may be provided.

If looks do not matter to you use a business card and clear packing tape from Staples. Wrap the card over the LE and tape it down. I have seen and used this for a quick fix . . .It always lasts as long as there is no other structural problems. make sure you check the wing very closly, as a small crack may not be noticable. Cut out a rectangular section of the leading edge, enough to remove the crushed pert. Glue in a pice of blue or pink foam and sand the profile to match the rest of the wing.

You could use expanding insulation foam. available at almost any hardware store. I use it for lots of stuff including: holding battery packs, fuel tanks, filling holes - whatever it's great stuff!!

A related question.

I have seen references to "Blue or Pink" foam. What exactly am I looking for when I go to the hardware store? Insulation?

Blue pink or even grey foams are different types of insulation foam. They all cut with a wire but are usualy heavier than white foam.

Be carefull of the expanding foam in the can. Even the low expansion type can do a lot of damage as it expands. It does need to be controlled. I squirted some into a molded wing once and the wing puffed up like a balloon.

If you can't find the blue or pink foam, just cut a square chunk of soft balsa and glue it in the ding. Then sand it down to match the wing!

Like was said a of foam and elmers polyurethane glue like wallfoam when cured. will expand 20 to 30 % CU

Fill it with lightweight spackling from red devil, available at most hardware stores, you`ll know its the right stuff when you pick up the tub. It does`nt weigh hardly anything. Let it dry sand it back to what it should look like. JW
