Under the stairs? Harry Potter builds model planes too.

I have seen some pretty nice work shops and somewhere in this thread is mine, at least I think I posted some. I think sometimes we forget just how good we have it here when it comes to our hobby and don't think about what it's like in other countries where space and hobby shops are limited. My good friend dimitry and godbrother has to have a great wife as she found him probably the last T/F P-39 aircobra in Moscow and he sent me this picture of where he's building it, yup under the stairs. Yes we are lucky and I sure do hope dimi don't mind me posting this.

Personally, I like the 4' twin bulb (2 x 300W) hallogen lights. I have 4 of them (2400 Watts) in my small basement shop. For working, they provide a more natural light, IMO. However, they do have a number of negatives: They get VERY hot, they use a lot more energy than fluorescents, the bulbs do not last as long, and they are more expensive. They must also be kept clean as the heat can start a fire under the right conditions (e.g. covered in balsa dust...).

Been meaning to do this for a long time. Heres my shop...

The one under construction is over at a friends house that we are building. Hoping to have it done this summer.

My shop....
I finished my basement a few years ago & purpose-built one room for models. The floor is laminate (like Pergo), walls are 1x12 ship lap with cut nails, ceiling is pattern 116 pine (tongue & groove) the cabinets I made myself from pine. Lots of light, lots of storage (pegboard inside the doors & a pegboard lazy susan in one cabinet. I made some drawers that are 48" long inside to store balsa. The hole above the door is an air filter, the cover I made for it fell down & shattered to bits..... I'd rather build planes than another grille! Fridge, TV, and my drums around the corner. I can hibernate down there all winter! These are pics I had on my PC of some projects, but you can get the jist!

Why won't my wife let me take over the formal dining room for my "indoor shop"? the white carpet would'nt get dirty and the antique burrow wood table would make a great layout table!

Was going to use those 8 ft flurescent llights but they will hum over time. The room is the size of a 1 car garage.
Any ideas??

There is one fixture at the front and rear walls, mounted cross-ways to the long dimension of the shop. Each long side wall has two fixtures in a row. These fixtures are in the $30 range nowadays. I also have a half-dozen clamp-on incandescent lamps with reflectors, and three swing-arm lamps.
No such thing as too much light in a work shop.

plumber,
I take it these florescent fixtures are'nt the cheap $10 shop type. Thats what I have in my garage. Is there a type name associated with these? Would like to switch over slowly to some non-hummers.

clean for the moment, cabinets and epoxy floor. Oh yeah it still holds two cars when needed
Also had it insulated and HVAC hooked up. I keep the bigger planes at my field in the shop. Someday I will have a house out there so I can just walk out and fly. Packing stuff up and taking it to a club is a big PITA. Took these pictures just before I finished it and painted.

CrazyRyan,
I've just spent about 2 hours reading and looking at this entire Thread! Incredible! Some of these "shops" are WAY too clean to Actually be USED for Model construction. I've purchased a 14' x 14' metal building which originally was going be used for my metal shop ie: Lathe, Mill etc... Then an Accident and layed me up since Dec. as a result the hours, days and weeks of NOTHING TO do brought back with a vengance my 'RC' Addition. So we cantilevered off the wall a 14' work bench, Added peg board and have been building like a "Banshee" (Credit to Jim Kimbro).
The old "Curare" is sitting on the Clausing Lathe, Clipped Wing T-Craft leaning on the lathe on the floor. The open area in front of the lathe is where I'm going to put my building Table which after reading this post, I'm going to build up a "Torsion Box" table. When you've been away from a hobby for 15 yrs, the Size of Everything has increased both in physical size and monitarily speaking. We've mainly built from Plans, just as the .40 size Cub I've included here, Set of TF plans that must be 20 yrs OLD. Anyway, so glad you started the threat some 2 or 3 yrs ago and my small shop is "Piddley" compared to some of the real "PRO" shops, but man O man what a way to get some super ideas. I would like to Thank all the fine modelers and a Couple of "Hams" that posted here. On the end of my bench is an old NC-300 receiver, which I listen to as I'm working.
Looking forward to sending pictures of the "Building Table once completed.

Worst thing I ever did in that other hobby was sell my B&W 5100S and Collins R-390A.

Fred,
Yeah, I still play with AM almost daily. Homebrew 304tl rig, RCA-CR88a RX. Back up rig GK-500c 1958 model. I'm a big lover of the old National Rx's. Built my first proportional R/C Rig back in the late 60's an old Silver Box Mule, if you remember those. I was in HIGH COTTON with that rig and Had the old dual rack Servos.. everybit of abt 9 in/oz of Torgue but they were linear! Loved those...
Perhaps we will meet on the air one day, I do fly on 6m still.
Take care,
