Default Dulling down glossy Monokote?

I am building a warbird ARF and it has shiny monokote. Can I just steel wool it and make it look 'weathered' and dulled out without ruining the covering?

kmot,
Well, yes, you can do that, but make sure that the steel wool is 000 or something very fine. Another thing you can do is get some flat covering to do the same thing. If what you want is "spot" wear, the steel wool may be the better way.

Thanks Red. I know I can shoot it with flat clear, but that adds weight. I have a bag of 0000 steel wool but wanted to hear from those that had tried it before I screwed up my finish if it's a mistake to use steel wool.

Kmot, I want to do the same thing with a GP PT-19. If you've tried the steel wool, I'd love to hear your results! I also want to dull the painted parts, as well as the Monokote. TOO SHINY!

A scotchbrite pad works. This was chrome monokote.

Les, GREAT looking P-40. Does the scotchbrite work on painted surfaces equally well. My cowl is glossy, also. Thanks.

Side note.. I want to build a P-40B for a small gas engine next, but kits/plans are not plentiful. What kit/plan is your P-40?

Nuts: I haven't yet done anything to my Monokote covering as I am still in the construction stages.

Les: Your Kittyhawk looks great. Got any closeups?

I tried a couple of things to dull mine.

First I tried 600 grit sandpaper, it works pretty good but works VERY fast. I then painted it with Lusterkote Flat Clear. Worked pretty well.

I then tried fine steel wool. It scuffed ok. I then painted it with flat clear again and it looked the same as the sandpaper scuffing.

Then I tried painting just the Monokote and it looks the same as the other two.

I also had some monokote that had been painted with flat clear that I peeled off of a balsa surface I was testing and you can bend it and crease it and the Lusterkote didn't crack or peel.

Kmot,
I used 0000 Steel wool. It worked very nice for me. Took the shine off the Tan Monokote and sprayed on my camo with lustercoat.
I was very happy with the results.
Good Luck on your project......

You will have to experiment with the Scotchbrite pad. These things come in different "grits", and I used rather coarse to accentuate the "panel" effect.

This started life as a Top Flite Gold edition. I took a few liberties to come closer to what I wanted.

I did this pre-digital camera, so not much in the way of close ups, but for what they are:

I only had 8 channels, and needed 9, so I ran the sliding cockpit through a Go Slo, and coupled it with the landing gear. Up gear=closed; down gear=open.
