Looking for cabinet on legs style flight box plans
I am looking for plans to build a flight box. What I would like to build is the cabinet style that has a fold down panel, legs so it is up in the air and a cradle on the top for holding the plane! Anyone out there got plans or sells s kit for such an item?
Cheers

RE: Looking for cabinet on legs style flight box plans
Hi Mike, I looked and looked and couldn't find anything so I decided to build and design my own. I have some work left on it yet, but I'm going to make plans of it if you are interested. The design is as you describe with folding legs and swing down front. It has a removable caddy for fuel and battery/starter, drawers and additional storage. The idea was to have something that would hold everything I needed to go fly in one box instead of several. I have to load and unload my truck every time I go flying and it's a pain.

YES, YES...that's it Lee. Do you have plans for your cabinet, or do you sell a "kit"?
Xrod...do you have any pictures? As you mentioned, I hate the repeated trips back and forth and then you can work on your airplane up off the ground and all the stuff you need is right there whithout bending over or losing things in the grass. I am no carpenter but I have a friend who has the tools and the ability. If I could get plans then I think I would tackle building one as I would imagine to buy one would be pretty pricey.

SkyCam 41
I have most of the drawings in hand sketch form. I could probably have the complete set in a couple of weeks.

Lee, could I see your drawings too? Do the legs on your box fold up for transport and are they built into the box or separate? I was thinking of having the supports in an x frame that was seperate...like a fold up camping stool. Built in would be better.
SkyCam, my box is still in the rough, but I will take some photo's. When it is done and field tested, I will make drawings and share them with whoever might be interested. My box is very similar to Lee's except it has three vertical sections instead of two, four drawers that are not as wide. Center section has removable fuel/starter/battery caddy. Dimensions are 24" x 15" x 12 1/2". It is made of 3/16" cheap ply and braced with 3/8" hardwood on all edges. I chose this to give me strength, light weight, and allow me to get true edges with only a jig saw and a hand plane or sandpaper. One could use 3/8" stock instead without the bracing at a higher cost. Wish my woodshop was not packed away!

Xrod
The legs on my box are fold up and stay on the box.
This method generates some problems though. First it is difficult to keep the legs folded up when the box is being carried and second
when the legs are folded up it makes the base that the box is sitting on smaller and when the box is being transported to and from the flying field it easier to turn over.
The new version of the box that I just completed has the legs separtate. My flying field has tables and legs are not needed.
I will upload some photos of the new box in a couple of days.

Xrod I will send you the drawings when they are completed.

OK, here's mine. Seems to work great. It's a little bulky, but doesn't take up any more floor space than a large flight box. The legs fold up and will attach to the back side of the box. I still need to design and build the plane holder that will fit on the top. The removable fuel/battery/starter caddy is great! Let me know what you think. I'll be away at a school for the next two weeks, but will work on plans when I get back if anyone is interested.

The last two photos. My box does not have legs bacause I do not need them at my field.
The box with the chain on the door is unfinished. The door will have 2 chains when finished.

Built this one last year, its bigger than it looks, if I remember right it was 16"x22" or so. (its snowing outside, dont feel like lifting the top of my airplane trailer to measure it . The legs are a separate unit, its to big to try to drop folded legs.

Lee Belew.....I just joined up because I saw your old field box pictured above. I was at a flee market up here in vermont this summer and found a box just like that except the boards you raise up were more fork like for cradling the fuselage. There was about 4 AMA decals on it dating from 1970-1974...and the members name/ama number. It seems the member has passed away.
I bought the box for my father in law who is the prez of Green Mountain RCers. Now I am getting into it and wish I had saved it..lol
Xrod....nice work on yours....I would love some plans to that!
