Default Help, resurrecting old plane

Hey I have an older plane Im going to refurbish to fly again. The problem is the tail had fuel get under the monocoat and get into the balsa. The balsa isnt soft and is intact structuraly but has a bit of a "goo" on it. sanding does no good. I dont really want to rebuild the tail section and I wasnt gonna cover it with monocoat just shoot it with rustoleum. My question is what will break down the nitro\caster goo and not hurt the balsa or the ca. By the way its a sheeted tail. Thanks

Don't know if they still make the stuff but a product called K2R Spot lifter used to work quite well. You sprayed it on the stain, let dry to a white powder and brush/vacuum it off.(later that day) A little surfing found this link www.K2rspotlifter.com

Once you get the area cleaned with the KR2, and it is really dry (hit it with
the heat gun to dry it out, and bring moisture to the surface) brush this
stuff on. It puts a coating on the balsa that will allow the iron-on coverings
to stick to it as though nothing had ever hppened.

Look for this product at the hobby store, or on-line at Tower.

You can also try a hot iron and a paper towel. The heat draws the oil out to be absorbed by the towel.

The K2 works well. I've used it myself.

Once after all else failed I used 1/32” sheeting over the oil soaked wood. Made little dimples in the wood and used epoxy.

Try soaking with rubbing alcohol and covering with corn starch. The corn starch will absorb the oil after the alcohol dries out.
