How to make a 3D American Flag on your planes
Termagator,
Very nice job. Really cool.
I've got to give this one a try. Never heard of the Windex thing before, but if it works as good as you make it sound, I can't miss.
A couple of questions though:
1) Is that Windex stuff something special, or is it just your basic windscreen or window cleaner? The stuff I use to clean my planes is something like that and contains alcohol. Will that work ok?
2) How do you get the patterns to lay flat on a open rib structure, with the covering sagging between the ribs?
I've never spent much time on iron-on-covering airplane decoration, because of poor results... You might have changed my life...

How to make a 3D American Flag on your planes
Rudeboy...I guarentee it will change your life.....Any soapy substance should work......I used to use soapy water, a mixture of tap water and dish washing detergent...I would have a large container of water, and poor liquid dish washing detergent in and stir it real slow, so as not to make any bubbles. I switched over to windex because of one, its in a nice spraybottle and 2 , I didnt have to have the large container anymore.
The 2nd part of your question, if were talking you have a base coat of covering down over the ribs, its no problem to add trim peices, the soapy water will allow you to place them on the base covering, move them around to where you want it, and then just squeegy out the soapy water,
Remember this windex method does not work on regular ultracote,,,I'm told it will work with Ultracote Plus,,but I have never tried it...Windex does work with most other covering ie 21st century, Econocote, towercote.....Good luck with your project....Gator

Bummer
I just tried a test piece on my wing... it was a no go...
I'm using Oracover... I don't know if you guys over in the states know this stuff?
For me it is the best covering material I have ever used... but apperantly not for this application!
I think I have some old leftovers from Solarfilm somewhere in the basement... I might give that a try tommorow to see if it works.
And I even used my brand new VISA card... I was thinking: "Only new equipment for this plane!"
What card are you using?

I wiped the area where I tried the test piece clean with alcohol, even though the plane has not yet flown... just to get all those nasty finger prints off.
I don't know about the monokote... will have look into that and call around a little.
I'm determined to make this work... it looks just too beautiful to pass...
My guess is that I need a covering material of which the glue film dissolves a little when it comes in contact with the detergent in the window cleaner.

maybe it is a combo of the backing and the soap...try this,,,stick a peice of covering on the wing with windex, use the credit card. let it sit overnight,,,,,let me know if this works. Ultracote, will lay down like its gonna stick, but then curls up after the windex evaporates.....is this what happened to you?...Gator

Even worse...
It curled up while still wet...
I cleaned the wing, sprayed it with my window cleaner, put on a piece of covering, thouroughly went over it with the creditcard... and saw it curl back up after about 5 seconds...
Does Monokote have a combined glue-adhesive backing? I mean, is the colour of the covering also the glue? Oracover is a coloured film with a separate glue layer.
I know Solarfilm has a combined backing, because when you're doing edge, the colour sticks to your covering iron...
Heck, I'll just test the Solarfilm and see how it works, instead of typing messages on the computer...

Hey Gator now you have really started something - I have decided that the red stripes on my Super Chipmunk wing have to have some depth. I am going to give them a dark shadow and torn ends.
Thanks for the inspiration

How to make a 3D American Flag on your planes
nashtm,,,glad i could help,
Phillybaby......I doubt I get a chance to do it today but i think you could still make that cornish flag at least look like its moveing....I think you could put the gray on last, on top of everything, it would kinda look like light reflecting off black (if thats possible)...you could just make you white hoizontail line wavey, same with the vertical...if I was home now i could do one real fast, but I'm at work and whenI get off I'm going to houston Tx. Be back tue, may try and help you out then
rudeboy, monokote has a clear backing that is pulled off, it not tacky, you are able to move it around on what your covering easily. With some colors its hard to tell which side has the heat sensative backing(one side looks dull) when you lay monokote over monokote sometimes it moves easily, other times it may try to static like cling to the other (base) covering,,,but the windex eliminates the staticy cling, makes it easy to position..Gator

Hey Guys,
Ultracote and Oracover are the same product. Sometines you see oracover printed on the Ultracote backing.
termagator,
Why did you use Ultracote for the white base and not Monokote ?
Personally , I like covering with Ultracote but I think your method of trimming is great. I just may have to buy some Monokote !

Yup,
Kinda figured that.
_I have been reading every post on this for days...I just finally had to thank Termagator publicly.
I'm going to do the flag on my Venture 60 I've been holding off covering for a year or so.
All I needed was a little nudge of an idea to get started....I already have the trans blue, and the white & red.
Now all I need is the gray and some trim solvent to Gitty up!!

747...I used Ultra white cause somebody gave me some...in fact thought it was cream...it was so old the outter covering that had been subject to light had turn brownish, but beyond about 6" it was white again..

Ha...I got one of Gators Sudokhoi's with the Flag on the bottom now, and that should make it even easier for me to understand how it is done. Looks way to cool in the sky btw.
Will definitely apply that scheme to the bottom of my next profile. Something different from our common Checkerboard.
