I insert the hinge, drill a hole, moisten a toothpic and lightly coat it with Elmers Ultimate glue (low-price Gorilla), and insert. The glue expands somewhat to secure the hinge, as well as the pin, so there is no lateral movement...Works great.

I should probably change the title of this thread now to "Anyone using nylon hinges without the mess of epoxy?"
That sheds more light on what you are trying to find out.

I recently wrote an article on how to use gorrilla glue to hold nylon (Dubro type) hinges for my club newsletter. If you are interested I can pm it to you. I would rather not post the article here since it may get picked up by another editorial.

I used a ton of "probond" a few years back when I was making blue fanfold foam zagnuts's. I used about a third of a bottle on one the first one and almost ended up living in a probond igloo. I've always shied away from using it on hinges because I could see it expanding to form a one piece plane. Using it on the pins though seems to be a great idea, especially since the foamed up glue sands a heck of a lot easier than ca.

Thanks for idea!

Vicman,

If your willing to send it I'll certainly read it and soak it up. I certainly promise not to use it without attribution or pass it along without your say so.

Thanks,
Rich

Had to look at my Four Star. And i tapped into the wood. and just screw the 1/4" wing bolts in. For what it's worth i use the Dubro wing bolts. i like that i can use a Allen Wrench instead of a screwdriver.

I touch a small drop of Vaseline on the hinge line, bend it slightly, then a squirt with a heat gun melts the Vaseline thru the hinge line, lay it on a paper towel to cool... Oil is a loser, as it stays moist and will leech out on the hinge...

Just remember that, when you are testing, the hinge isn't getting all the different stresses it gets when in flight. There is a lot of vibration going on up there that is unnoticable to us on the ground. A straight pull just isn't an adaquate test. My 2 cents.
